Chapter Six
Inko let out a howl,"Izuku !" Her son was in the midst of kneeling on the ground and rummaging through his bag, but he stopped to look back at his mother. The woman stared at him with worried eyes and frizzled hair from a long night of crying.
"Yeah," asked Izuku slowly, perplexed by what she was so worked up about.
"Did you pack underwear ?" She asked the question swiftly and without hesitation. The teenage boy cracked a smile finding the joke hilarious, but her pale face told him something else.
"Are you being serious right now !", squeaked Izuku with pink in his face."Did you just actually ask me that ?"
His mother answered with many swift nods."Did you pack it Izuku, you can't stay in this funk stage forever ?"
Izuku groaned,"Yes, I packed it !"
"What about toothpaste ?"
"Yes, Mom."
"Soap ?"
"Yes."
"Aloe ?"
"W-Why would I pack aloe ?"
Inko threw her hands into the air and dashed from the living room and into the bathroom. The woman yelled across their home as she searched for the product she desired."Because Izuku you spend so much time out in the sun, and these types of precautions are necessary. What are you to do if I am not around and you need aloe, or sunscreen, or deodorant ? Someone has to remind you of these necessities."
"Ms. Midoriya, your worries are a little outlandish if I am being honest with you."
Inko left the bathroom at the familiar voice and walked where she was moments ago. Behind Izuku stood Yagi with a hand on the boy's shoulder."W-Wha-What do you mean by outlandish ? My baby boy is going away, and it isn't anywhere safe." Tears began to well up in the woman's eyes as she looked at the two.
Izuku jumped up and waved his hands as he rushed towards his mother, and Mr. Yagi followed closely. Izuku tried to stop the waterworks."Mom, I promise you I won't die or anything like that."
Yagi cleared his throat and pulled Izuku back to his side."What young Midoriya is trying to say is: U.A. supplies the best facilities anyone can dream of, and we make sure our aspiring heroes are kept safe. We always have a healer nearby and don't take any child's life lightly."
Inko looked at the lean man and sniffled as she rubbed her nose."I know that, but it's just so hard to let him out of here. When you've been able to watch your child for as long as you can remember and have always keep them safe, i-it is real..hard to let them go and grow up. I'm not going to be able to put a band-aid on his cuts anymore, or smack him on the back of the head for acting like a dingus and getting himself hurt."
Yagi chuckled awkwardly and rubbed the back of his head."I already said I was sorry about the slime monster."
.....
Izuku sat on the train with his bag and a tortured look on his face. He felt something heavy in his chest and wanted to let out a roar, but how could he ? He had just been given a chance to chase his dream, yet he felt selfish. The boy looked at thin man next to him and let out a sigh. He opened his mouth slightly, but quickly closed it, not wanting to ask too much.
Yagi turned to Izuku and smiled,"Something wrong ?"
Izuku bit his lip and began to battle with himself."N-No, b-but I wanted to ask you something. Do you think you could visit my Mom every once in a while ?" The boy rubbed his thumbs together as he explained,"S-She just doesn't like being around you know, and she really does enjoy your company." The boy whimpered as he hid his face in his hands,"I was kinda all she had because Dad was never around."
Yagi laughed at Izuku and smacked him on the back of the head. The curly-haired boy looked up at the man and complained,"Ow ! What was that for ?"
"I just always find your two sides amusing."
"My two sides; what two sides ?"
"It's just odd that you like to use your emotions to fuel yourself, but you also struggle to show off you caring nature at times, despite it being who you naturally are. You always put people before yourself, and because of that you think asking anything of someone is unherolike, it is like you want to carry the whole world on your back, when there are plenty of people to help you."
"Is that a yes ?"
Yagi chuckled," Of course, I care about her too."
.....
Konitsu sat behind her desk and stared at the door. She looked down at her watch for a split second and let out a huff. The door then opened and both Izuku and Yagi walked in with gassed looks. The older of the pair showed Izuku to his seat and took his own."Being late isn't a great first impression Midoriya."
"Sorry," mumbled Izuku.
"But I can make an exception for you this time, especially considering how our head scout holds you in such high regard."
"Does he now ?", snickered Izuku with a half-baked smile."All I ever hear from him is I need to get better."
