Chapter 21

I won the bet as two hours later, Gabe was dragged back through the front door by Rose. Gabe looked like she had been trying to fight Rose on this, but I already knew that was useless.

I held my hand out to Audrey as she reluctantly gave me my winnings.

"Gabe will be stay with us for a while." Rose informed everyone in a don't challenge me on this tone. I struggled to stop myself from laughing at how uncomfortable Gabe was.

"So do we have a new boarder?" Jamie asked, appearing from around the corner to the lounge room. It appeared he'd come to see what the commotion was about.

"We sure do." Rose answered. "I would never let anyone live like that, let alone a nice girl like this." She gestured to Gabe.

Gabe was looking at Jamie with an open mouth. "You're Jamie Lawson." She stated, even though it was quite obvious. "You're the vampire that works in law to help the wrongly accused."

This shocked me, I had no idea Jamie was a lawyer as well. I didn't think anyone else knew either judging by their expressions. I guess it explains the obscene amount of money Jamie seems to possess.

"Wow, someone's a fan." Jamie said with a playful smile on his face. "But yes, that's me. So what happened to make the lovely Rose drag you back here?"

Gabe was silent. I was guessing that Jamie was one of her heroes by her reaction to him and she didn't want to show weakness in front of him. So Rose answered for her again. I'm going to have to get her to stop doing that.

"She's basically living in nothing better than a cardboard box." Rose's voice full of a deep displeasure at the thought of anyone living that way.

Since this house was actually owned by Jamie, he had final say as to who could live here. Not that he was an asshole or even unfair, but I'd have trouble taking in a young person I'd just literally met.

"You're Gabriel Everleigh right? Daughter of Mallory and Frank Everleigh? Big sister to Timothy Everleigh?" Jamie suddenly asked. I must admit I was shocked that Jamie knew Gabe's parentage.

Gabe nodded, just as surprised as everyone else.

"I knew your parents before the accident, they were good people. I'm truly sorry about the way things ended up for you. I know that's not what your mum and dad wanted for you or your brother. You're both welcome to call this place home for as long as you like." Jamie said.

Gabe started crying, right there in the middle of everyone. I rushed to her side but not before Rose beat me to it. Together the two of us guided Gabe up the stairs and into the same room she stayed last night. The room that was now her own.

With this new development, all the Ethereals would have to be careful with the glow in our eyes, but that really wasn't any different from how we'd been living anyway. Who knew when someone was watching, it's better to be safe than sorry. Even in our own home.

Gabe spent the rest of her Saturday settling in. She didn't have a lot that she could bring from her old place. As it turns out she used to have quite an assortment of clothes and personal items, but robbery was common near where she used to live and it left her with with almost nothing.

On Sunday, Rose took Gabe somewhere for the afternoon. Neither of them would tell us where, but I was still glad that Gabe had opened up to my sister.

It gave me an opportunity to fill her room with all the clothes I didn't want or need. Leah and Audrey had the same idea as I did apparently. As I opened the door both of them where folding and putting different garments away in the storage of Gabe's room.

Gabe and Rose came back in the evening, still not telling anyone, except Rhys of course, where they'd been. But Rhys was just as tight lipped as his wife.

When Gabe saw that her room had been filled with stuff she got angry and demanded to know who did it. No one confessed of course. I was surprised when Gabe showed us a rather expensive pair of designer jeans as an example. Apparently Jamie had the same idea as the three of us.

Gabe may not be an Ethereal child, but it appears that she's already part of the family.

But for all of her complaining and attempting to refuse everything, I saw Gabe smile a couple of times during the course of the weekend. Not the forced smile she usually wears around Alex, but a real smile that made her eyes light up.

...

It was Monday morning and I groaned as my alarm rudely woke me up. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying university, but who in the hell thought that getting up at 6 am was such a good idea that it should be done everyday?

I added tracking this person down and murdering them to my bucket list.

Breakfast before uni proceeded as usual, except we now had the addition of Gabe.

Everyone had morning lectures on a Monday so it was the only day of the week where all five of us would get up together.

