It is perhaps the most curious tale that I came across during my time with the banshees is that of the banshee who they knew as the Howling Angel, but chose the name Io. Although most banshees exhibit no signs of family or friend attachment towards one another, I was told that Io was different. She felt the same emotional attachments as any human would experience, and this is why she chose to leave her banshee brethren and live among humans, with whom she felt that she would feel as though she fit in better. It was during her time among the humans that she developed a close bond with a young wizard named Euan.

The wizards in the local area also have a version of events that fits with the banshee's tale, and by them, I discovered that Euan was a young man of great magical skill. He was the fourth son of a family of seven and was regarded well within the local community of the time.

The wizards tell me that Euan came across Io on a night with no moon in the darkest part of the forest. Io was in distress as she was under attack by several creatures, of which species I know not. Euan performed some magic in order to save Io, and then took her home so that he could tend to her wounds.

In the time that Io was healing from these wounds, both Euan and Io grew close to one another. The banshees told me with quiet disdain that the pair fell in love whereas the wizarding folk-law explains the pair as closer than siblings.

The banshees tell me that Io was in possession of the rare ability to astral project. In her astral form, she was invisible to all, but both versions of the tale say that there was one exception to this, Euan. Euan could see Io in her astral form, and many accounts describe Euan as being in tune to Io's emotions, in other words, Euan could sense Io's emotions.

I have come across no other instances of a bond forming between a wizard and a banshee, but there are also few accounts of a wizard and a banshee interacting, as they are notoriously secretive. It is my honest belief that Euan and Io became part of one another, Euan could sense Io's emotions and see her in astral form in order to protect her from wizardkind who may do her harm. I believe that a bond of this sort will occur any time that a banshee lives among wizards for an extended period. 

The wizarding recipient may be random or predestined, I am not one to say. Perhaps the spirits of Euan and Io will be reincarnated and the tale will reoccur in several hundred years. But it seems to me that Io is unique among banshees and Euan is unique among wizards.

The bond that was supposed to protect them did nothing to save Euan, as the tale goes that he was brutally murdered as he tried to protect Io from other wizards, who wanted to find out if a banshee could do them harm if she were mute. The Wizards cut out Io's vocal cords, and carried off Euan's body, telling the townsfolk that it was Io who killed him.

Defenceless and alone Io returned to the banshees and died promptly after she returned. The banshees say that her death was because of heartbreak.

This tale is one that the banshee teachers tell their young to discourage them from mingling with wizardkind. But I believe that there is another message to be taken away from it, I believe that from this tale we can learn more about the reclusive banshees, and what may happen if they choose to live among wizards.

In memory of Euan and Io, I have named the wizard who forms this relationship with a banshee Guardian, to honour Euan, who defended Io with his dying breath.
