Dmitri

After seeing Sky last night at her house, I went to bed and ended up lying there for hours. Unable to sleep. At around three in the morning, I eventually got up and completed the day's paperwork. I needed to see her in person again. I needed to meet her. Seeing her at her house had done nothing to cure my obsession; it amplified it.

I convinced Ivan that we had to win the locals' favor, and that the best way to do that was to go around and introduce ourselves. A weak story, but it was all I could come up with. As we were still awaiting the file on Sky, which was supposedly going to be handed over today by the Sheriff, I suggested we start there. See for ourselves if she is a threat.

I could see the disbelief written all over Ivan's smirking face at this suggestion, but he didn't dare question me, and the next thing I know, I am standing in front of Sky's store, Sky's Naturals. Fuck, she wasn't inside. I could smell another scent in there, a werewolf scent, but hers was faint, indicating her lack of presence. As Ivan comes sauntering up behind me, I hear a ragged word leave his mouth.

"Mine," he says, growling softly.

Ivan pushes open the door, which 'tings' to acknowledge someone has entered, and his eyes land on the only other person in the shop. The woman spritzing water on the plants whips around with a confirming word, leaving her mouth. "Mine," she whispers, looking at Ivan in shock.

In my many years alive, I have witnessed many fated mate meetings, and they all go the same way. I don't know the feeling personally as I have never experienced it with anyone, but I know how it goes. And these two will be no different.

She places the spritzing bottle down as the two of them walk toward each other. Like magnets, the attraction is immediate. Ivan holds out his hand, and she takes it. Their gaze goes to their joined hands, probably reveling in the feeling of sparks where skin touches skin. All werewolves and Lycans are taught about the binding process when they are young. Along with the history of the races. For Lycans and their heightened senses, the process is apparently more intense.

"Ivan," he says, looking at her adoringly.

"Rene," she offers in return, her eyes locked onto his.

Wow, I don't know if I can stomach watching this much longer. It's quite torturous.

"Rene, do you know who I am?" I ask her, jolting her from her trance as her eyes flare.

"Alpha Dmitri Makarov, of the White Claw pack." Her words are quietly spoken, and she slightly bares her neck, showing submission.

"What are you doing here in this town, in this shop? Which pack are you from?" My tone is authoritative, meant to help her understand her predicament. She needs to answer truthfully in order to avoid being taken in for questioning, not something I want to do with her being Ivan's mate. I hope for Ivan's sake that she is not working with hunters.

Before she can answer, the sound of a bicycle outside draws our attention. Then I scent her. Sky. Spicy and sweet, with a faint undertone of rose. Immediately, I feel heady, as if her scent is a drug. I hear her dismount the bicycle and set it against the wall. She reaches the door and pauses, her heart rate accelerating. She's nervous.

"Sky's here. Before she comes in. Does she know? About you? About us?" I ask in a lowered voice.

"No. She doesn't know about me, and I don't think she knows about us, what we are. The residents here don't really talk to her like that, and she hasn't been here long enough to find out," she said quickly in a whisper.

"Tell her we're new to the town and here to introduce ourselves to the locals," I hissed out quickly.

The 'ting' of the door announces her arrival, and I am hit with the full power of her scent. I can't get over how affected I am by it. I feel drawn to her.

We all turn to look at her as she steps in. She looks at Rene first, then Ivan, and then she locks eyes with me. Big, beautiful hazel doe eyes. In the light of day, I can see the hazel of her iris blend in with a dark green that circles the pupil. It's truly mesmerizing. My heart skips a beat at the same time hers does. I can sense Ivan and Rene picking up on this interaction. They can hear heartbeats as well as I can.

She is embarrassed and uneasy, her pink cheeks giving her away. I mind-link Ivan and tell him to stop looking at her, hoping it will help ease her. I don't need to ask him twice, as he returns his loving gaze to Rene, hers locking back in with his.

Sky is gorgeous. Her beautiful red hair and dreadlocks are in a messy bun on top of her head with tendrils escaping around the sides. She is wearing a sleeveless black top with a tree-of-life symbol on the front. It hugs her breasts and waist, tucked into a figure-hugging pair of old Levi jeans, with a splotch of faded white paint on the bottom-left leg. Finished with a pair of Vans. She is effortlessly beautiful, and you can see she is wholeheartedly unaware of just how gorgeous she is.

I stare at her makeup-free, faintly freckled face as her focus moves from my eyes to my nose and then lingers on my lips. Her tongue flicks out to wet her lips. Fuck. Such an unconscious action on her part is having a very real effect on my part. A vision of her lips on mine flashes through my mind, and I can feel my body heat up, blood rushing to places that are inappropriate considering everything. As it has been for days since I scented her in the diner.

Her eyes travel from my mouth down my chest and carry on all the way down to my feet. Her eyes widen in surprise, darting to her feet as a little smile forms on her face.

Rene asks her if she is okay, and I inwardly smirk at her response about having a moment.

Rene goes on to explain the reason for our visit, and I see the curiosity in her eyes at Ivan and Rene's proximity.

I seize the opportunity to touch her by holding out my hand to shake hers. She steps forward, and as her hand touches mine, there is a small jolt of electricity between us. I mask my surprise, writing it off as a little bit of static electricity.

She pulls her hand back fleetingly, apologizing before she grasps my much larger hand again. Tingles erupt at every place our skin meets.

It can't be. Mate. Impossible.

No. A human and a werewolf, a Lycan, cannot be mated to one another. This must be something else. A trick. Or perhaps just static electricity. I look down at our joined hands, marvelling at how tiny her one is nestled in mine.

"I'm Skylar, but everyone calls me Sky," she says, smiling the most beautiful smile I've probably ever seen and flashing perfect white teeth.

"Dmitri," I say in return, aware she has already been told my name, but at a loss for anything else to say. I should let her hand go, but I can't. She glances at Rene and then back to me. She is as confused as me about what is happening here. Reluctantly, I let go of her hand. I need to leave. She is trouble, and I should definitely not be here.

"Ivan, time to go," I say gruffly, this action the last thing I want to do. Everything in me is screaming for me to stay, which is exactly why I must leave. I need to go for a run. The animal inside me wants out of the shop that has suddenly become too small for me.

Part of me wanted to understand what it was pulling me to her, but the other part was saying it was impossible, so why bother? It was a question of which part would win.
