You woke up alone on the Skelebro's couch. Not only were you scared because everyone was gone, but also everything around you was different than when you were last aware so it took a moment to process what was happening. An alluring smell lifted you on to your legs and into the kitchen.

As you entered, Frisk sat eagerly at the table while Papyrus stood at the stove in a hot pink apron that said 'kiss the skeleton.'

"Mornin'." I greeted.

Papyrus nodded towards you and Frisk smiled. "Where's G!Sans?" You asked.

"He often leaves for the lab before dawn. I swear he's nocturnal."

You raised a brow. "He was with me last night. I was using him as a pillow."

"Where?"

You shrugged. "Probably the couch. Frisk wasn't there. Was he in your bed, Papyrus?"

Papyrus shook his head. "I was in Sans' room." Frisk piped up.

You grinned. "Good."

Papyrus turned and placed a sizzling strip of bacon on a plate. (If you don't eat meat just choose your favorite sizzling breakfast item.) You snatched it, still burning slightly, and nibbled on it.

"Wow Papyrus, you're good in the kitchen." You praised. "My Papyrus can only make inedible spaghetti a lot of the time."

He chuckled. "So dad tells me. I bet I used to be an odd skeleton."

"Phst! You take 'odd' to a whole other level."

He chuckled hardily. "I guess so."

He emptied the rest of the skillet on to a kiss on the table and stepped away to take off his apron. Frisk was already plating his food by the time you sat down. You took a few spoonfuls of all the choices, double of the bacon. As you pigged out, Papyrus and Frisk held a steady conversation.

It wasn't until you finished your last bite that either one addressed you. You had just swallowed the last mouthful when G!Paps cleared his throat.

"What's up?" You asked.

He smiled happily and gestured towards Frisk. "I wanted to discuss living arrangements with you."

You nodded. "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I have a lot of gold on my card so I can probably rent a place. But I'll have to get a job somewhere so I can get grocery income. That and caring for Frisk. I was thinking I'd probably find a place in-"

"Actually (Y/N), Sans and I were talking and we had an idea." G!Paps said.

You raised a brow. "What cha got bones?"

He rolled his eyes and continued. "While you and Frisk slept last night, Sans and I discussed where it would be best for you and Frisk, but still be close by for monitoring."

You shrugged. "Well Waterfalls are reasonably close I guess, but did you already know of a place?"

He chuckled. "You're slow when you've just woken up."

Frisk rolled his eyes and scooted closer to you. "Papy and Sans want us to move in." He said with a broad smile.

Your heart was torn between delight and bitterness. "Paps, that's amazingly nice, but I couldn't! There's only enough room for a little over tow people and you guys have it. Maybe Frisk could stay here but definitely not me. I couldn't possibly impose such an inconvenience."

G!Paps laughed. "It's no problem at all really. There already a joint room off of mine. You and Frisk could sleep there and I'd live in the shed. It's insulted and has electricity." You shook your head.

"Paps, it's your home. If it's my only option, kid stays in here. You sleep in your room and I'll take couch or shed. Maybe the inn."

Paps shook his head.

"Please let me (Y/N)." He asked. "You're guests here and I can't have you sleeping so wrongly."

You waved his statement away dismissively. "Shut up Paps. If we're gonna settle in Snowdin, I'm not using your room. End of discussion."

He sighed and Frisk pouted. "You're stubborn." Frisk said gruffly.

You snickered and shoved him playfully. "I know, it's one of my best qualities."

You stood up and stretched. "Welp, if I'm staying here I'll have to go check out the shed. Did you ever fix the lock on it?"

"What about the lock?"

"Does it lock on the inside still?"

He shook his head. "I fixed the door a long time ago. It should work fine now. But (Y/N), I really do think-"

"Too late. I'm already planning it in my head." You chirped.

You skipped from the room in a childish manner making both G!Paps and Frisk laughing at your weird walk. Passing G!Sans on the way out, you continued skipping until you swung the door open and jumped into the snow.

"Where are you going beautiful?" He asked.

"Don't know yet! That's half the fun!" You chimed and slammed the door behind you.

