Chapter 40:
I had the phone pressed against my ear before I even knew what I was doing. She was not going to be calling him at all hours of the night while he slept in my bed. I knew he would be mad at me for answering his phone, but I didn't care.
"What the hell are you calling him for?" I said hatefully into the phone.
"Well, if it isn't the slut herself." She slurred back at me. Jenna was not sober; any idiot could tell she was on something.
"Jenna, he is sleeping. You shouldn't be calling him like this. He made his decision. You need to move on." I said. I tried to stay calm and be sympathetic, but she needed to know it was over. If anyone understood how much it hurt when he decided he didn't want to be with you, it was me.
"He's just playing you, little girl. You're so fucking stupid. He thinks he can only see that little shit you call a daughter if he lets you fuck him. He told me he doesn't love you. He calls me every night, begging to touch me." Her voice was like acid. She had hit a nerve and dug at my insecurities.
"That's not true. He loves me." I cried without meaning to. He did love me. Right?
"He told me last night he never loved you. You have always been a game to him. Stupid bitch, he is going to fuck you until he breaks you and then take that little girl away from you. He told me how you have these fucked up panic attacks and that you're unstable. He says you are a terrible mother. He has it all planned out. He's going to break you and when you snap, he will take you to court for custody. He's going to tell her she can call me Mommy."
"You will never go near my daughter." I screamed into the phone.
Ezra jumped up and looked at me. My knuckles were white as I clutched the phone tightly in my hands.
"Riley, what's going on?" He asked with a sleepy voice.
"Give my man a goodnight kiss for me. Tell him I can't wait to see him tomorrow." Jenna said as she hung up the phone.
I dropped the phone on the bed and Ezra picked it up to look at the caller ID. He cursed when he saw who just called.
"Is it true?" I asked him. I lifted the blanket up over me to cover my bare chest.
"Is what true, Riley?" He asked, trying to pull me closer to him.
"Jenna said you are only fucking me to see Jessa. She said that you planned to try to take Jessa away from me because I'm crazy. She said that you don't love me and you call her every night." I had no emotions. I was in shock.
"Riley, you can't believe what she is saying. You know me better than that." He said, trying to kiss me and distract me.
I pulled away and turned my head to him. "Prove it then, Ezra. Show me your phone."
He flinched and I knew my answer. He had been talking to her.
"Riley, please, baby. It's not what you think. She called me and told me she was using again. I was just trying to talk her through it." He climbed up on his knees and grabbed at my arms. I fought against him and pushed him away.
"No, do not touch me." I warned him. I wanted to dig my fingers into his skin and make him hurt as much as I did.
"I love you, Riley. You know me." He pleaded, lowering his head into my bare skin. There was no tingling where he touched me; I felt nothing.
"Get out." I said, pointing to the door. He looked at me with red-rimmed eyes and tears were falling. He sobbed into me, shaking.
"Please, don't do this to me. I won't survive losing you again." He held onto me tightly.
I closed my eyes and felt him against me. Skin to skin, body to body. This had to happen. I had come a long way over the years. I was not going to be his doormat.
"Leave now or I'm calling the cops."
I was sitting at the kitchen island when my Mom walked down in her nightgown.
"Riley, it's 5:00 AM. What are you doing up?" She yawned and then got a closer look at my tear-stained cheeks. I took a sip of the hot coffee and let it burn all the way down. "What's wrong, peanut? Did something happen?"
"He's still talking to her." I said, looking into the cup.
"Come on, sweetie, he loves you. Anyone with eyes can see it. Are you sure it's not in your head?" My Mom asked gently.
I snapped back at her. "What, you think I'm crazy too? Maybe you should go be a witness for them when they take me to court to steal my daughter."
"What on earth are you talking about?" My Mom asked, confused.
"Yeah, Mom, didn't you know? I am bat shit crazy and he is only fucking me to get custody of Jessa."
"Where did you hear that?" My Mom asked suspiciously. I could tell she didn't believe it.
"Jenna told me when she called his phone tonight. I heard it before he did and answered. She said he calls her every night and I asked him to show me his phone. He admitted to talking to her."
"Riley, there has to be another explanation. He wouldn't do that to you."
"He told her I have panic attacks. She said Jessa was going to call her Mommy!" I threw my mug against the wall and it shattered. Coffee splashed all over the kitchen walls.
"Riley, calm down. That girl is trying to come between you. Trust me. I know how he feels about you." My Mom said softly.
"How are you sure?" I asked my mom.
"I didn't want to tell you this, but you need to hear it." She said, sighing. "The other day we were talking, he asked me if you had ever talked about wanting to get married someday. He said he was afraid to bring it up to you because it was something he wasn't sure that you ever wanted."
"What?" I asked, my face was pale.
"Riley, I think you need to find out where he went before something happens that can't be undone. I'll watch Jessa. Go get her Daddy and bring him home."
I ran upstairs and pulled on a sweatshirt and shoes. I grabbed my pink phone and hit his name. I brought the phone to my ear as I struggled to pull on my gym shoes. The phone rang and rang, but he didn't answer.
"Please answer." I begged when I dialed him again and got the same result.
On the third time, it rang once before going to voicemail. He declined my call.
I switched over and began texting him. Luckily my phone has autocorrect because my fingers were shaking.
Me: Ezra, I'm sorry. Call me.
I saw he read the message but didn't respond.
Me: Tell me where you are.
He read it again and no response.
Me: Please tell me where I can find you.
He read the message and I finally saw little bubbles pop up indicating he was typing.
Ezra: I am sitting in my car outside the house.
I placed my hands over my mouth and smiled. He didn't even leave the property. Maybe I was crazy for doubting him.
Me: I'm coming out. Don't leave.
