16. Panicked

Tsukishima glanced at his phone, noticing that Yamaguchi had messaged him. He opened the message, worried.

Smartass:
Tsuki where's the medicine to help my back?

Taller smartass:
bathroom counter. stop changing our names on here idiot

|Smartass has changed their name to Professor X|

Tsukishima stifled his laughter, biting his tongue.

|Professor X has changed Taller Smartass's name to Jerk|

Jerk:
tadashi wtf

Professor X:
I'M COPING STOP IT

Jerk:
is this because you have a wheelchair

Professor X:
That and I feel like I'm paralyzed again so that's fun

Jerk:
???

Professor X:
My legs are cramping so bad I can't move them and I thought the back medicine would help cause walking and spines and shit

Tsukishima panicked for a moment. Yamaguchi's legs weren't supposed to cramp like that.

Jerk:
how are you laying down???

Professor X:
On my back. I swear I was gonna get up but now I can't move.

Jerk:
baby just relax I'm calling someone to get you up

Professor X:
Please hurry

Tsukishima called Kuroo despite hating the idea. Kuroo had always been extra careful around Yamaguchi and was currently probably somewhere close by doing a morning run.

"Hey! So glad you called man, turns out Daishou and I get along better than I remember."

"That's great. I need you to go to my apartment. Tadashi can't move at the moment and I need someone to go pick him up off the floor."

"Ah. Got you."

"Thank you."

"No problem. Has this been happening a lot?"

"No. This is the second time."

"What do you want me to do?"

"He's probably on the floor in the living room so just pick him up and put him on the couch and make sure he eats something. I didn't see him eating when I left for work this morning."

Tsukishima checked his messages.

Professor X:
Tsuki it hurts how far away is the person
It hurts so bad
I can't feel my toes
Tsuki???

Jerk:
he's on his way baby
is the pain where your stomach is or your legs

Professor X:
My legs and spine

Tsukishima took a deep breath.

"Kei? What is it?"

"His spine hurts."

Kuroo went quiet. "Hospital?"

"Um…" Tsukishima tried to think about what it would cost. But then again it might be crucial. "Go ahead. I get off in two hours."

"Alright." There was a sound of a car door closing. Then soft huffing. "Keycode?"

"Eleven, twelve, fourteen."

"Got it. He's in the living room… Hi there Yama… Hey…"

Tsukishima saw his screen light up. Kuroo had propped his phone up on the coffee table and lifted Yamaguchi. The younger male was holding back tears, hiding his face.

"Here we go." Kuroo set him down on the couch, brows furrowed. "It's okay. What hurts?"

Yamaguchi pointed to his mouth and shook his head.

"Got it. It's alright." Kuroo looked around. "I'm gonna find you some pain meds."

"He has prescription pain medications. In the bathroom. The mirror is a medicine cabinet. They're in there."

Kuroo hurried away.

Tsukishima watched as his partner panted, covering his face.

"Tsu… Tsuki."

"I'm here. I'll need to leave in a bit. I'm on break."

Yamaguchi nodded, grabbing his sleeves. It was quiet enough to where Tsukishima could hear him crying. He took a deep breath.

"I love you."

Yamaguchi whimpered.

"Save your voice angel. I'll be back. I have to hang up now, okay?"

"M-mhmm."

Tsukishima took a deep breath, closing his eyes. He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes before standing and putting his glasses back on. He left the break room, trying to push away his thoughts of his companion crying.

****

Yamaguchi gulped, wiggling his toes. He could feel them now.

Kuroo kept watching him. "You still can't move much?"

Yamaguchi shook his head.

"Yama I'm sorry this is happening to you."

Yamaguchi looked toward him, confused.

"This is all because of someone texting while driving. So fucking stupid."

Yamaguchi gulped before taking a deep breath through his nose. He looked at the walls with pictures of him dancing and walking. Standing.

He missed it and knew he might not walk again.

"Tadashi?! Tadashi are you okay?!"

Yamaguchi turned his head and saw Tsukishima. Tsukishima hurried to him, wrapping his arms around him the best he could.

He was panting softly, distressed. "Tadashi…"

"I made sure he got the medication and some water but he can't eat," Kuroo stated.

Tsukishima nodded. He kissed Yamaguchi's forehead before pressing their foreheads together. "Still hurts?"

"Lil."

"Okay. Okay, let's get you set up some. I'm grabbing our little pillow chair and some comforters. You'll want to nap after what I give you too. Just relax."

"Mhmm." Yamaguchi closed his eyes and waited. Kuroo and Tsukishima got him to sit up slightly and Tsukishima fed him, noticing that his hands were shaking.

