Pulling my hefty suitcase behind me. I leave the large city airport through the shiny automatic doors. Reaching outside. I squinted, I took a dark pair of sunglasses from above my head. I place them down over my eyes to keep from the blistering sun.
Great. Another hell.
Stares followed me while I stork forward across the busy road. Maybe it's the ripped jeans and leather jacket, paired with a grey midriff top and cute grey high boots, or maybe they just haven't seen a girl before.
Rolling my eyes in irritation. I search around myself. Over to the left side of the carpark I spot a young woman watching me from the distance. Blonde curly hair lay over her shoulders. I couldn't make out her clear blue eyes from where I'm standing but, I remembered them. She has her arms crossed while she waited for me to reach her.
Smoothly stopping in front of Olive, my big sister. First noticing I'm taller than her by four inches. Well it has been six years since we've seen one another.
"Lake?" Olive's shocking gaze took in my appearance. She purses her lips, gesturing to my attire. "What are you wearing?"
Boldly taking off my shades, I raise an eyebrow. "Olive, I'm wearing clothes." I sass back smarty, taking in her clothing noticing she's wearing a black uniform, with a small symbol above her left breast pocket.
"Real mature Lake." Olive snaps back, rolling her navy coloured eyes at the same time I place my shades back on. Olive tells me to follow her to the car.
Once we buckle in the cherry red pickup. Olive turns on the engine when I decided to ask where she's taking me. Facing the window, I watch the pedestrians coming and going around us before Olive responses. "It's your choice. You can either go to see grandma or come to the house and rest? We know how long the journey takes from New York." Long journey. Since I slept most of my way through the plane ride, it seemed like five minutes.
"Grandma's." I utter, faintly. I hear Olive sigh. I didn't look back at her. The tension in the car was great but I didn't want to change it. Why should I try and talk to Olive? She's basically a stranger to me. Someone who has the same blood and that's it.
While Olive drove, I took in the new area. Instead of crowded flats with dark black alleys, streets bursting with intense energy and oversized skyscrapers that try to reach the heaven in the skies. Richburg is buried in heat, with pretty one floor houses spaced next to each other, dressed in a white paint. The area's hardly filled with people and cars. You're not in New York anymore Lake.
After what seems like a lifetime of awkward silence with Olive trying to ask me questions which I disregarded and crappy music. Olive finally slows down in front of a white petite block building. A bright sign hanging firmly above a wide clear glass window reading, Tanner's Café. Motion could be seen inside from where I'm sat outside.
After Olive parks up in one of the empty parking spaces. I began to unbuckle my strap when Olive clears her throat.
Dragging my cold gaze up to hers. Olive stares at me in wariness making me sigh. "Look Lake- Please behave, I understand you're going through... stuff but don't be rude to grandma." Quickly unfastening my buckle, huffing. I open the car door, slamming it behind me. I ignore Olive shouting my name and make my way inside the café.
A soft ringing noise announces my presence to the individuals inside.
The dining area is made up of tables and chairs, all wooden with a red theme. The room's lite making the area give off an open and warm feeling. You could have dropped the lightest feather and still hear it as they entire room went silent. There's about twelve people in here for early breakfast, some young, some old.
Why's everyone so bloody nosey? It's not like I'm naked.
A countertop nearby, stood a lady. A lady who gave off a great deal of authority. She's smiling broadly at me. Standing routed to the spot. After a few seconds Olive comes to stand alongside me. Looking at Olive now I realise she's glaring at me and I smirk, amused.
If she thinks she can boss me around she's got another thing coming. I've been taking care of myself for the last six years... Why would I need a babysitter now? I don't need no Mary Poppins.
Olive started to open her mouth when another voice spoke. "What a beauty you are, Lake." Their tone of voice husky. I spin to see that same woman from the counter standing ahead of me. She has silver hair pulled back neatly behind her shoulders in a ponytail, expressive silver eyes and a soft button nose. "Isn't your sister a beauty Olive? Take them glasses off so I can have a better look at you." Grandma demanded.
I frown, really? I take them off anyway and tag them onto the front of my top, then stare up at my grandma.
"There she is... Now look at my sons' two beautiful daughters." Grandma gestures to everyone in the café in pride. "My, if he was here now, he'd be so proud." Grandma muses. Proud? Yeah right.
Noticing some individuals nod and smile around us. I watch when others move their bodies closer to listen in. I glare at them and they look away stunned.
"...Come into the kitchen with your sister and I'll put something together for you while we talk." I nod, following her willowy frame passing the counter where a bear of a man stood in the same uniform as Olive.
"I'll be a short while, Nico...," he interrupts her. "Take as much time as you need Ava." Nico grins in clear respect, before turning to face me, he loses his smile. "It's nice to finally meet you Lake." Nico states. I nod my head and follow Grandma and Olive into the kitchen. But not before rolling my eyes. It's nice to finally meet me. Ha! Don't make me laugh.
