Chapter One
Everyone has a dream growing up, it is a part of human nature that can not be helped. They aspire to be great and want to achieve the impossible. Long ago children dreamed of being professional athletes, becoming a writer, or even being a medical professional, however everything changed with evolution. At first the change in humanity was fascinating, yet pedestrian compared to what awaited in the future. People would develop strange abilities like being able to light a flame with their fingertips or smell for miles, but as time passed the evolution continued to advance. The interesting abilities turned into something much more captivating. People went from sparking a modest flame to having complete control over it. This spike in quirks' power led to a development that would change the world forever, superheroes. However, with the good also comes the bad. The wicked will always follow in suit of the righteous.
Heroes dominate society. They are on billboards smiling while they hold a can of whatever drink they are trying to convince a young child buy, and making appearance on television talk shows to tell the world about how wonderful their life is. The fame becomes enticing to the youth of the world, and they all have one dream, make it big. Some want to do it for the money, some want the fame and their face plastered across the world, some are born with spectacular quirks and have no real other choice, and some are just different, they want to help people.
Izuku Midoriya was one of these people. He did not want the money or the fame, just a chance to make people smile. Being a kind and helping person was coded into his DNA, and he couldn't help it. He dreamt of being at the mountaintop, but to make it there was going to be a long and hard road very few have ever considered traveling.
.....
The small boy stood in the long line snaking outside of the comic store and curving onto a nearby sidewalk. He held the latest issue of Heroes and Hot Tea in his hands and smiled. His bright emerald eyes scanned the colorful cover and only one word could be used to describe his mood, giddy. The front page was a photo of his favorite hero, and symbol of peace All Might holding up the show's host Mr. Nakamura as he sat in a small chair and sipped a steaming cup of tea. The hero was adorned in a black suit that tugged on his large muscles and made his bright blue eyes pop. All Might smiled as he always did, so Midoriya smiled right back at the still image. Izuku was on a high of joy and his day was only going to get better. After having the magazine signed, him and his mother were going to his doctor's appointment to have his quirk check-up. Izuku had a quirk, he knew that for sure, but the exact one he did not know. The preschool quickly contacted his mother after sending he sent his best friend flying with a simple touch during a game of tag.
The boy's mother placed a hand on his back and gave him a slight nudge. She looked down on him with fond green eyes much like his and sweetly whispered,"The lines moving Izuku."
"O-Oh, S-Sorry !"
.....
Nearly an hour had passed, but the Midoriya family had finally made it inside of the store known as Heroes Express. Izuku and his mother were a few feet into the familiar store and his eyes began to brush over the familiar place. He had dragged his mother into the store hundreds of times, although he'd already bought everything he ever wanted from the place. Heroes Express was filled with everything a child in Japan could possibly want. Shelves were loaded with magazines about heroes, and comics created to show people some of the heroes' greatest battles. Izuku turned his head and looked at the section of the store devoted entirely to memorabilia. In the corner stood cardboard cutouts of many heroes like All Might, Thirteen, and even Endeavor, but that was not all of it. There were also rows of cheap yet popular action figures and a few plushies of the same exact men and women. Izuku's mother gave him another slight push as the line began to move, and he slower inched closer to meeting the man he idolized.
The moment of truth was approaching and Izuku held his thick magazine as a smile painted his freckled face. His bright eyes seemed to glisten as the man in front of him let out a "thank you.", before walking away. Izuku stood still as All Might was revealed to him. The man sat behind a small table in a chair with his muscular thighs hitting the bottom of the entirely too small of a table. The hero looked at the young boy and gave him a kind smile. The gesture eased him, but it still felt like Izuku's feet were stuck in cement. His mother let out a small laugh and looked at the symbol of peace behind the desk."I'm so sorry. Izuku can be a little timid a times, and well with you being right in front of him, I'm afraid you may have frozen him in place."
Izuku wanted to move but his legs would not allow for it. He gave the hero behind the desk a smile, and his heart nearly stopped as the man stood up. He was even bigger in person than on tv. He stood at least seven feet tall and his long, blond hair strangely flowed behind him and into the air. He wore a suit very familiar to the one on Izuku's magazine cover, but this one was a royal blue, one of the hero's Alma mater's famous colors. The mountain of a man stepped towards the small boy on the ground and took a knee. Even when kneeling the man towered over Inko Midoriya. All Might gave Izuku another smile and extended a hand towards the boy. Izuku hesitantly reached one of his small hands up and placed it in All Might's baseball mit of a hand. The hero's face strangely contorted when they made contact and a ocean of nervousness flooded Izuku. Did I just shock him like Kacchan ? "I-I-I'm s-so sorry Mr. A-All Might number one hero symbol of peace sir !", apologized Izuku.