"That's called constructive criticism," said Yagi in an attempt to defend his honor.
Izuku laughed as he nudged the man with his elbow."I know."
Konitsu focused on Izuku and leaned towards the edge of her desk."I have heard a lot about you, and even seen some amazing feats of yours, but I just can't put it together. Why was a child with your talents not chosen all those years ago, or even picked up by another, more traditional school ?"
Izuku gave her a quizzical look and scratched the side of his head."You've...read my report before right, haven't you ?"
"Of course I have ! Something you must know about me is I am very methodical, and I have an eye on everyone in here. Nothing, and I mean nothing happens without my knowledge, and that includes the induction of new heroes in training. I..I know your faults, maybe even better than you, but I'm not blind talent like Nezu was, I can see the limitless potential in you."
Izuku was shocked, he had never her praise quite like that before, not even from Yagi, the man that was the first to tell him his dream was possible.
"The thing about the world is people are scared of something different, a change, an anomaly, and that is exactly what you are Izuku. No-one had ever seen a quirk that has immeasurable power before, but very few have ever had such consequences. I know about your...long list of injuries, and I know about your... outbursts, yet despite that I want you to join our program and build upon the legacy of your-"
Yagi kicked the woman's desk and ruffled Izuku's hair."I am ecstatic to hear how fond you are of Young Midoriya, but don't you think it's about time to get him integrated into his team ?"
Konitsu reluctantly agreed through her teeth,"Yeah, how about you take him to where he needs to be and come right back."
.....
Izuku walked with Yagi and quietly took in the beauty of what surrounded him. The grass the path curved through was freshly cut and not a single blade was out of place. The trees along the plot of land were trimmed precisely and around the towering hardwoods were meadows of bright orchids. As Izuku continued to admire what surrounded him he bumped into the back of Yagi.
The man took a step to the side and said,"You were acknowledging the beauty weren't you ?"
"Uhh yeah, I guess," sheepishly admitted Izuku.
"So I take it you didn't realize we made it ?"
Izuku slowly looked up and felt his heart stop. His breathing ceased and his blood chilled from shock. He was speechless at the small, yet comy building that was erected in front of him.
The building was made of undecorated concrete asides from the A carved into its front wall, but the outside was upkept. Flowers were planted by the door to the building and tinted windows were evenly placed across the building's two stories.
Izuku shook his head quickly and looked at the man next to him. All the two could do was exchange wide smiles. Yagi stopped smiling and slightly frowned, he knew what was next. The blond man put an arm around Izuku and took a gulp. The man laughed and looked up into the sky, not wanting Izuku to see him teary eyed." I'm proud of you Izuku and I have dreamed of this for years now, but I'd be lying if I didn't tell you I have also dreaded it. For six years now, I have taught you just about everything I know about the necessity to be a hero and you never questioned me, not once. You listened to me like I was a hero and because of your want to learn you did. You have grown up so much over these past years, and I know you'll get better, but things are going to get more difficult. I won't be around as much anymore and you'll have to become your own man. The choices you make from here on out are yours and yours alone, and trust me you will make mistakes, we all do. With the decisions you make you will be praised if they are great ones, yet you must also wear the bad ones on your sleeves with pride. I want you to make me a promise."
Izuku looked up at the man who still had not made eye contact with him."Y-Yeah, I can do that."
"Promise me you won't lose sight of who you are while chasing you dream." Yagi paused to take a deep breath. "You'll learn in time Midoryia , but for now just prepare for the next chapter of your life. This is where your step towards being your own man and hero begins, and is where the legend of our greatest hero begnins."
"Mr. Yagi, thank you, for everything."
Yagi took his arm from around Izuku and laughed at the boy."You don't have to thank me for anything. I may have gotten your foot in the door, but you were the one that opened it."
.....
Izuku took a deep breath as he slowly opened the door to his new quarters. The door was quiet as he opened it and walked in. The first thing Izuku took notice of was the sheer size of the place; the resting area alone was the size of his apartment.
In the middle of the resting area sat three people around his age with handfuls of playing card. He wasn't able to make out their words, but he could hear bickering between two boys, however it stopped when the door behind Izuku banged. Everyone caught ear of the bang and turned to look at Izuku. A familiar girl looked at Izuku for moments and a glow of remembrance spread across her face, however she wasn't able to speak up quickly enough.
