Chapter 16: The Flight Test

I do not own Iron Man or Percy Jackson.

Takes place during Iron Man 1

Time: 0:59:23 - 1:05:33

Tony's Age: 26 years old

Percy's Age: 40 mentally, wolf body 4 (thought by others to be 7 and a half years old--aging)

By the next morning, Tony had run a few more tests that ended in similar results until finally, he figured he'd start on the lowest power.

"Day 11, test 37, configuration 2.0. For lack of a better option, and the fact Percy doesn't have opposable thumbs, Dummy is still on fire safety," Tony started looking at the camera U had connected to his arm.

"If you douse me again, and I'm not on fire, I'm donating you to a city college," Tony threatened his bot. I watched underneath Tony's computer desk knowing being undercover was my better option based upon how the previous tests have gone so far.

"All right, nice and easy. Seriously, just gonna start off with 1% thrust capacity," Tony said taking a steady, slightly nervous, breath as he held out his hands and splayed his legs out slightly hoping it would help stabilize himself.

"And three, two, one."

I felt my ears go back against my head as the whirling sound of the machines started up and watched in amazement as Tony floated maybe two to three inches off the ground and somewhat steadily stayed there.

Staying in the air for about 10 seconds, I watched Tony land back on the pad that he was using to take off and land on to help track of any information the boots may give when taking off and landing.

Of course, it wouldn't be until later that he would really check that information, but I suppose it was a good thing he was at least getting it. Not very good for his safety, but I can't really complain, he's safety standards were ridiculously low.

"Okay," Tony breathed as he landed and turned toward Dum-E. "Please don't follow me around with it, either, 'cause I feel like I'm gonna catch on fire spontaneously. Just stand down! If something happens, then come in," Tony told the bot who lowered its arm almost dejectedly.

Moving back toward the camera to help document this for reviewing for improvements, Tony said, "And again, let's bring it up to 2.5. Three, two, one."

Nervously, I watched him move off the back and go near the corner of the room before heading above the cars. Talking to himself slightly and moving the papers that had been above my desk, I watched Tony start to understand the flying ability he had. Almost instantly moving his arms and legs closer together than before and started spinning slightly in a circle as he understood the flight more than before.

As he landed, I instantly went out from under the desk and bounded over to him as he told Dum-E quickly to not douse him with the fire extinguisher. Watching the bot once more become dejected, I sat just a bit before Tony.

The last time I tried to rub against his legs while he had the electronics on, some of my hair got in the rotors and it was a mess for Tony to clean out and to help my hair get out without it coming off of me.

"Give me a second, then you can go momma-bear on me," Tony muttered toward me as he walked toward his workshop chair.

Carefully taking off the boots and the flight stabilizers, I watched him set them on his desk before finally bounding over to him and carefully seeing for myself that he wasn't hurt in any way.

He had a habit that if he got slightly burned or even a bit electrocuted, he wouldn't really care even if it could be harmful to his health.

But I wasn't smelling anything unusual other than the slight radioactive thing that was powering his arc reactor and therefore, would probably kill him.

My hope was that he would eventually realize it though and solve a problem for that because I rather Tony be alive than dead.

"Alright, you satisfied now? I didn't get hurt or anything," Tony said in a soft voice as he ran his hands through my fur.

Feeling myself melt slightly, I licked his hand in confirmation that I was done and let him get back to work.

Laying in my dog bed, I watched Tony look over the boots and gloves for anything that might've become wrong during the test run. It happened during tests three and four which is why they weren't really documented as well as the others. And test five was scrapped because of the dog hair in the suit.

With finding nothing wrong, Tony told JARVIS, "Alright, let's try and put all the boys together," as he walked toward the fitting station he created for all pieces of the armor.

Hiding back under the desk in case any the machines malfunction like Test 7 where one of the pieces of armor got flung off the arm of the fitting machine and nearly hit me back leg, I watched them strategically place the armor on Tony before he had to manually lift the face mask off the table.

"Jarvis, you there?" Tony asked as he connected the face mask onto the helmet.

"At your service, sir," Jarvis responded and I could hear him also being said on the computer which had the documentation of what Tony was seeing currently.

Looking from Tony to the computer, I moved toward the desk and put my front paws on it to really get a good look at what Tony was currently seeing.

