Protector

Rose's world was only so big. The wolves led her into the cave that she had once called home. Nathan spun around, observing the place. If the wolves were to attack him he needed a way out. He had a feeling that Rose wouldn't care if they ripped him into shreds. Lost in thought, he didn't realize when Rose sat down next to him, touching his leg. He moved over so that they weren't touching. Rose noticed and frowned. "You're not comfortable."

"No, I suppose I'm not. I'm hiding in a cave in another world. There are wolves surrounding us and they might just attack us."

Rose laughed, a tinkling sound that no one would expect from a werewolf. "They won't attack you; like I said, they're like my family." She paused for a second, "They are my family." Seeing Nathan's startled face she smiled and said softly, "Please try to trust them."

Nathan nodded, but he had no idea how he would make that happen. He startled back when Rose moved into the pack of wolves and disappeared. Her voice came from inside the haggle of wolves, "Don't be too startled when I come out." Nathan waited and choked back a scream when Rose emerged a wolf. He looked at her with fear, all the authoritative presence that he had in the arena gone. This girl was different. And he was scared of her.

Rose moved closer, ears twitching. She lept over Nathan as she chased a mouse. Catching it in her mouth, she trotted over to Nathan, dropping it at his feet. Nathan scooted back in disgust, trying to get away from the thing. Rose gave a soft growl of frustration and nudged it toward him. When he moved further away from it, she gave another growl and changed back. "Eat."

"But the thing is reeking of all things bad," Nathan protested.

"This is the only thing that we have. Eat that or go hungry; your choice. I wouldn't care what happened to you."

Nathan smiled. The tone of her voice indicated that she would very much care if something happened to him.

Rose's voice broke his thoughts. "Prepare it however you like, but don't set this place on fire. I'm going hunting." And with that she changed swiftly and shot out of the cave, her claws flashing. The wolves approached him. He sat back nervously, watching the wolves' every move. The wolves bared their teeth, pushing him against the wall. One snarled at him, a sound that almost sounded like the word, "Out." He harried out of the cave looking around for any sign of Rose. Instead, more sinister creatures approached him, forcing him onto the edge of the cliff. Then a roar. Rose he thought with relief, and collapsed with fear.

"Nathan? Nathan are you alright?" He opened his eyes slightly and was blessed with the sight of Rose in her human form. Seeing that he was awake, she kept on talking. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone. I've forgotten about the dangers of being a world that isn't yours."

Nathan sighed. "How convenient. Well, I suppose I should thank you for saving me."

Rose hung her head. "I didn't save you; I nearly killed you. Imagine, me of all people killing the Crown Prince of Thilaria. And your mother! She would be furious. I think it's safe to say that it's a miracle you're alive."

Nathan heaved and gasped. He started coughing heavily. Rose winced. "I was wondering when that part would come. Sorry, I had to drag you through the sand to get you back here."

"Back... where?" he choked out.

Rose ignored him, "The sand is enchanted and- oh I'm so sorry."

She handed him a cup of steaming hot liquid and tilted it into his mouth. The coughing lessened and Rose grinned. "Better?"

"Much."

As Nathan's coughing lightened, Rose was still grinning. "I made the antidote my self."

Nathan inclined his head in acknowledgement and asked again, "Where are we?"

Rose shifted uncomfortably. "We were in the cave. Then you ran out of it. And you fell off the cliff before I got to you." Nathan's eyes widened at this, but he stayed quiet, waiting for her to continue. "And now we're under the mountain. I don't know how to get out, but you landed here and by some miracle you didn't die."

"The wolves?" Rose looked up in surprise. "They aren't my babysitters! Its not like they follow me around! They just... keep an eye on me."

"So tell me, how did you get down here?"

"The same way you did." After a moment of thought she added, "But not as awkwardly as you did."

Nathan didn't even bother complaining and slipped into a deep sleep. Rose smiled and got up. She scaled the cliff then headed back into the kingdom of Thilaria.

"I demand a private audience with Queen Reena."

"About what?" the guard said, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the wolf girl.

"Regarding her son. The Crown Prince."

The guard nodded and allowed her in.

Queen Reena smiled a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You've come to me about my son?"

"Yes. There's no easy way to say this, but I believe your son is dead."

"What did you do to him?" Queen Reena cried in panic. "He's the only son I've ever had!"

"Your Majesty, I was not the one that harmed your son. But I do know who did it."

"Oh please! We must have vengeance on the thing that killed my son." She directed her gaze to the nearest guard, "Send a search party to find my dear, dear son." The guard nodded and hurried out, his expression worried. "Thank you girl for informing me. I'll give you anything as a reward if this information is true."

A malicious smile took over her mouth, "I hope this isn't asking too much of you, but I want the throne."

Queen Reena gasped, "Girl, I-"

"You said anything," Rose said, a scheming expression on her face.

The Queen looked away and said, "You'll have to earn it."

Rose growled, trying to keep herself from changing. Finally, she gave in, a ferocious growl on her face. The Queen backed away in horror. "Please, don't hurt me."

Rose responded by pouncing on her, snatching the crown and racing out of the room, making sure that it was secure. As she left, the Queen lay in horror on the ground.