One of the boy's next to her stood up and dashed quickly towards Izuku. He stopped a mere foot from Izuku and pushed up his glasses. The boy towered over Izuku and looked at him with bold, blue eyes. Izuku was shocked when the muscular boy extended a hand out towards him."Tenya Iida, and I take it you are the boy transferring into our team."
Izuku took the boy's hand and answered slowly,"Y-Yeah, I'm the new guy, although I'm not sure if I am really a transfer."
"Hey, I thought you said you were not enrolled anywhere," said Ochaco.
Izuku laughed a bit and began to play with his hair."Well I wasn't, but then after that day some stuff happened, I got a call, and now I'm here."
"Sounds like bullshit to me," said a tall boy standing next to Ochaco. He was tall, even taller than Iida. He took a step towards Izuku and asked,"You expect us to believe U.A. just let some kid off the streets into their prestigious program ?"
Izuku began to study the stranger, trying to pick out anything about his new peer. The boy's skin was smooth and a warm brown. He looked down at Izuku using his almond like eyes, and his head was topped with a short haircut that was still untamable.
"Rip step back !", yelled Ochaco as she grabbed the boy by the back of his shirt.
"Ahh !", screeched the boy as he fell backwards and onto his bottom."Ow ! What was that for ?"
"Stop being such a jerk," ordered Ochaco.
"I was just messing with the guy, jeez !", complained the tall boy.
Izuku looked at Ochaco and awaited an explanation. Ochaco sighed as she waved her hand in the air."Don't mind him, he just likes to goof off a lot."
Iida looked at Izuku and Ochaco."Do you two know each other ?"
"No, well yes, actually kinda," said Ochaco.
Rip stood up and began to laugh,"Oh, I get now. You're the kid that saved Uraraka that one day. Man, that was pretty funny to hear her talk about. She was complaining about how you got chewed out, and how you deserved to be in a course."
Ochaco huffed," Don't mind him..." The girl trailed off and asked the question she meant to ask days ago."Umm, what's your name, I never caught it that day ?"
"So, they finally let you in Deku," soffed Bakugo as he leaned against a wall. He stepped from the wall and tucked his hands into his pockets. Bakugo was walked by Ochaco and stood inches from Izuku. Bakugo leaned forward and teased,"I guess Yagu finally jumped through enough hoops for his little pet to a chance."
The room grew quiet as each boy looked into the other's eyes. Everyone could feel the tension, and Izuku cut through it without hesitation."You should get out of my way Kacchan."
"Or what Deku," said Bakugo with a smug smirk.
"I'll move you myself," threatened Izuku.
"I'd like to see you try !"
Izuku grinned and lifted his fist but something wrapped around it. He tried to fight against it, but it was too strong without his quirk."I get out of my meeting finally and the first thing I see is this ! Midoryia , Bakugo, I want to see you two outside in five minutes !"
.....
Aizawa stood outside with his arms crossed and his eyes focused on the boy walking out of group A's quarters. His face was deadpan as usual and next to him stood the rest of his students. Ochaco asked the man," Mr. Aizawa, why did you erase the borders where we spar ?"
"Don't question my teaching methods Uraraka; you can't even follow a simple order."
Iida tried to reason with the man," But is it not a bit extreme to have a new student spar with Bakugo so soon; Midoriya hasn't even been with us for a day ?"
"Nor has he received any formal training," added Aizawa.
"Then why is he in our class ?", asked Ochaco as she began to worry for the boy's sake.
"You'd have to ask the person that enducted him," blountly answered Aizawa.
Izuku stopped as he reached the dirt plot where Bakugo stood. The boy looked at Aizawa and then at the blond boy inches away from him. His finger slowly twitched as he stared at Bakugo and his eyes began to grow stern.
Rip cupped his hands around his mouth as he yelled,"Beat his combustible ass Midoriya !" Ochaco gave the boy a shocked look and he gave her a shrug."What, no-one likes him ?"
Ochaco ignored her friend and asked Iida,"Why is he so calm ?"
"I'm not sure, maybe he doesn't know how powerful Bakugo is, but that wouldn't make any sense, the two seem to have a connection ?"