The man laughed,"Just call me All Might or Mr. Might."
Izuku took a nervous gulp."Okay, I'm sorry Mr.Might."
All Might released Midoriya's hand and gave him a quizzical look."You're sorry ?"
He nodded and began to sway."Yeah, I-I think I hurt you with my quirk."
"Oh yes ! You did get me with it young one, and I must admit it's quite powerful, especially for someone of your age."
"Y-You think so ?"
"Do heroes lie ?"
"No they don't, I'm sorry for-"
"Why do you apologize so much !", chuckled the symbol of peace.
"Sorry !"
"There you go again."
"So-I'll stop now." Izuku then pulled up the thick magazine he held in his other hand and gave it to the hero."C-Could you ple-please sign this ?"
"Of course ! That is what you came here for after all ?" Izuku gave the man a slight nod. The hero took the booklet from Midoriya and sloppily scribbled his name onto the cover, yet that was not all he did."So tell me...."
"Izuku ! Izuku Midoriya !"
All Might looked up from the cover and at the boy for a split second."So tell me Midoriya, what do you dream of ?"
"Being a hero !" The boy's unusual excitement quickly died down into a shy whisper."Just like you."
"Really ?"
"Y-Yes, I-I love heroes. I think it is awesome how you guys make m-scratch that, people feel safe."
"Hmm, and do you realize how hard it is to be a hero ?"
"Uh huh, everyone knows that. There is less than a one percent chance of being one, but I'll be in that percent !"
"Confidence is a good thing, although you do seem to struggle with people, and that's a big part of the job."
"It's not confidence sir, just me knowing I'll work harder than anyone else to make it."
All Might finished signing his name and gave Izuku a look. The man's crystal eyes were filled with something Izuku could not figure out. The man stared at Izuku for seconds before handing him back the magazine, but he did not let go of it when Midoriya took a hold of it. Izuku tired to pull it from the man, but the grip was too strong. He threw a puzzled look the hero's way."If you work hard enough you can accomplish anything in this world, all it takes is a your heart." All Might then smiled to Izuku,"I hope to meet you again Midoryia , but next time when you're planning on enrolling at U.A."
Izuku's brain melted at the man's words. His hero just said that to him in front of the world. The boy gave the man a nod and began to hyperventilate. The hero yelped," Is he going to be okay or do we need to get him to a hospital ?"
Inko let out a laugh at All Might."There's no need to be a hero this is just him. I think your words really got to him and now he's having a hard time gripping if everything happening is real or not."
"Oh, that's good to know. I'm glad to hear I didn't kill the young boy on accident."
.....
The lively boy sat on the hospital bed and rocked. His short legs kicked in the air as he smiled and eyeballed the gauze taped to his arm. The tape pulled at his skin and the woolly bandage began to stain a soft red. The hospital decided to do blood work to get a better read on Izuku's quirk and now he patiently waited for his doctor to return with the news. He eagerly turned to his mother and asked for the fifth time,"What do you think my quirk is ? What if I'm stronger than All Might or can like shock people, I kinda did do that to Kacchan ?"
"I don't know Izuku," admitted Inko."Yours is nothing like mine, and I never knew your father's, but I bet you it's super strong."
"Y-You think it will be ?"
"Of course !" The woman truly did not know the intricacies of her son's quirk, but she would never want to crush his dreams, or at least not in that moment.
For a brief second doubt entered Izuku's mind. The boy's smile faded away and he began to twiddle his small thumbs."Wh-What if...i-it's not you know, strong like Kacchan's and I can't be a hero ?"
"Izu-"
Inko was interrupted by the door to the room opening. Her and Izuku's heads whipped to the door and they stared at a tall slender man. He was clad in a long white lab coat and held a white clipboard in his hands. His dark brown hair was cut short and below his thin eyebrows sat his dull grey eyes, which were currently scanning the stacks of paper pinned to the board and a frown flickered across his face for a second, but he quickly tried to hide it with a fake smile. A river of worry flooded Ms. Midoriya at the man's obvious mask, but the trusting little Midoriya knew no better. He returned a smile the doctor's way and the man tried to stretch out his grin as far a human possibly could, he wanted to let Izuku down easy. The tall man pulled a chair out from under a table and sat down in it. His body sank into the old, worn material. He looked up from his clipboard after scanning it a second time and introduced himself." Hiya Izuku, I'm Doctor Fukumoto."
"Hi Mr. Fukumoto."
Inko raised a single finger and asked the man an innocent question."Where is Izuku's usual doctor ?"