Yamaguchi accepted a syringe full of sleeping medication, passing out minutes later and holding Tsukishima's shoulder.

Kuroo still sat there, worried.

"Is he okay?"

"He'll be alright," Tsukishima whispered. He kissed Yamaguchi's cheek, moving his hand onto the couch.

Kuroo got up. "I need to go, I'm sorry."

"It's okay." Tsukishima pushed himself further. "How are things with Daishou?"

Kuroo grinned sheepishly. He laughed. "Uh."

"Why uh?"

Kuroo fidgeted. He dropped his voice to less than a whisper. "…Boyfriend."

"Huh?"

Kuroo covered his mouth for a moment. He laughed. "He's my boyfriend."

"Ah. That's good?"

"It is! He's funny and comfortable to huddle with."

Tsukishima nodded.

Kuroo left soon after and hurried home. Tsukishima laid next to Yamaguchi, running his fingers through his hair. Yamaguchi slept through the afternoon but didn't move his legs as much when he slept, just small jolts where his body tried.

When he did eventually wake up he messed with Tsukishima's hair, trying to take his mind off of whatever he was thinking about.

"You okay?"

Yamaguchi looked up and then down.

"That's a no. Can you feel your legs?"

Yamaguchi held his fingers close together.

"Tadashi I need to call your doctor if that's happening-"

Yamaguchi held the blankets tighter.

Tsukishima called his doctor, who said to contact his physical therapist. The physical therapist said to take him to the hospital.

Her voice hadn't sounded even and reassuring.

Tsukishima had gotten him to the hospital and Yamaguchi tiredly clung to him, shaking his head when he couldn't move his legs or feel the poking and prodding.

He had to get his back scanned, which was painful and a struggle.

"Did you find out what happened? Is everything okay?"

"Well, he seems to be okay with his brain functions. There is an issue with his spinal cord though, which is why it's making it difficult for him to walk. It seems like what's happening right now is because of an injury to the spinal cord. It might have been caused by quickly plopping down or something similar for you."

Yamaguchi cast his eyes down. The kitchen incident. He hadn't meant to stand and ended up plopping into his chair. It had hurt so bad and he hadn't said anything.

"This seems like a mix of Anterior cord syndrome and Brown-sequard syndrome. This is basically a struggle with movement and limited sensations in the targeted area, which is your legs. You also were able to feel the right side more which is the Brown-Sequard syndrome."

Yamaguchi nodded slowly. He gulped, grabbing his phone. He typed a question, shaking.

"Will I be able to walk again?"

The doctor paused. "You will need a lot of assistance. Your wheelchair will be used a lot because it will cause pain to walk."

Yamaguchi's eyes began to water. Tsukishima looked over and took his hand, squeezing it tight. He leaned over to him, rubbing his back.

"I'll give you two a moment."

Tsukishima kissed his forehead, calming his tears. "Look, we're going to figure this out. It's going to be okay."

"B-but… B-baby. And… And wed… Wedding."

"You will need assistance. And, I'll be able to drop one of my jobs soon. I'll be around more. I can help with the baby."

Yamaguchi nodded, sniffling. He gave him a watery smile. "A-a baby."

Tsukishima smiled. "It's okay."

Yamaguchi pecked his lips. He wiped away his tears and looked at his wheelchair. He'd need a new one soon. This one kind of sucked now that he used it for everything.

Later though.

Tsukishima rubbed his hair, keeping him calm.

When they got home Yamaguchi took a shower, sitting in the little shower chair Tsukishima had gotten him.

Tsukishima had walked in during it, seeing Yamaguchi putting his head back, hands over his eyes and facing the water. He let him be and threw blankets and two towels in the dryer downstairs in the public washer and dryers.

He wrapped Yamaguchi up in the towels and then warm clothes and blankets. He ate dinner, which was some cool cheap full dinner that only needed hot water and thirty minutes to cook.

Both of them ate and cuddled in their little room. Yamaguchi fell asleep in the middle of reaching for the remote, laying over Tsukishima. "Damn Tadashi…"

Tsukishima turned towards him, tangling together. Yamaguchi woke up a bit and grabbed his thigh, throwing himself over Tsukishima. He mumbled nonsense for a moment, giggling in between.

"Shhhh, shhhh." Tsukishima rubbed the base of his head, calming him down. "We'll talk a lot in the morning. Just relax."

Yamaguchi rubbed his head against Tsukishima's chest before humming. He was back asleep fully and very comfortable so neither one of them minded. Tsukishima fell asleep hours later, thinking too much to sleep.