Aizawa stood with a deadpan expression as he howled,"Begin !"
Izuku struck with hesitation and threw a hook Bakugo's way. He evaded the strike and gave Izuku a strong punch to the side. Izuku took the blow and retaliated quickly, showing no sign of wear. He caught Bakugo on the jaw and caused the blond boy to stumble slightly.
Bakugo smiled slightly as he felt a mineral like taste on the tip of his tongue. He softly touched where his lip was busted, and rubbed the tipid liquid between his fingers."You have a lot of fight in you for someone so useless."
Ochaco looked at Aizawa and asked,"Why isn't Deku glowing ? When he used his quirk the other day there was like this green electricity bouncing off of his skin."
"Midoriya's quirk isn't like most," explained Aizawa."He has a reservoir of energy inside of him, and the farther he dips into it the more it begins to seep out. Even right now he's using it, but it's so little that human eye can't see it."
Izuku gasped for air as Bakugo landed a strong strike into his gut. The boy hunched over and Bakugo drove his elbow into Izuku's back. Izuku fell to the ground with a thump and grimaced. A cut just above his eyebrow began to flow like a raging rapid and poured into his eye.
Bakugo began to taunt Izuku,"Come on Deku, is that all you've got ! You've had the past six years to bask in your failure and this is the best you can muster ?" The blond boy placed his foot on Izuku's back and pushed him back into the ground as he tried to stand up."That senile bastard wasted valuable time on you, a nobody just like his daddy !"
Izuku feel for the trap and his anger began to flare. He placed both of his hands on the ground and lively, electric sparks began to pop off of his skin. His face transformed into a snarl and pushed up with enough force to knock Bakugo off balance. The blond boy fell onto his back and looked at the glowing boy standing over him.
Ochaco, Iida, and Rip all stood up in excitement and leaned forward with awestruct eyes. Aizawa was less mesmerized by the power and was more focused on the effect it had. The man felt a jolt of energy surge through his body when Izuku exploded.
Izuku clenched his fist as he looked at Bakugo and gritted his teeth. Bakugo recovered to his feet and raised his hands, the two were ready.
Bakugo was done playing with his food and planned on embarrassing a powered Izuku in front of everyone. He wanted to ruthlessly crush the boy's spirits and give him a taste of reality.
Izuku's mind was clouded and in the moment all he cared about was Bakugo. He saw the face of the boy that repeatedly drowned others in pain to elevated himself. He was the face of the boy who was chosen over him because of a controllable, flashy quirk.
"Don't short out on me just yet Deku, I want to kick your ass first !"
"Didn't plan on it !," screamed Izuku with his fist raised.
Izuku went on the offensive against Bakugo. Each strike was thrown with the intention of rocking Bakugo, and despite the two's equal physical abilities Bakugo was able to win out. The blond boy dogged each punch and countered with a quick jab, thrown with the purpose of wearing down Izuku."
After minutes of Izuku trying to pummel Bakugo, and the other boy countering with quick strikes Izuku began to tire. His punches were slower and his nose began to pour with blood, despite never being struck there.
Everyone watching could see Izuku was at his end. The boy was kept on fighting, but his muscles ached, head throbbed, and lungs begged for air.
Bakugo knew he could easily finish Izuku with an accurate shot, but he wasn't out to just win. He dogged a punch from Izuku and gave the boy a strong hook to the jaw. The punch caused blood to fly from Izuku's mouth and for his head to whip. Bakugo then gave Izuku another hook to ensure he was in a daze and then he went to finish the battered boy off.
Bakugo propelled himself over Izuku and grabbed the boy from behind. He then lifted him into the air and slammed him with everything he had left. Everyone watched in shock as the move was delivered with the intent to break Izuku, and it did so.
The boy felt bones crack at the impact and he let out a loud grunt. He was in visible pain and rolled over while holding his side. His breathing was slow and his mind was broken into fragments. Izuku held his side tight as he pulled himself to his feet. Izuku knew he lost, but his pride wouldn't allow him to stay down.
Izuku stood wobbly like a drunken man and watched as Bakugo walked away from him. As Izuku watched the boy leave him behind he began to realize the truth. He really was years behind everyone else like Yagi always warned him, and he needed to get stronger, a lot stronger.
