Chapter One: Programming

I'm lying on a metal table, wiring connected to all parts of my body from head to toe. All I can do is lie down strapped to the table, like something out of a horror movie. The computers show images of my body, each one lighting red. I take a while to settle down, straining not only under the metal straps but through the torturous wires that never seem to end.

"Dean, relax," my father orders, but I can't relax, not while I'm told this procedure could go wrong. "Please son, if you keep moving, the wires will get all tangled up." I try to do what he asks, thinking back to the many fond memories I had of my little brother. Brother. My only friend and relative who I can't seem to find. I close my eyes, hoping maybe it would make things go faster. I trap myself in one of my favorite memories.

Sam and I playing tag in the yard, shooting fireworks into the air even if our father hated it. We were happy, but memories could not replace the missing piece from my heart. Instead, I changed the memory to Christmas Sam and I decorating the tree for the holidays, talking about the futures we've had. Everything. But one stupid mistake made things worse.

More thoughts consumed me as I find myself present the night my brother vanished. We were having fun by the lake when things went horribly wrong. Sam lost that sparkle in his eye, the same one I always saw. I try to get through to him but it was like this sudden hole in my heart. With that thought and my determination, I relax, desperate for the procedure to end. Minutes later, I reawaken. The wires were no longer connected to my skin. I was sitting up dressed in a hospital gown. The entire lighting of the room shone in my face, briefly blinding me. It was hard for me to tell if I was actually out of those memories. The hospital doors slide open and my father, along with a human sized android, entered the room. The android always creeped me out, with its unblinking eyes and emotionless facial features. It really made me want to grab it and toss it into a garbage disposal.

"Is it over?" I asked, desperate to get out of the hospital.

"Yes, son, it is. You can go change now." My father responded. I nodded and grabbed my clothes that were lying on the counter. So many things were playing out in my head, making me wonder if the powers that my dad promised me were going to take effect. I changed into the bathroom and walked out with my father, although my mind always thought back to where my brother was. I worried that maybe after all these years, my brother turns out to be dead. I shook my head. No way was I going to let that one sink in like that. I would find my brother and I will bring him back. Ever since my brother disappeared, my father had always blamed me like I was at fault for losing him. That was the reason he had special abilities implanted into my system. I never had a say in it, but here I was, listening to everything my father said as if it were going to bring Sam back.

We were driving down the highway, heading back toward our house, when things went horribly wrong. In front of us, a woman stood dressed in tattered clothes. I screamed for my dad to watch out, but by the time he looked up, my father swerved and hit a tree. I yelled and suddenly a shield came up around me and my father just as a tree came toppling down. I glanced over at my dad and saw that he wasn't moving. Tears threatened to appear as I held up my wrist and almost instantly, a holophone appeared in front of me.

"Computer, connect to emergency services!" I exclaimed.

"Connecting to emergency services." the computer responded, and they brought emergency services up.

"Emergency services, how can I help you?" the android said on the other side.

"Help! My father and I got into a crash. He's not waking up!" I yelled desperately. Suddenly, I started smelling smoke and my fear overtook me. I told emergency services the car was going to explode. I broke the car door off and climbed out, but as I was getting ready to get my father out, emergency services arrived just in time. But I got escorted by a bunch of androids as they were trying to get me away from the car. Almost instantly, the car exploded, and I cried out for my father, who was trapped inside. I yelled and fell onto my knees around me. The androids started short circuiting, like something was cutting off the flow of energy. I wanted to cry, wanted everything to all be a dream, but no matter what, it was too late. My father was gone, the last living relative I had left. I was alone. I looked down at the ground just as someone stood in front of me.

"Dean Winchester?" the voice said. I glanced up and saw a man dressed in a tan overcoat and a suit and tie. "My name is Castiel Novak. I'm with Mystic Bounty. Would you come with me?"

Six Months later

I was back in my apartment, practicing my abilities, most of them involving electromagnetic frequencies. I sat my extra room up to help me go through and get better at my powers; I shot beams of energy at the targets, destroying each one. I readied myself for the next round when my com system went off. At first I thought little about it, but when the system kept ringing, my thoughts were consumed with the belief that it must have been urgent. I paused my training and slid my hand over the com until my boss' daughter appeared in the hologram, the young girl in the video was Claire Novak, she was in her early twenties and always had her hair down in front of half her face.

"Dean?" she said. "You there?"

"Claire, as I live and breathe," I said. "How are you? How are your parents?"

"Let's cut to the chase," Claire responded. "I hear that you're the best bounty hunter around."

"Yeah? So?" I responded and walked into my kitchen to grab a bottle of water.

"We've been looking into your brother's disappearance, but there's more," she explained. "There's a bounty on an older woman. She's in New Orleans, Louisiana. Most of the locals claim that she's using strange dolls to commit voodoo."

"Voodoo?" I questioned.

"Yes, you idiot, Voodoo, you know when you make a doll that looks exactly like the victim and-" Claire started, but I instantly held up my hand.

"I don't need to know that." I said.

"Are you going to take this bounty or not?" Claire asked. I paused, thoughts kept barreling through my mind. Maybe the witch was the one who kidnapped my brother, and I might figure that out as soon as I could. Wherever my brother was, I was determined to find him.

"Alright," I said, placing my bottle on the counter. "I'll hunt that bitch down."

"Good luck Dean, don't worry, if you need anything then I'll be there, just one call away." I turned off my com system and walked over to my closet. Pulling out my carry on, I packed my bag and zipped it up. Placing my bag over my shoulder, I walked out of the apartment, calling a cab to take me to the airport.