"Oh, I'm the resident quirk specialist here, so when children are diagnosed with quirks I typically talk with the family about what we know. As you already know we did blood work on Izuku to try and get a better idea of what his quirk actually is."
Inko nodded her head in understanding but still gave the man dumbfounded looks."So I'm guessing you do know what his quirk is, correct ?"
"Yes ma'am, the data came back and your son had a quirk, but you already knew that. However, usually when a child comes in their quirk may be as simple as having the ability to command a small ant hill or increase their own density, very tangible things that can be explained in five minutes or less, but with Izuku here we have a unique case. His quirk is quite honestly unexplainable."
Izuku went deathly pale at the specialist's final two words. The boy took a gulp before apprehensively asking,"D-Do you not know my quirk ? Am I not going to be able to u-use it ?"
"Yo-We-I'm sorry this is just hard for me to explain," admitted Fukumoto. His bland eyes looked down at the data scattered across his clipboard and the many graphs they filled on his many sheets."Izuku's quirk is almost impossible for me to grasp, it is like a scientific theory almost. As I was detailing earlier people often have quirks that reveal themselves in normal manners that the naked eye can see." He raised his hand in the air to silence both of the Midoryias."And yes, I know that you accidentally sent a boy at your school flying, but that's not the true power of your quirk. Your cells are overflowing with ener-actually I think power would be a better word. Tell me, do you two understand how the human body works ?"
Inko cleared her throat and nervously rubbed her hands against the pants covering her legs."School was so long ago it had slipped my mind, and Izuku's only four."
"Okay then, let me try my best to simplify it for you. Do you two understand how the human body needs energy to survive and the food we consume is broken down into energy, which powers us like gasoline does for a car." Inko and Izuku gave the man affirmative nods."Well, Izuku is loaded to the brim with energy like an overcharged battery. The energy inside of him is unstable and begging for him to slip up and let it out. Actually, I can give you a demonstration so this will make more sense !" The man ran a single finger down the middle of the air and a faint blue line appeared. His hand slipped through it and he furrowed his brow as he searched specifically for something. His eyes widened in joy as he found what he was looking for and pulled out a bottle of soda. He held it in one of his hands and looked at Izuku."Could you shake this for me ?" The boy carefully took the bottle and held it in his hands with baffled eyes."Shake the bottle."
"S-Shake the bottle, won't that make it explode !"
"Exactly, that is why I need you to do it."
Izuku said under his breath, "O-Okay." He held the carbonated cola tightly in his miniature hands and viciously shook it. Brown bubbles rose to the top and the boy extended the bottle towards the man. He took it and quickly screwed off the black cap. The dark soda erupted from the neck of the bottle like it was a volcano.
The soda poured out from the tip of the bottle and dripped onto the man's hands and even began to stain his white coat."As you can see the bottle couldn't contain the buildup of gas inside the bottle. That is what Izuku's body is experiencing with his quirk. I believe whenever he gets overly excited or emotional his quirk manages to seep out and take effect. The odds are that's why he shocked that one boy and why recently you told us that he had seemed more animated than usual."
Inko pointed out,"This doesn't sound like a bad thing, just something he needs to get the hang of."
"I wish it was, but I'm not so sure about that. Quirks grow more powerful as time passes, and given how unstable it is at the moment, I worry about it having dangerous capabilities as Izuku matures."
Izuku shouted with watery eyes,"But I can learn to control it, right !" He was listening to his dream fade away with each word the doctor spoke.
"I-I don't think so Midoriya. I pains me to tell you this, but despite having a powerful quirk the chances of you ever being like the man on your t-shirt is slim to none. You're power is extremely dangerous and could hurt a lot of people if you ever lost control of it. I-I don't think being a hero is in your future with your quirk being like it is right now, the safest thing is for you to suppress it and keep it to yourself."
The room was filled with thick tension and an unbreakable silence. Inko looked at her heartbroken son in horror and gulped. She never imagined hearing a word as dangerous to describe her precious baby boy. She was unsure of what to do, so she did the only thing she could possibly think of. The woman hurried towards her son and wrapped him into a hug. The boy continued to cry into her shoulder and she joined in with him and began to bawl too."I-I'm so sorry Izuku."
Doctor Fukumoto stood up and held his clipboard firmly in his grasps. The man stood up and walked towards the doorway, but stopped before walking out. He turned around and slumped his shoulders as he let out a sigh."I-I'm sorry, truly I am, but there's nothing that can be done about this. I'd advise you to try and take him someplace where they help children better control themselves, because if not someone could get h-" The man stopped himself as he watched a single green spark flare from Izuku's leg.
