Chapter 4
I started at the back of Mr Lawson as he led me out of the police station and towards his red Ferrari. Rhys was following behind me, apparently as baffled at this development as I was.
The other two policemen that were in the conference room had excused themselves when it appeared that they were no longer needed.
Mr Lawson retrieved something from his car that I wish I owned before inviting us to the other end of the car park with a friendly wave of his hand.
I was getting suspicious as I looked directly into his red eyes, trying to figure out his motives for this bizarre choice of destinations.
It took me a full three seconds before I realized what was wrong with that image and felt my eyes snap back to look at his. But they were definitely dark brown. "Great," I said to myself "Now I'm starting to see things."
"Sorry for the detour." Mr Lawson announced as we get to the other end of the small, brightly lit car park.
"Here you go." He says as he gently tosses me something.
I catch the flying object to find that it's a set of keys before saying "You've got to be kidding me. No way."
I am so excited and I don't even know if these keys belong to a car or what they're for.
"Are you seriously giving me a car?" I asked as I looked around.
Disappointment started to form in my stomach as I realised that none of the cars present could possibly be for me. There were a few police cruisers and three cars I reconsigned as belonging to police officers already.
The only car there that I didn't recognise the owner of was a black, brand new Audi R8 coupé.
Mr Lawson smile at me before answering my question. "Why don't you press the unlock button and find out."
So I pressed the unlock button and felt my heart skip but one, but two beats as the brand new Audi flash it's lights and unlocked.
The grin plastered on my face nearly split my face in two. As I turned to Rhys I noticed that he was in so much shock that he was unable to say anything.
Good thing I got my license two months ago.
"I am very shameful of my actions, you wouldn't have been alone and vulnerable if you had a vehicle to get to and from places. This is one small way that I can make sure that doesn't happen again."
"This car is stupidly expensive, are you sure it's ok to be giving it to me?" I asked Mr Lawson.
"Of course it is." He replied. "One of the perks of being born out of the virus is the stupid amount of money that comes with it."
I turned to Rhys and accused him. "So why is it you're so poor?"
Rhys looked uncomfortable for a second then just laughed. "Because I am" came the dismissive reply.
"Well if you need anything else then please don't hesitate to call me." Mr Lawson said as he gave me his business card. "The paper work for the Audi has already been done. It's officially your car now."
With that he wished us both a good day and went back to his Ferrari. Tearing out of the police station at break neck speed. Obviously not caring that every officer in the station was watching him.
While rubbing my hands together in gluttonous glee with a smile, I turned to Rhys "I guess I don't need a ride home anymore..." and then erupted into maniacal laughter.
"Jesus take the wheel seems the most appropriate statement right now" sighed Rhys.
"Just be careful." He replied. "That car has a lot more power than anything you've driven before. Including the police cruiser I let you drive briefly."
"I know." I said, grinning ear to ear.
Rhys surrendered "I'll see you at home then. Don't worry, I'll call Rose and let her know what's happened here so she doesn't freak out when that monster of a car turns up in our driveway."
With that Rhys turned around and went back into the station. He was still on duty after all.
I got into the drivers seat of my new baby, inhaling the new car and rich leather smell.
I put my foot on the clutch and pressed the start/stop button as I listened to her roar into life. SO BEAUTIFUL.
Despite the impression I gave Rhys, I drove my baby slow and steadily. After all, she is too beautiful to crash on the first day I had her.
After finally realizing that I couldn't afford the petrol to simply cruise around aimlessly all night, I sighed and headed home. Tomorrow was going to be a big day with Leah, doing what girls do best. Shopping!
I pulled up to Leah's house at midday, after finally getting my long awaited sleep in.
I beeped the horn at her to let her know I was here. It's corny I know, but I couldn't help it. My baby is too beautiful not to show off.
Leah came out of her house and stopped in her tracks. I'd told her about what happened at the police station yesterday, but I don't think she fully believed me until she saw the Audi sitting in her driveway PURRING.
"Holy crap Vi!" She said looking around, obviously impressed. "I should get bitten by a vampire too! Come and bite me, mama wants an Audi too!"
"Maybe you should." I teased. "But don't forget that we're here today to get outfits for Jakes 19th birthday party, not to admire the car all day."
"Can't we do both?" Leah suggested.
I laughed as I switched my baby into gear and took off a lot faster than yesterday. I'd gotten used to how powerful she was by now and I wanted to show off.
We arrived at the shopping centre faster then we ever have before. Both of us whooping and giggling at the speed.
Once we were there both of us put our game faces on and spent the next few hours going from shop to shop trying everything on. I swear the word had spread that we were coming and the shop assistants tried to run from the sight of us.
After many hours of shopping Leah finally decided on a very short little black dress that doesn't leave much to the imagination. Which I'm sure is entirely for her boyfriend. While I settle on a white playsuit with a blue pattern on it and a wrap around that ties up at the back, Japanese style.
"I'm knackered." Leah stated. Once again showing her fondness for Australian slang.
"Well we have been here for almost four hours." I pointed out. "Why don't we go get something to eat at the food court before going home?"
Excitement dawned on Leah's face like she hadn't even though about food until now. "You're the best Vi, I love you. Someday you're going to make a wonderful wife." Leah teased.
I shifted uncomfortably. Leah knew about my lack of interest in love which made her want to tease me about it all the damn time. It's not my fault that I've never really found anyone attractive in that way, right?
After noting my reaction Leah sighed. "Seriously Violet, you should put some thought into finding yourself a partner. I really don't care if it's a guy or girl but I refuse to listen to you if you try and tell me that you're dating your car."
I snorted at her joke. All trace of my previously forming bad mood vanishing in an instant. For all of Leah's teasing and bad slang. She really was just worried about me.
"I'll take a serious think on it." I promised her before my stomach loudly announced that it was hungry.
We both looked at it and laughed before heading to stuff our faces like the beautiful maidens we weren't.
I dropped Leah back at her house as darkness was beginning to set in. I was already looking forward to the next time I would see my best friend, three whole days form now. We've already made plans to get ready together then head out to Jakes party at his massive property in the hills.
"Only three more days of work." I thought to myself as I arrived home and went to greet the only true love of my life, my bed. I ponder for a moment about how I could get my car in here too.
I tired to convince myself that the time would pass quickly to Friday and Jake's party as I drifted off to sleep.
The next three days most certainly did not pass quickly. In fact they passed so slowly it was like there was a god of time messing with the flow of it for kicks.
When Friday did finally manage to arrive I was ecstatic. A lot had happened over the past week and I was really looking forward to letting loose and having some fun.
I went around to Leah's house early to find that her short hair was now hot pink. Chuckling at the constantly reccurring change in her hair colour, we proceeded to get ready for Jake's party.
It took us hours and hours to get ready but at the end of all that preparation, we were two smoking hot bitches. Ready to go on the prowl for alcohol and fun.
I had left my car at home as I was planning on drinking tonight, so we caught a taxi for the 30 minute journey out of suburbia and into the hills where Jake lived.
