About Time
Lindsey stands in the hallway, nervously staring at the phone in the wall alcove. She finally gave him her number, now he just had to use it. He took a deep breath and wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans.
"You talked to her the other day. It's not that hard to just call to her" Lindsey said, giving himself a little pep talk. He picked up the handset and turned the finger plate until it came to a stop. He watched it spring back and repeated it over and over until it started to ring.
"Hello?" A soft female voice said and he panicked.
"H-hello, I think I dialed the wrong number." The woman on the phone didn't sound like Stevie. Did she play a trick on him? Did she really not like him at all?
"Who are you looking for, dear?"
"Stephanie, Stevie."
"Oh, well she's in her room. Hold please."
Lindsey waited nervously as his brothers knocked into him on the way to the kitchen. Their mother was cooking dinner and of course they had to get in there first to divvy it up.
"Hello?" Stevie answered and Lindsey smiled.
"Hey, its Lindsey"
"Oh, hi! It's about time you called! I was just doing homework." she said.
Lindsey chuckled. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to bother you."
"You didn't." she says quickly. "I go back soon and silly me left it all to the last minute. I'm almost done though."
"Oh good! So besides the mountain of work, how's it going?"
"Great!" she says with a giggle. "I've um, missed you at the bus stop. I was getting used to seeing you."
"Yeah, the band had kind of left practice up in the air. Some of the guys are in school or working a lot."
"I understand. So what have you been up to?"
"This and that. I'm not as interesting as you are."
"There you go again, being modest." Lindsey blushes, running a hand through his hair. "Do you have a job or are you in school?"
"No, I guess I'm still trying to figure it out. I do odd jobs, help my dad out sometimes but really my passion is music."
"That's so cool, Linds." Stevie says dreamily.
"Lindsey, dinner!" His mother called and he sighed heavily.
"I'd get in there quick, might not be any left" his father said, passing him to wash up.
"Hey, can I call you back in a couple? It's dinner time." Lindsey asked, speaking to Stevie again.
"Yeah, sure. I'll be waiting." She bit her lip. She was already head over heels for him. She would give anything to see him again.
"Hopefully not too long. Talk soon."
"Bye"
"Bye" He hung up and went right to his dad, now sitting at the head of the table. "Dad, can I have a word?"
"Sure, son" Morris put his silverware down and looked up at Lindsey.
"Uh, since these guys are eating like they haven't in weeks, can I...can I go out? Catch up with a friend?"
"Who is this friend?"
"Stevie."
"I don't think I've met him before."
"It's a girl. Stephanie." Lindsey tells his father while his brothers start making kissing sounds and hollering like wild men at the mention of someone of the opposite sex. Typical. Morris shoots them a look and they quiet down. He looks thoughtful a moment and Lindsey was this close to calling the whole thing off.
"Do you have any money?" Morris asked.
Lindsey takes his worn leather billfold out of his back pocket and checks his funds over. "I've got a 20 and some change"
"Take another ten." His father says, standing up to give his son a little more. "Shoot. I've only got twenties. Ah well, take the twenty."
"Wow, thanks Dad."
"Be back by eleven, fill up the tank if you have any left over. There should be a little in the glove compartment if you're short."
"You mean I can use the car again?"
"Yes, you can drive my car but if I see even a scratch" he warns.
"Yes, sir. Can I use the phone again?"
"Quietly."
Lindsey nods and goes back to the hall phone. This time, a man with a stern, authoritative voice picks up and he freezes.
"Hello, Nicks Residence. Who may I say is calling?"
"Yes, sir. My name is Lindsey Buckingham."
"Are you calling for Chris?"
"No, um, I'm calling to speak with Stephanie."
"She's working on her studies. May I take a message?" Lindsey begins to speak but Jess interrupts him. "Hang on." Silence and a little muffled talking goes on in the background then there is a click.
"Hey, Lindsey! I'm sorry about that. Mom usually takes my calls. Daddy is kind of...square."
"It's okay."
"I hope he didn't scare you."
"No, not at all."
"You're not nervous?"
"No." Lindsey lied.
"Cool! I'm glad you called back."
"I actually wanted to ask you something"
"Uh-huh?"
"If it's okay with your folks, I'd like to take you out. I got my driving privileges back and maybe I could pick you up, we could see a movie."
"That's sounds great. When can you be here?" she asks.
"Well, where do you live?" he replied and she fell into a fit of giggles.
"That would help, wouldn't it?"
"Yes, it would" He loved to hear her laugh, a smile spreading across his face. He scribbled down the address only to realize it's not far from his own. "Small world" he comments.
"Oh?"
"I could throw a rock and hit your house" he says and she giggles again.
"Then I should be getting ready. Gimme a half hour, okay?"
"Sure" he said.
"Bye, Linds." She hung up and he felt on top of the world. What was he going to do to occupy himself for a half hour waiting for her, though?
Stevie hung up and did a little happy dance before getting to work on her hair and makeup. She picked out her clothes, choosing something casual yet flirty. "A movie! I wonder if he will put his arm around me!" she asks herself, giggling girlishly at the prospect as she got dressed. She couldn't contain her excitement, unable to stand still while fussing with her hair and applying a fresh, natural make up look. He's so cute and he already said he liked me, it's only a matter of time, she thought.
