Chapter 31
"What happened next Bachan?" Hibiki asked hoping to get to the fighting part of the story again and I laughed at his eagerness.
"Well not soon after, another ninja war broke out and Manami heard rumours of Sasori being reanimated. She was so excited at the idea of seeing him again that she searched every village and forest in the war zone for him. She had finally gotten close to his whereabouts but by the time she got there she was too late. Sasori's soul had been freed from it's constraints and he was out of her reach once again. Instead she saw his puppet body being used to battle other reanimated shinobi. She became so angry that she confronted the boy who was using him. He was another puppeteer and had Sasori's mother and father puppets with him too. She fought him in a fit of pure rage but before she could kill him she realized that he reminded her of Sasori. The passion he held for puppetry was just as strong as the man that she loved so she decided to spare him that day. Luckily for her the boy found her after the war, not forgetting how much she cared for Sasori and he gave her Sasori's puppet body as a peace offering, telling her he didn't need it anymore. She gladly accepted it and knowing how much she missed him she kept his body in pristine condition knowing it was the only thing she had left of him. She then continued to find a way to bring back Sasori and keep her promise." I finished off the story I had been telling and they both stared at me in awe.
"Did she keep her promise to Sasori?" Kasumi, my eldest grandchild asked me.
"If there is one thing I teach you today it's that you can never bring back the dead, dear. Manami searched for a way to bring him back for years, she had searched so long that she hadn't even realize how much time had passed. After years of researching and failing she decided it was finally time to give up." I replied smiling slightly as my grand-daughter hugged me tightly in tears.
"That's so sad" Kasumi replied tears, prickling her eyes.
"Pft. You're over reacting Kasumi" Hibiki, her younger brother, teased her. She stopped crying only to glare at him and hit the overconfident boys head - hard. "Ow! What was that for?" he growled at her as she smirked triumphantly.
"That was for being so cold!" she replied happily and he rolled his eyes at her. "What happened to Manami, Bachan?" she continued to question and I smiled as her and Hibiki sat down in front of me to listen intently.
"Well Manami decided it was time for her to move on with her life and decided that she was going to put all her efforts into breaking the curse of her immortality. She eventually succeeded and continued to live on with her life. Even then her life wasn't perfect. She met another man who she fell in love with but he unfortunately didn't feel the same and their relationship quickly ended. Out of their relationship though came a chance at a new life. Manami had become pregnant and she had a beautiful, healthy baby boy who she loved dearly. She watched him grow up and have children of his own and for the first time in centuries she finally felt happy. Her only ever regret was breaking her promise to her beloved Sasori but she would never forget him and the love she held for him" I informed them.
"That story is so romantic. I'm glad Manami got her happy ending but I wish Sasori got his happy ending too" Kasumi sighed while Hibiki made a face of disgust.
"That story started so well but you ruined it with all the lovey dovey stuff Bachan" Hibiki said childishly and I chuckled at him.
"Shut up Biki!" his sister snapped at him and before arguing could ensue I told them both to calm down. They both apologized to each other quickly knowing I didn't like it when they fought with each other and I nodded in approval.
"Did Manami ever see Sasori again?" Kasumi asked with a saddened look in her eyes.
"Yes she did" I began only to be interrupted again.
"Really? Did they get married?" Kasumi asked quickly and Hibiki leaned in closer seemingly interested in the new development.
"She didn't see him physically, children. She saw him every night in her dreams. He would come to visit her and make sure she was alright" I continued and Hibiki rolled his eyes at my answer while Kasumi seemed annoyed.
"I didn't mean like that Bachan. I meant did she ever see him in person again?" she asked.
"No dear but she knows that one day very soon that she will see him again. The day when her life comes to it's inevitable end she will see him again and apologize for breaking her promise to him. Only this time she will be at peace with herself and hold no regrets in her life, knowing she lived it well and to the fullest" I replied and Kasumi gushed over how beautiful it all sounded while Hibiki just looked bored and a little annoyed at his sisters 'girly' reaction.
"You're not telling them about that ridiculous story again are you Okasan?" my son asked as he walked into the room and I smiled at him as he came over to kiss me on the cheek.
"It's nice to let children dream. Besides just because you don't believe in it doesn't mean that the kids can't. You don't know if it's true or not, Dei" I scolded my son and he rolled his eyes but smirked at me.
"You're right, my apologies Okasan" he bowed and I shook my head at his sarcasm. "Alright kids, it's time to go. Grab your stuff and let's go" he said and they all hugged me one last time before they left.
I sighed and walked upstairs into the spare room and sat on a chair beside the bed and looked at Sasori's puppet body hanging at the other side of the room. I felt an overwhelming sadness come over me but I lay my head back and took a deep breath remembering all the people that I, Naomi Chiyo, loved so much. I really had built a nice life for myself under my new name and I couldn't be more proud of my son, his beautiful wife and his two adorable children.
"You look happy" I heard someone say and I jumped looking at the doorway to see... no it couldn't be.
"H-how?" I stuttered out to none other than Sasori who just smirked at me in return. I finally let it sink in that he was finally here as he made his way over to me and sat on the bed. I felt tears of happiness sting at my eyes as I hugged him tightly and wouldn't let go. "I missed you so much!" I exclaimed with an overwhelming joy that I had struggled to feel in a very long time. I felt the hole that was in my heart finally mend as I breathed in his scent and held him tighter.
"You're going to choke me to death" he teased me and I instantly loosened my grip uttering a string of apologies.
"I'm so sorry I broke my promise to you Sasori" I cried and he pushed me away from him to look into my eyes.
"What are you talking about? As far as I'm concerned the only promise you ever made to me was that you would make me happy and you know what Manami? You made me the happiest I have ever been in a long time" he comforted me and I hugged him again finding it hard to believe all this was real.
"You've made a nice life for yourself Manami" he stated, while looking around the spare room and at the extensive collection of photo frames that decorated every corner of it.
"Yea I did, didn't I?" I smiled letting him go and staring at him in awe.
"And those two grandchildren of yours are quite adorable" he continued and I nodded, agreeing with him. "But that son of yours can be quite the handful. Very stubborn just like the person he was named after" he smirked and I rolled my eyes at him.
"If I can remember correctly, you could be just as bad as Deidara when it came to stubbornness" I retorted and he chuckled at my response.
"I guess I was" he agreed and his attention went to the photo behind me.
"So did you ever tell your son that you left his father because you were scared of commitment or did you just stick to the story of he didn't love you so ran away?" he quizzed me and I frowned at him.
"You know it wasn't like that. We just had our differences" I argued and he shook his head at me.
"Yeah you're right. He wanted to marry you but you couldn't let go off me so you ran from your problems" he replied.
"I know but I was young back then and I made mistakes but I learned from them" I exclaimed and he smiled at me.
"Do you know why I'm here Manami?" he asked me and it suddenly dawned on me.
"Am I dead?" I gasped and he gave me a sympathetic look but nodded.
"I'm here to take you with me. If you're ready to come with me that is" he replied and I looked back at the photos that littered the room with my family and friends, smiling at the memories we shared.
"Yeah, I think I can go now" I said feeling a peaceful feeling rush over me like a wave. Sasori smiled, standing up and held out his hand to me. 'I'm sorry Dei, Kasumi and Habiki. I love you all so much' I thought to myself as I gladly took his hand and he helped me stand up.
"You look even more beautiful than the day I left you" was the last words he said to me before a blinding light overtook my vision. I'm finally at peace.
