Chapter 11

“Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.” -Albert Einstein

Saturday was the official mark of the end of an era. Why you ask? Let’s paint a picture to better explain.

Nicholas Kincaid was sitting in his room watching TV, normal.

He was watching Pretty Little Liars, sort of normal.

He had done nothing productive all day, very normal.

He had no plans to do anything productive for the rest of the night, also very normal.

He was doing all this on a Saturday, normal.

Samantha was not there, not normal.

For the first time in the history of their friendship (barring when they both got the flu in the seventh grade and were too sick to see each other, and even then they talked on the phone), Samantha and Nick were not hanging out on a Saturday.

Then again, this was not the first time in the history of their friendship. Because really, there was no history of their friendship because their friendship no longer existed. The history itself is relative.

But either way, Nick was watching a teenaged girl’s show by himself and wondering what Samantha was doing. He was pathetic. So he decided to be extra pathetic and call Tobias. Tobias had to understand Nick’s pathetic-ness.

Three voicemails later, Tobias finally picked up.

“Hello?”

“Tobias?”

“Nick?”

“No, it’s you from the future.”

“Don’t bullshit me Kincaid,” Tobias said.

“Never my love.”

“My love? Wow you’re lonely.”

“I’m always lonely without you,” Nick retorted.

“I knew it.”

“Wanna hang out?”

“It’s Saturday.”

“And?”

“You hang out with Samantha on Saturdays,” he said.

“Not anymore.”

“Not anymore? You’ve been friends with Samantha since like the first grade and every Saturday except for that week during seventh grade you have hung out. Even in elementary school you guys would at least have a playdate.”

“Do you have a point?” Nick asked.

“Why are you not hanging out with her now? What the hell happened?”

“Samantha and I aren’t friends anymore.”

“What!”

“You heard me.”

“I don’t understand,” Tobias said.

“Samantha and I are no longer friends. What’s left to understand?”

“But, uh… One second.” The call cut off for a second and Nick could hear Tobias talking to someone, almost arguing. He figured he must be hanging out with Meredith. He was shocked that Meredith didn’t already know.

“Tobias?” No answer.

“Tobias, stop talking to Meredith and talk to me please. I’m the pathetic and sad one, remember?” There were rustling sounds and then Tobias was back on the line.

“Hey, yeah sorry.”

“I called you for a reason dude.”

“I know, I’m sorry,” Tobias said. “Meredith and I were just comparing notes about how our best friends didn’t tell us some very important information and how they’re horrible friends.”

“Is this going to be a lecture or are you going to make me feel better?”

“I haven’t decided yet.”

“Come on Tobias.”

“You know, Meredith just gave me a good suggestion. Instead of talking to me about how much you miss Samantha‒”
“I didn’t say that,” Nick said.

“You didn’t have too. And you should go tell her how much you miss her.”

“I don’t want too.”

“You have too.”

“You can’t make me.”

“Well you won’t have anybody to talk to then,” Tobias said, promptly hanging up and leaving Nick alone.

He turned off the TV and spent five minutes sitting there in silence before he decided to go out and do something. He would not go and tell Samantha how he was feeling, they were natural feelings anyway, but he would go out and would no longer mope.

After driving around for about twenty minutes, Nick settled for a small diner off the interstate. He went in, sat himself down on one of the plastic booths and flipped open a menu. The diner was empty except for him and a few other people, all of which he paid no attention too.

But after his waitress brought him his coffee, he looked up. That’s when he saw her.

They were like some kind of fun house mirror, each with their coffee on the same side of the table and their menus in the same hand. It was disturbing on so many levels.

He stared at her, not realizing he was staring, until she looked up and met his eyes. Her eyes widened and he assumed his did too and he looked back down. He was almost ready to order when she plopped down opposite him in the booth.

“Whatcha getting?” Samantha asked. Nick said nothing, he just kept flipping through the menu.

“Nick.” Nothing.

“Nick, come on.”

“Nick?”

“I know you’re probably upset with me but you’re still my best friend.”

“We’re not friends anymore,” Nick said.

“Since when?”

“Since the other day when you said Luke cared about you more than I did. When you walked away I took that as the end of our friendship.”

“But neither of us actually said it was the end though,” Samantha said.

“But you didn’t rush over to my house or to invite me over even though it’s Saturday. I think that’s a pretty good sign that the friendship was over.”

“Nick…”
“Don’t Nick me.” He looked at her now, closing his menu and placing it at the edge of the table. “You know I’m right.”

“Come on, I didn’t‒”

“You didn’t mean it? You sure sounded like it,” Nick said.

“You’re right. I did mean it at the moment. But Nick, you’re my best friend in the entire world. I was stupid and I hope you can forgive me.”

“Are you still with him?”

“Luke?” she asked.

“Yes Luke.”

“Yes, I’m still with him.”

“Then I can’t forgive you. The root of all of our problems is Luke. So don’t expect me to forgive you,” he said. Samantha looked at him, her head slightly tilted to the right, her puppy eyes on full blast.

“There’s nothing I can do to persuade you?”

“Nothing.” Nick shrugged and fiddled with his folded menu, wondering where that waitress was.

“Okay then.” A silence ensues.

“Can I still sit here?” she asked.

“If you want.”

“Then I will.”

The lone waitress arrived and brought Samantha her fries and went to go get the coffee pot to give them a refill before taking Nick’s order. Once she left to get the pot Nick’s stomach growled and Samantha giggled.

“Here, don’t worry about ordering anything,” she said, pushing the fries towards him so it was in the middle of the table.

“No, I’m fine. I can get my own food.” He pushed it back towards her and she pushed it back. They did this for a while until Nick finally relented and waved away the waitress. They shared the fries before leaving the diner and going their separate ways.

It wasn’t much but it was something.

A/N: Yes! I was successful on updating on time (I apolgize to those in a different time zone where it already might be Sunday for them). How'd you guys like it?

I'm apologizing in advance because I know the next chapter will be choppy and not as good as I'd like for two reasons. One, my spring break is ending Monday so I'll be back at school and won't have much time. Two, although I have an outline for the entire story, I don't have outlines for individual chapters anymore. I was supposed to have one more but I combined my original chapters 10 and 11 (the scene where Samantha finds out about Luke cheating was supposed to be it's own chapter). So I apologize.

Speaking of the next chapter, it won't be posted until May 9th. Why so long? (Wow that is a long time). Well during the month of April I will be doing Camp NaNoWriMo and writing my story Two Sides (the summary is posted). I would update on that Saturday, May 2nd, but that is the second day of my league meet for swim and the day of prom. So I'll be a little busy lol. So a chapter will be posted the next week.

I have not decided if Just the Highlights will be posted during the month (I'm out of pre-written chapters but they're quick to write) but there will definitely be an update May 3rd (since the updates are much shorter and easier to write than the ones for Broken Record, sorry guys).

So if you decide not to read Two Sides and don't read Just the Highlights, I'll see you around. I will be available to reply to comments and such (I love talking to you guys too much), there just won't be any updates on this story :( I'm sorry! Hope you'll read Two Sides though, I'm really excited about it.

Oh and last thing. In the last chapter I revealed the beautiful trailer I had made for this story. But I'd also like to see how you guys interpret the story through making a trailer or a cover. So if you can make either of those, could you maybe make one for me? I'd love to see them. If you make one it'll be put into the next chapter and said chapter will be dedicated to you!

The photo on the right is who I have cast as Candace, Kiernan Shipka :)
