Chapter 2
"Hey, girl!" A high pitched voice called out.
Everyone turned to the front door and saw a short Latina with wide hips, curly brown locks, a beautiful tan despite the current weather, a flower crown purchased at the mall, a black tank top, and white high waisted shorts. If it were anybody else, they would have thought South Salamanca looked crazy when it was raining outside and only 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit). But this was Brin's best friend we were talking about and Brin would never want to hurt South's feelings even if she was dressed for the beach in almost hurricane weather. South walked in the house, free to track mud in with her rain boots and drip water from her umbrella. Without command, butlers and maids trailed after her with many cleaning supplies.
Daniel then picked up a pillow to hide his face, but a butler than snatched it from him and straightened it back on the couch. It was an automatic reflex Daniel was portraying but who could blame him? South has had a not so secret crush on Daniel since she was born. Seriously, Mrs Alma Breyer was in the same pregnancy class as Mrs Salamanca, quickly becoming friends. From picking out each other's baby's names, going on the same diet and even sharing the same pregnancy pillow. Ironically, while Mrs Breyer was delivering Brin, Mrs Salamanca was standing right next to her, chatting away. In fact, she didn't even notice Brin was born yet until the nurses handed Brin to her. Almost a day later, South was born, while Mrs Breyer was talking to Mrs Salamanca. Daniel was one of the first to meet South. South then grabbed on a lock of his hair and smiled for the very first time. So it was no shock to why she still had a special feeling every time Daniel was here.
"Missed me, Babboo?" South said as she entered the room. She kissed Daniel on the cheek, sinking into a star struck expression.
"Love the shorts! Where from?" Brin asked.
"Daddy got them." South answered, with a touch of blue in her voice. Her father was almost never home and often tried making up for it with expensive presents. After all, South's great- great- great- great- great- great grandfather invented the poncho, automatically making her entire family very popular. To this day, they can still get a free poncho everywhere they go.
Alice sighed. While Daniel was annoyed by South, Alice despised her. When South was five years old, she offered Alice a salon makeover the night before picture day. She gave a her a very crooked cut, including some bangs she once saw on her mother's magazine. With the family hairdresser, Jaques, swamped with a celebrity disaster, he was unable to make amends with Alice's dilemma. Students still call her "Edna Scissor hands" as a result of the episode.
"Why don't they have any cut marks on them? Did your dad hide the scissors from you on a tall shelf?" Alice quipped.
South shot a glare in Alice's direction then turned to face Brin. "How are we supposed to party at Coachella in that?" She said, gesturing to her crutches.
Colour drained from Brin's face and her blue eyes widened. "What party are you talking about?" Brin said, trying to keep South's big mouth from spilling the secret. Just imagine how much trouble Brin would get into if her parents found out about this!
"Did you forget, B? We're going to Coachella tonight! You said your parents were okay with it!"
Brin didn't even wanna look at her parents' faces. Her father's gelled hair and eye brows would be furrowed and her mother's radiant smile would be gritted and frowning.
"Brin Oliver Breyer, what is going on?" Mr Breyer said sternly.
"We are going to Coachella. Obvi. Didn't Brin tell you guys?"
Emma was still standing right beside South. Getting a little angry with South interrupting, she continued.
"Anyway, My contract is now expired. I am no longer your assistant."
"Can't you just sign a new contract? Saying that you can work here for seventeen more years? Surely, the contract-" Mrs Breyer said.
"No, I have checked. Sadly, someone or rather something snuck into my office and shredded the contract." Emma said, trying to be free of the Breyer family. She then held up what was left of the new contract, now torn to bits. If watched by an untrained eye, this would have been blamed on the dog. But it was actually paper shredded, something Emma did very long ago.
"I have already accepted a job at Camp Ever Free. It's a wonderful camp that has sports, crafts, and many competitions." Emma explained, itching to go upstairs and pack.
"Can't you just sign the contract after summer break?" Mrs Breyer said.
For almost a second, Emma looked dumb founded. She then cleared her throat."How did you know the camp only lasts the summer?"
The Breyer's then explained how as teens they went to the camp together and is how they first met.
"How ironic! I'm going to Camp Ever free with my big brother, Juan. You should totes join, B."
Brin winced. Just the thought of mosquitos, bugs, sports and- gasp- communal showers were enough to make her spine tingle. "South, you know I love you but I don't love you plus communal showers, no private bathrooms, and no hot tubs."
"Actually, Precious, we were thinking about enrolling you all in the camp. South's mother gave me the idea." Mrs Breyer said, a little hesitant to hear her daughter's response. Even if Brin looks her age, she really can go into quite a tizzy when things don't go her way. And the closest thing that any of the Breyer kids have done to Ruffing it was wiping their own mouths and tying their own shoes. After that, Alice vowed never to go shoe shopping alone.
"What?" Everyone said in unison.
"Yes. I have given some thought to it and I think we need you guys to get a feel of the wilderness. After all, Camp Ever Free was where me and your father learned how to treat poison Ivy with water, a toothbrush, and toothpaste."
Alice's face was red. "But but we weren't born in 1812! We have ointment and tablets now. And we don't churn butter. Arthur does." She gestured to the red haired man in a snazzy suit. Arthur then adjusted his bow tie, to prove Alice's point.
"No buts. You all are going to camp with Juan and North." Mrs Breyer admonished.
"South." South piped up.
"Sorry. Go pack up. Camp starts tomorrow!" Mrs Breyer singsonged.
"Fine. Arthur pack my things." Alice said.
"Actually, Arthur isn't coming. Nobody but you guys are."
Brin then have a loud 'no' long enough to be on a movie. The classic no that the character says. They sadly walked up the stairs, mumbling complaints as they trudged up.
Wait, thought Emma, I'll be going to camp with the Breyer brats all summer then coming back to serve them again.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