"You're not taking your car?" Gabe ask me bewildered.

"Nope, I already get too much attention at school with my hair and eyes. Could you imagine how bad it would get if I were to turn up in my expensive sports car. It'd be like having multiple Alex's chasing after me." I shuddered at the thought.

Gabe and Mia laughed at that. "Yup, even I'd want to run away from that." Mia confessed.

We all squeezed into Leah's Mazda 3 with Mia, Gabe and myself crammed into the back seat. Thankfully we didn't have far to go to get to the university because I was the piggy in the middle. Let me tell you, it was squishy.

We arrived without an issue and all went our separate ways. I headed to the English department, Leah and Audrey went to the Science building. Audrey was studying Biology while Leah was obsessed with Physics. Mia was doing a Graphic Arts course and apparently Gabe was on a scholarship for Musical Arts.

The day was going like any other had so far in our short life at university, until I got into our favorite vintage style cafe for lunch. It appeared that Alex and Gabe were having a fight in the middle of the cafe.

Actually, after looking at the situation for a second, it wasn't a fight at all. Alex was verbally ripping the shit out of Gabe who wasn't even trying to defend herself.

I probably moved faster than I should have to get in between those two. I needed to maintain my cover, but I couldn't help it. I was seeing a person attacking someone unwilling to defend themselves. The fact that it was Alex made me angrier.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" I growled at Alex. He took a step back, not only because he'd been so focused on Gabe that it must have looked like I popped out of nowhere, but also because he was shocked that such a growl could possibly come out of my mouth.

"It's none of your business, Violet." He snapped at me, not realizing that he was showing his true colours publicly. This was going to be so much fun.

"Really? You keep verbally assaulting my good friend and I will make sure the ugliest guy on the rugby team spanks you, in the middle of a lecture, for all to see." I enjoyed watching his face go red with anger under all that blond hair. He definitely didn't look like an angel now.

"I can handle myself, Violet." Gabe informed me from where she was standing behind me. She was being strong but one of the advantages of being an Ethereal is that I could hear the undertones of fear in her voice that a normal person couldn't.

I turned to look at her, my eyes finding hers "I know you can." I made sure she knew that I did believe her before I continued. "However, I've been wanting to rip this asshole to shreds because he won't stop harassing me. Please let me do this?" I hoped that by making it a question I could help Gabe save some face.

"Shut your mouth, Violet." Alex snapped. I had to put my emotions on a very tight leash or my eyes would blaze with anger at him, I'd forgotten my contacts today. "Next time I turn up Gabriel, I expect you to be there and ready."

"As I've told you already Alexander, I moved over the weekend and I'm pretty sure my old place is already full of squatters." Gabe tried to explain.

"Where in the world would you go? I look after your sick brother out of kindness, but I expect you to be there whenever I need you. Do you understand?!" He spat at Gabe. He actually physically spat at her. Well he spat at HER, but got ME because I was in the way and spitting is something that makes me see red. It's a disgusting, degrading thing to do to someone.

I was SEETHING mad, the one thing that stopped me from punching him hard enough to give him a good concussion was Audrey's hands firmly grabbing my arms.

Leah stepped around Audrey and myself to slap Alex full in his face. "WE took her in you pathetic asshole. That means she's part of OUR family now and if you have a problem with her then you'd better be prepared to deal with ALL of us."

Leah started to walk away before she turned around having thought of something more. "Oh, if you think that dealing with a few young adults is easy enough for someone with your connections than think again. The person that's officially taken Gabe in and is now protecting her is Jamie Lawson. I've sure you've heard of the multi millionaire lawyer before? He's also preparing a request to transfer Timothy to his care."

The three Ethereals present were all smirking at the look on Alex's face when he realized that things weren't going his way like they usually did.

The three Ethereals turned around at the same time, one of the perks of sharing the Ethereal bond is we all had somewhat of an empathetic connection to each other. I grabbed Gabe's hand and pulled her along with us and away from the jerk known as Alexander.
