Humans.
We could not die.
Scientists didn't know why. Priests didn't know why. Some self-proclaimed prophets claimed that Christ had returned and had bestowed his followers with the gift of Eternal Life.
An Atheist proved them all wrong by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and surviving.
So some said that the immortality gifted to humankind was a harbinger of something much worse:
Disease, famine, poverty, overpopulation. Much worse than anything we had faced before.
When soldiers stopped dying in Iraq and suicide bombers did not receive their spots in paradise, people began to resort to doing what any immortal could do:
Anything they wanted.
So while diseases ran rampant, people pilfered pockets and looted stores. A local militia, against all odds, beat a French convoy and took over a nuclear missile silo...
And in that day, without anyone knowing, a god decided that he was ready to return to his job.
...and they aimed for Russia. So Russia returned the favor. The U.S. was the next to strike. Europe was done for, and half of America had evaporated along with their snow-covered enemies across the sea. Australia seemed like a safe haven until ninety-nine percent of the residents contracted a rare strain of Ebola. Asian countries waged war with each other as South Americans tore themselves apart. The remaining Americans refused to give up, for they could save the world if they believed in their Constitution.
But a piece of paper doesn't rewrite the past. It only tells of it.
And then for a time, there was silence. Because people began to realize after a while, the revelation shocking them through their core: We can die again.
Brief seconds later, a girl opened her eyes. She held her mother's hand, but her mother did not hold hers back, for her eyes were glossy and her breath nonexistent. And the girl grabbed a backpack and stuffed it with as much food as she could fill, leaving behind all memories stored within plush toys and picture frames. What was the point in remembering if it hurt too much?
And the girl grabbed her mother's old gun and scavenged but six bullets. She considered using it on herself, but she was too frightened to go through with the task.
And the world, like many theorized, did not end with the Sun exploding.
It ended when a young, scared girl opened her eyes,
and a god, many miles away, begged for forgiveness.
