Chapter 10
A/N: Okay, so FYI, this is the last chapter. Also yay because exams are over and AP Bio wasn't that bad!
When Biana came to Havenfield, Sophie was not too surprised. But when Fitz followed... That surprised her. With one quick glance at her brother and Sophie, Biana pulled Sophie into the room.
"Thank goodness you're back," she began, enveloping Sophie in a hug which Sophie gladly returned. "Now we have some business to discuss."
Sophie laughed and sat down at the edge of the bed. "First- what did I miss when I was out?"
Biana smiled and sat down next to her. "Oh nothing much," she commented. "Nothing crucial, just my brother pining over you."
"Hey!" Fitz protested, bursting into the room. He gave Sophie an apologetic look. "Sorry. I couldn't help overhearing."
Biana laughed. "Of course you couldn't," she teased, standing up and walking to the door. "I'll leave you two alone."
Sophie mouthed a quick "thank you" and waved as Biana left, making a mental promise to call her on the Imparter later. Then, she turned to Fitz.
"So..." she stalled.
Fitz sat down next to her. "Uh, sorry about what Biana said," he started. "You can just, um, forget that."
Sophie's face fell. "Oh. Okay."
"No, no it's not like that," he apologized, taking her hands. "I did mean what I transmitted."
"Really?" Sophie asked hopefully. He nodded.
"But I think I should probably tell you what I saw in your mind first."
Sophie stared at the floor, hoping it wasn't what she thought it was.
"Your mind was a sort of corridor," he explained. "Except this time it had something like black water because you were broken. I couldn't stay in the black water and I hadn't found the nook yet."
Fitz shot her another apologetic look and Sophie knew she wasn't going to like what would come next.
"And the door next to me was... It was..." He took a deep breath. "It was labeled with my name."
Sophie's eyes widened and she resisted the urge to pull out an eyelash, resorting to clamping her hands over her open mouth instead.
Fitz hung his head. "I'm sorry, I really am," he said. "But I had to escape the water, so I went inside."
Sophie pursed her lips and looked up at him, trying to avoid his eyes and stay angry. But he looked so much like he regretted it. And he didn't have anywhere else to go. She sighed, "What did you see?"
Fitz didn't quite meet her eyes as he quoted, "Beautiful teal eyes... Rock star black hair... Movie star smile... Fluttering heart."
Sophie turned fire-engine red as she buried her face in her pillow, unable to look at Fitz. It was true and she had thought all of those things... Multiple times. But she never thought she'd actually hear him say them out loud.
They sat there for a few moments and Sophie tried to pretend that the conversation didn't exist and that Fitz wasn't sitting right beside her. But he was.
Fitz tore his fingers through his hair as he broke the silence. "Look, Sophie, I'm sorry. But we have to talk about it some time, don't we?"
Sophie didn't remove her head from the pillow as she replied, "No we don't. We can just forget about it."
"No we can't," Fitz reasoned. "Especially me. I can't."
A thought occurred in Sophie's mind as she looked up at Fitz. "Wait is that why you said you loved me?" she asked incredulously. "Was that just for pity?"
This was her worst nightmare. Fitz finding out about her crush on him and only saying he liked her back to make her feel better.
"What?" Fitz shook his head. "No I meant it."
Sophie crossed her arms. "Oh really? Not just because you saw I had a crush on you or not just so that you could heal me? Not just because you wanted to take pity on some Level Three girl who you thought was just your friend but liked you as more?"
"Sophie what are you talking about?" Fitz asked. "You're not just some girl, you're so much more than that."
"I'm a freak," she muttered, turning away. "It's fine, Fitz. You don't have to give me a pity date."
Fitz grabbed her arm. "Look. I meant every word I said in there. You're smart and beautiful and talented and kind." He lifted her chin so she met his eyes. "You're not a freak and you're special to me. I. Love. You. And if you don't believe me, I'll prove it."
With that, he leaned in and placed his lips on hers.
Sophie's mind was still echoing with Fitz's "I'll prove it," when she realized this was what that was. This was him proving it. And for once, she didn't feel like her crush was inferior.
When they broke apart, Sophie couldn't help but smile. The kiss was just as perfect as he was. She played the idea in her mind over and over.
Fitz Vacker just kissed me.
Meanwhile, Fitz was giving her a tentative smile. Her heart fluttered when she met his eyes.
"I told you," he began. "Sophie, why don't you trust me?"
Sophie threw her arms around him and cut him off. "It's not that I don't trust you," she whispered in his ear. "It's that you're so perfect and I'm just... Me."
"Please," Fitz disagreed. "You're the most powerful elf our world has known. You're the Sophie Foster. How am I out of your league?"
Sophie laughed. "Have you seen your hat at the end of exams? The number of crush cuffs in there is astounding."
"True, true," Fitz agreed, laughing. "But that's because they don't know me. They just... How do I put this?"
"They think you're handsome," Sophie finished for him. "Don't worry it doesn't sound cocky."
Fitz grinned. "Exactly. But if they really got to know me, they probably wouldn't want to date me."
"You'd be surprised at the number of girls who would..." Sophie muttered under her breath. She cleared her throat before Fitz could decipher what she had said. "Anyway, I guess you understand why now."
Fitz wrapped his arms around her. "I most certainly do." He looked around the room. "What do we do now?"
"We do what we have to do," Sophie planned, standing up. "We save Keefe, defeat the Neverseen, and stop the Lodestar Initiative."
Fitz smiled. "And we'll do it together."
A/N: I know it ended kinda abruptly, but Sophie's healed and that's what I wrote this story for. Besides, I don't think this fanfic was one of my better ones, or one of my better stories for that matter. As usual, I'm thinking of starting a new one after this. It's weird because I didn't come to Wattpad to write fanfictions, but I am now. But if that's where Wattpad wants to take me, that's where I'm going to go. Thanks again guys for being awesome, and see you in the next story! (BTW- I'd love to take requests, but I have a cliché idea in mind.)
