Chapter 3

They both woke up the next morning–Saturday–at around the same time. Together, they cleaned up the spilled popcorn and fallen blankets from the night before.

"Did you like Willow?" Jade asked, shaking out a pillowcase.

"Yeah," Violet admitted. "Airk's kind of an idiot, though."

"Kind of an idiot?!" Jade laughed. "He's the biggest idiot!" She grinned. "DON'T DRINK THE WYRM JUICE!"

Violet laughed so hard she tripped over her own feet, which made Jade laugh at her, and soon they were both struggling to stop laughing.

"Alright," Jessie announced, coming downstairs. "Jade, if you're not out of here by ten–"

Still giggling, Violet and Jade got up and slowly put the living room back together.

Jade, in typical Jade fashion, gave Violet a hug goodbye and slipped out the door at 9:59, just shy of Jessie's deadline. Violet watched her scamper down the path, grinning.

"You two are really good friends, huh?" Nicky asked. "Maybe...a little more than friends?"

"Nicky!" Violet protested, blushing.

"Oh, you know what I mean," Nicky laughed. "I see the way you look at her."

Violet rolled her eyes. Nicky sighed. "Carol! Can I ask you a question?"

Carol poked her head into the room. "Yeah?"

"Do you think Violet and Jade like each other?"

Carol tilted her head. "Uh...yes?"

Violet turned back to Nicky. "Really?"

Nicky sighed. "Vi, we're not blind. We all see the way you look at her, and the way you two are always laughing when you're around each other. And the way you bring her what she needs before she asks for it. You can practically read her mind! C'mon, Vi, admit it. You like Jade."

"Wait, who does Violet have a crush on?" Jessie demanded. "Is it that boy in your class? Maxwell?"

"Uh..." Violet said. "There's...nobody named Maxwell in my class."

"Michael?" Jessie tried. "Max? Morris? You know the kid I mean. The redhead?"

"What?" Violet asked. "You mean Aidan?"

"Right, him," Jessie said. "I don't want you dating him. I don't like his face."

"It's not Aidan!" Violet interrupted. "Nobody's talking about Aidan, alright?"

"It's Jade, Jess," Nicky said. "Vi has a crush on Jade."

"Oh," Jessie said."That makes sense. You're almost less shy around her than you are around us. I don't think I've ever seen you that bold around anyone before."

Violet flushed as she realized that what they were saying was true. Jade was, well, she was Jade. And Violet did feel different, in some way, around Jade. It was like Jade would just always be there for her. It was comforting to know that Jade was there. And Jessie was right. Violet had never felt so secure around anyone, except for her family.

She just stood there for a moment. Then, frantic, she turned to Jessie. "What do I do?!"

Jessie looked surprised. "How should I know?"

"Because you're the only non-three-year-old in this family with a functioning relationship!" Violet pointed out.

"Alright," Jessie said. "That's true."

"Yes, I know!" Violet said. "Just tell me what to do!"

She turned to Nicky, tears brimming in her eyes. "Please Nicky, I can't tell her! But I don't know what else to do!"

Nicky looked helpless and shrugged. "Listen, Vi, I don't know. There's nothing wrong with having a crush on her. Nothing at all!"

"No, there is! She's my best friend," Violet said, losing her anger and tears streaming down her face. "I won't be able to talk around her now! And she won't know what's wrong, and she'll be mad, and I couldn't tell her what's wrong, and... and..." Violet trailed off, completely panicking.

"Violet, chill," Jessie said, trying to sooth her. "It's alright. Don't sweat it."

It'll be fine," Nicky added. "You'll see. It's not the end of the world."

"But... but... what if it is?" Violet asked, panic rising again. "What if I do tell her how I feel, and then she's so disgusted that she doesn't want to be my friend anymore? What if..."

"Vi, if Jade doesn't feel the same way you do, I'm at least sure she won't be disgusted with you," Jessie assured her. "Besides, stop thinking of all the what-ifs."

Violet silently kept fretting, but stopped voicing her concerns.

"Okay," Jessie said. "Why don't I go make breakfast?"

Violet nodded silently as she followed Jessie into the kitchen.