Watching Jarvis zoom around and start to show the Heads Up Display really showed me just how much of a genius Tony could be when he didn't want to act like an idiot.

"Import all preferences from home interface," Tony told Jarvis.

"Will do, sir."

"All right, what do you say?"

"I have indeed been uploaded, sir. We're online and ready."

"Can we start the virtual walk-around?"

"Importing preferences and calibrating a virtual environment."

"Do a check on control surfaces."

"As you wish," Jarvis said as he ran the controls, "Test complete. Preparing to power down and begin diagnostics."

Oh no. I thought as I watched Tony tell Jarvis to not power down and instead asked for a weather and ATC check along with listening on ground control.

This was going to go terrible knowing Tony's luck. This would be their first test on the actual flight capabilities of the full suit in a non-controlled area.

Watching Tony leave the garage via the way for the cars, I instantly focused on the computer showing what Tony's currently seeing and felt my heartbeat rapidly as I watched him go up into the air to try and beat the SR-71's record.

Suddenly panicking over the sudden loss of vision, I instantly changed back into my human form. "Jarvis, what happened?" I demanded from the AI.

Back when Tony had finished Jarvis and installed him into the home, Peggy had visited once and during the time when Jarvis' interface was still here, she made sure that Jarvis knew I had a second form but didn't wish to tell Tony about.

It took a lot of talk between the two of them and making sure Jarvis the AI knew I wasn't a danger before the AI finally agreed to not tell Tony about me until I was ready or it became too late. Especially since he knew I was often the person that made Tony eat and sleep to try and function like a normal human being.

"It appears the ice-build up from going to high has caused the power in the suit to malfunction. I am unable to do anything until the flaps are deployed and are disconnected from the suit. Tony will need to activate them remotely.

Watching in bated breath as Jarvis calculated the time it would take until Tony became splat on the ground, I felt my breath leave me in relief as I saw the heads-up display come back online and Jarvis was able to reconnect with Tony.

"Sir appears to be fine and is heading his way home now. I suggest you turn back into your wolf form unless now is the day you would like to tell him," Jarvis suggested.

"Not tonight. But soon," I promised him as I changed back into my wolf form. My childish emotions from changing back still just at the edge of my mind. Knowing it would take maybe two hours before they reverted back into the Old-Man Wolf emotions (which wasn't fully true, my wolf emotions were similar to my childish emotions, just far more mature than a seven-year-olds brain) and feeling high-strung from Tony's near-death I didn't hesitate to go to Tony when he accidentally dropped through the roof and landed on one of his cars.

Barely reacting when Dum-E doused him with the fire-extinguisher, I made a small whine sound to him as I curled next to the damaged car he was on. I watched his head tilt back until it just rested onto the car and he sighed slightly.

It took him nearly 10 minutes to move and that was at my insistence, but as I watched him slowly get out of the armor, I raced upstairs and pulled open the bottom freezer door that had the towel wrapped around it.

Carefully jumping against the freezer door, I found one of the cool packs we had and grabbed it with my mouth before shutting the door and making my way back to the garage where Tony finally got all the armor off and was just standing there with his eyes slightly closed.

Whining softly and pushing my nose against his hand to get his attention, I watched his hurt expression slowly fall into an affectionate smile. "Thanks, bud," Tony whispered slightly as he grabbed the ice pack from my mouth and placed it on his head.

Debating if he needed another one, I watched him push some things around before making his way back toward his desk to grab the cup of coffee that seemed to be sitting on some sort of package.

He grabbed the coffee without thought but noticed the package when the sticky-note on top nearly got carried with the coffee. Seeing him get slightly confused, he turned back toward the package and set both the coffee and ice pack aside.

Watching him unwrap the package, I felt my heart lift as I realized it was the old arc reactor that Tony had given Pepper to destroy. Inside the case and just outside the metal placing that held the arc reactor in place, I saw the words: "Proof that Tony Stark has a Heart."

I watched Tony wipe the glass slightly before carefully putting it on the desk by his computer, a spot usually made from memoria that he liked to look at most days.

Watching him smile it once more, I grabbed the ice pack and handed it back to him. "Yeah, yeah, get some rest. I know the drill," Tony said softly as he placed the ice pack on his head.

He was just about the exit the door when he looked back at the gift from Pepper once more before finally locking the garage up for the night so no one but him or I could enter.