Monsters looked at you oddly as you buzzed about Snowdin examining it throughly. Your first stop was the shop next to the in. You didn't purchase a Cinnabun but you did look at clothing options. You had a good amount of gold for withdrawal on your card, so you took out a good chunk and scanned the racks of clothing available.

When you left, you were down a decent amount of gold, but your arms were full with clothes that actually belonged to you. You threw them in a black messenger bag and hopped on the river guide's boat.

"To Hotlands please!"

They nodded and you were off. You hummed and checked your phone on the ride to Hotlands. You hopped off and flipped a few coins to the guide, heading to the lab. You flashed you access card and the lab let you in.

"Alphys!" You called into the lab. "Alphys where are you?"

"(Y/N)?" She stuttered, appearing from behind a cluttered desk.

"O-Oh! Hi (Y/N)! We haven't officially met h-have we? I'm Alphys."

You snickered. "I know. You already know my name but I'll say it anyway, I'm (Y/N)."

"W-Well it's nice to finally meet you...
Without you almost dying."'

You chuckled. "Past is the past. I just came here for an update on your experiments."

She raised a brow. "Which ones?" She asked.

"Artificial soul." You supplied and she made an 'oh' face.

"Yes yes, follow me." She grinned.

You followed her quietly into the underground lab, petting the puppy puddle on the way down, and towards her high caution experiments. Alphys led you towards the work station and your heart immediately dropped.

"Oh god, what is this mess?!" You gasped.

Test tubes of different substance were laid randomly, closed and open. Notes were every where and only in chunk. The only soul there was wavering so much it was like looking into a river.

"Alphys what happened here?! It's like a tornado flew through!"

She laughed sheepishly. "T-This is mainly Sans project. I w-work with the other ones."

You sighed and sat. "Well, I know what I'm doing today."

She raised a brow before realizing what you meant. "Oh (Y/N), that's not a good idea! Sans doesn't like it when-"

"I don't care Alphys. His workspace is a mess and your model isn't even close to stable! I'm gonna clean this up and stabilize the soul type."

"But (Y/n)-"

"No buts! I'm going to fix this."

You dove into the work whole heartedly. Retrieving vial stands from the storage, you labeled and alphabetized the test tubes both empty and in use. You sorted though the notes and put them into piles based on their topic, making sections even further into that by putting each pile in chronological order.

As you swept the area clean, your eyes narrowed in on the desk. Small doodled littered the smooth plan desk, all in silver or blue sharpie. Gaster Basters shot down enemies and small picture frames slowly emerged around them.

You lifted one and cried out with an elongated "aaahahhhaaaaahhhh." In the image, Gaster, while he was stable, knelt down between his two sons. Papyrus was barely 3 in the photo and Sans was 5 or 6.

They all grinned happily at the camera. Seeing the two brother skeletons without Gaster's cracks seemed to comfort you. You hugged the picture and placed it back on the desk. The clutter seemed to disappear quickly. Notes were placed orderly, tubes in their place, pictures in safe places around the desk. There were several pictures of Sans at a young age. You take a few pictures to show to your Sans. You favorite was one when Papyrus had dressed Sans in a Bow Peep outfit for a play he had written.

With the desk cleared, you dragged over a stool and hopped on. Carefully you moved the artificial soul they had in front of you. You were disappointed looking at the object. It was a sickly color of green and drooped like a melting wax figure. You removed it from the case, using your own soul to support it.

Your soul swirled around it like they were dancing. The motion had always comforted you. Seeing the two dance so gently and gracefully reminded you so much of your fantasies you had back on the surface. It differed so much from the treatment you faced on the surface.

There was a tap on your shoulder and you whipped around, grabbing their wrist.

"AH! (Y/N)?!"

You looked at Alphys and flushed. "Oh! Alphys, I'm so sorry. You, uh, startled me." You stuttered, bowing your head in apology.

"I-It's fine (Y/N)." She replied quickly. "I should have gone about it differently."

There was an awkward pause.
"Um, (Y/N)?"

"Yes Alphys?" You answered sheepishly.

"I wanted to ask about what you're doing with the prototype."

You looked back and made an 'oh' face.

