Chapter Five
Burn was going home, having enough of the SkyWing kingdom. She didn't care for the brutal dragons or the fights. She wanted to go home. So in the morning, she had found Copper and told her she was going to leave. Copper accepted this, saying that Blister and Blaze wanted to stay. Which was fine with her. Less time with her sisters and more time with Nile. She had a million questions to ask the young dragonet, and then together they could work out the mystery. But when she arrived back at the SandWing palace, expecting to run and find her friend, Nile was coming to her.
"Burn!" Nile cried, lunching herself towards Burn. "How were the SkyWings?"
"Horrible. But I'll tell you that later. Tell me what's happened here first."
"The usual." Nile said, clearly wanting to hear Burn's story. Burn smiled, she could feel her eagerness.
"Can you believe that Queen Copper is more brutal than Oasis?" Burn stated, directing Nile out of the courtyard and into the palace. This was a private talk, not for anyone else but Burn and Nile. And Burn told her. Everything that had happened, but paused at the end of the fight between the IceWing and NightWing. Nile was looking as green as Blaze had.
"Did he really... rip of his head?" Nile whispered.
"Yes, and there's fights everyday. We can visit, you and me, wouldn't that be a lovely vacation?" Burn asked, and Nile giggled.
"There was another fight after that," Burn said, now serious. "Between and SeaWing and... and SandWing."
They were flying to the Scorpion Den. After Burn had told Nile the story and asked if she knew anything about Strike, she declined that she did. But she had said that she knew someone who lived at the Scorpion Den who might know. So then they took off, but it wasn't until about two hours later they arrived. Nile angled her wings and flew down in front of the den, followed by Burn.
"P-Princess Burn!" one of the guards squeaked. "It's an honor to h-have you here." he scurried out of the way to let Burn and Nile through.
"Okay Nile, lead the way." Burn said as soon as they entered the den. The main streets where so crowded that Burn and Nile lost sight of each other from time to time, but one everyone noticed that the SandWing they were pushing around was Burn, they got out of the way.
"I guess being the princess can be useful." Nile said to Burn. Burn grunted by didn't say anything. Branching off the main streets were smaller, less crowded streets that housed many sick or dying dragons in the tents lining the streets. Merchants also walked up and down the streets, spotted Burn and ran towards her, saying things like: "Special low price for you, princess" or "this would look lovely on you".
"Go away I'm not interested!" Burn thundered when she had enough. The dragons hurried away, leaving their path clear. A SeaWing rushing by them accidentally bumped into Burn's shoulder, tripped over his trailing cloak, and fell on the sandy stone. He turned his head and Burn saw she only had one eye.
"P-Princess! I'm s-so sorry! I must be m-my trick eye." the SeaWing rushed up to Burn and brushed some sand off her shoulder.
"Stop that!" Burn shouted. "Stop that and go!" the SeaWing darted away, turned the corner and vanished.
"Burn! Why did you do that?" Nile demanded.
"I... if... if my mother... if she found out that... this SeaWing bumped into me, she would kill him." Burn lied. She had felt a nasty impulse to shout and kill, but for no reason at all. She must control this new feeling. Nile shook her head.
"Alright then Burn. Well, let's go," Nile lead Burn through more streets, the structures becoming smaller, then turning into shacks which turned into tents, the poorest of the dragons sleeping on the streets. "In here." Nile said, pointing into a scruffy tent.
"Oh?" a female voice came from the inside. "Who's there?"
"It's me, mom!" Nile shouted, rushing in while pulling Burn inside as well.
"How is my little dragonet?" asked the SandWing who Nile had wrapped her wings around. The dragon wore many necklaces and chains around her slender neck, her ears and wings were a little to big. Also, her scales where as pale as the moons that shown in the night sky. But she was nevertheless, SandWing. She looked up and saw Burn. Her face immediately hardened. Burn and Nile's mother had never met, not in all her years of knowing Nile. It's just something Burn didn't like to talk about, while Nile's mother looked nice and friendly, Burn's mother was less than decent.
"Lovely to make your acquaintance, Burn." she said coldly. Burn was actually sort of relieved that she didn't use her full title of princess. It wears you down after a while.
"Burn! T-this is my mother, Beetle," Nile said quickly as if to brake the tension. "W-why don't you sit down and I-I'll get a drink!" Nile rushed away into another room of the tent. Looking around, Burn saw that Beetle lay on some worn out pillows, and her tail was wrapped around a dragon egg.
"Oh, when is it... hatching?" Burn asked, trying to break the ice.
"She's due in three weeks." Beetle said, gazing affectionately at the egg. Burn saw the tiny shadow of a small dragon tapping on the egg shell.
"You don't know it'll be a girl. No dragon knows until they hatch." Burn stated.
"My mother," Nile said, scurrying back into the room, carrying a tray with three teacups laid on it. "It the only dragon in Pyrrhia who can tell the future." Burn snorted. Both mother and daughter stared at her.
"Don't give me that dung!" Burn growled. "No dragon can tell the future unless they're an animus and have enchanted an object that allows them to do so." Or if you're a NightWing. Burn thought suddenly. And she was going to give Beetle this new information she had just remembered when she cut her off.
"'One does not need objects to tell the future, but a quick mind,'" Beetle recited, rubbing a spot between her eyes. "Alas, some dragons don't believe that. Observe." she took one of the boiling cups of tea and splashed the contents around the mug until there was a tiny whirlpool in the liquid. She showed it to Burn who gasped. It showed an image of Strike's death. "You came to me, ready to ask questions about this SandWing's death. I was able to ready myself with the knowledge that I don't know anything about him," Burn opened her mouth to argue back but Beetle interrupted her. "However, I do know a dragon who does know everything about him." Her eyes, brown eyes glazed over and she said:
"The dragon you wish to know,
Can not help you with your goal.
However find me the eggs of five,
And I shall not deprive you of the knowledge of which you seek,
Although I do wish to speak to you about the peril you are in,
And the harm you will bring."
She stared at the dragonets who were dumbfounded. "A NightWing gave me this prophecy awhile ago, and told me to tell you about it when I met you."
"Who is she?" Burn asked, sure this was the answer to everything.
"I do not fully know. She would not tell me her name when she came and asked me for my services. She did tell me where I could find her however."
"Where?" Nile and Burn asked together.
"She lives in the ruins of the old NightWing kingdom, and has been waiting to meet you for a very long time Burn."