"I forget you haven't worked with me." You chuckled quietly. "This is one of my own abilities. For example, Frisk can reset timelines in the Underworld. Some humans can use their souls in certain ways when in environments with monsters as a sort of defense mechanism."

Alphys nodded. "W-What is your ability?" She asked.

Moving the souls to your palm, you showed them to Alphys.

"I have the ability to support other souls." You explained. "To an amount, I produce more HP than I need. That's also why I healed so quickly. I can direct that excess HP to support damaged or malformed souls. Back home, I use it to keep the artificial soul stable while I experiment with additives."

"Wow (Y/N)! You could use your soul to help a lot of people."

You couldn't use it to help him.

A quiet growl escaped your throat when Chara spoke, but you faked a smile.

"Yeah, it could. But I decided that making an stable artificial soul could help people a lot more." You said.

Alphys grinned. "Yeah maybe, it's hard to recover a dying soul. I guess replacing it with a new one would be better."

Alphys turned and left to attend to her other experiments. You turned back to the notes and peered at what Sans had. He was actually relatively close to your progress, but he wasn't acting on the prototype so his notes only remained theories.

You looked at the soul sadly and fed it a bit more HP than you did the one back home. It sapped up the HP like a starving puppy and you felt happy, though a little more drained. You collected a few vials and a some dishes, mixing together solutions that would strengthen the soul.

By the time you had a successful additive made, the soul was already looking better with your help. You used a pipette to suck up the solution and positioned it over the soul and carefully applied one drop.

A ripple ripped through both the prototype and your soul, filling you with chills. Another drop and the soul was starting to resembling a healthy shape. You started to shake visibly. This had always been your least favorite part of working with the soul. You felt everything your soul supported, so when the soul was reconstructing it, you felt it.

Third drop.
Fourth drop.
Seventh drop.
Twelfth drop.

You were shaking almost too much to drop it on to the prototype. Your free hand clutched so tightly in a fist that you nails broke flesh. The pipette was empty and the prototype was supporting its own shape. Smiling, you put down the pipette and placed the soul back into its case. Your own soul retreated into you like a frightened child would to their mother.

You sat shaking violently for a long time. Chara's voice whispered in your head but your mind was numb with the rippling feelings of pain the prototype faced. Vaguely you heard the door creaking open but you ignored it. You were too tired to speak anyways.

A boney hand grabbed you harshly but you didn't react. He spoke into your ear, only a few words making there way to understanding.

"......... okay..... up..... Al........ kid......... room....."

You grunted and patted the monster lightly. "I'm fine." You muttered quietly. "Experiment's hurt."

You opened your eyes and squinted at the monster, but they were too backlit to recognize. A sharp cackle ripped split your skill and the silhouette started changing. It became a large man with slumped yet broad shoulder. There head became longer and fatter and your heart stopped. You shoved away from the man, falling to the ground and out of the stool.

You bottom hit the ground hard but you still inched back. "Go away! I left you behind!" You screamed, your back soon hitting the wall.

The man neared you, speaking gently but changing once the sound hit your ears. "You ungrateful brat! You caused this. You killed him. You deserve the Underground. You're the only REAL monster!"

"Shut up! You're not real! You're not! You're not! You're dead! Leave me alone!" You cried.

Your hands hid your sight from the man, but his image lived on within your eyelids. A scream rang out from your throat and two hands grabbed your wrist.

"No!"

"(Y/N)!" The voice was clear and different.

Something clicked in your mind and your face fell. A sharp breath escaped your lips and you removed your hands from your face with the help of the newcomer. Your wild eyes looked back at the silhouette and you relaxed. The man of your nightmares was gone replaced by a clear image of your new friend.

His left eye was lit in a golden blaze but his expression was soft. "Sans..." You said softly before launching at him.

You wrapped your arms around his neck. He hesitated but soon wrapped his arms around you as well.

"Hey kid..."

You cried silently like every time tears fell from your eyes. Sleep tugged at you as G!Sans muttered into your ear. It still felt like something was scratching at your skull from within, but it seemed dull in the comforting hug. Your eyes closed gently and you could tell when your body went limp.

"Goodnight dove..."
