Chapter 10

Two months have passed since I was forcibly brought to the hunters encampment. Since then I've kind of grown accustomed to my life here.

I get woken up every morning at 5 am by a bright eyed Mia and we used to go for a run first thing until I learnt how to use my super speed. Now Mia sulks because I can move at almost the speed of sound for short bursts and she's never able to beat me. She's a sore loser. Or I'm a terrible winner. I can't tell.

After breakfast we focus on technique training from a number of different martial arts. We then stop for lunch before spending the afternoon training me in how to use my vampire abilities. While I'm quite fast now, my strength is still lacking. Apparently my healing ability is automatically activated and requires nothing from me to work. Nice to know.

Even after two months, no one can be sure of what Leah is. Is she a drone, is she not? Same old question. She trains at the level of a normal human and exhibits none of the abilities of a drone. In fact if it weren't for the green, glowing ring in her eyes marking her as mine, which still feels weird to say, there wouldn't be anything to differentiate her from a normal human.

Although Audrey is training Leah, Audrey is starting to spend more and more time away from the encampment on her missions to find Jake, who is apparently not dead, and Jamie. This is much to the obvious displeasure of Leah. It would seem that the two of them have gotten close recently.

My relations with the other hunters has become good, after they realized that I really wasn't a threat to them. I also count Mia as a good friend now, but her boyfriend really needs to stop visiting her in the middle of the night. I don't want to listen to that. You think these hunters would have some high tech ear plugs for that kind of thing.

Rhys has made a full recovery and is now training with us daily. But he seems to be extremely uncomfortable around Audrey and Rupert.

The other major event that happened is I finally had the overwhelming urge to drink human blood two weeks ago. But when it happened I still had no interest in the blood packs or even the people around me. Leah seemed to sense my need and made eye contact. I automatically approached her. Sensing that I was in need of blood, she relinquished herself to me in a familial way.

The funny thing is, it wasn't painful for either of us and Leah's wounds closed up immediately. She had a very healthy hue to her face. It was almost like the bond between us got stronger because of the feeding.

Rupert theorized that I can only feed from my 'drones'. Which I agree, seems to be the case even though I still dislike the term.

All in all, I'm quite happy with my life in the encampment. Even though it had a very rocky start.

I'm heading down to the garage with Leah today. After two months of inspecting my Audi for tracker chips or anything that could harm me, I'm finally getting my baby back. Apparently she's as clean as a whistle, even the standard GPS tracker that all high end Audi's are meant to have had been removed before I got it.

Needless to say, I'm VERY excited.

"How's she going Bob?" I ask the head mechanic as I waltzed into the auto shop, noticing that my baby looked so out of place surround by the trucks and armored people carriers.

"She's an amazing piece of engineering." Bob replied. "Whoever got this car for you has had it customized and modified so it can go even faster. She can easily outrun anything chasing you."

I got along well with Bob. His love for vehicles and their inner workings was evident whenever you spoke to him.

"Just make sure you don't take her out to go hooning." Bob told me as he threw me the keys. "Besides the fact that she will draw a lot of attention coming in and out of here all the time, I don't think we'll be able to keep up with the fuel costs."

I laughed at that. But at least I had my pride and joy back.

Leah grabbed my arm and gave it a gentle pull. She's eager to get back and spend time with Audrey before she leaves on her next mission for a few days.

I thank all the staff and we head back to the dorms, arms linked. It's so nice being able to walk around without an escort now.

We get back to the room that Leah shares with Audrey and Leah disentangles herself from me and immediately heads over to Audrey. I've had my suspicions regarding those two for a while now, but it's not my place to say anything. As long as Audrey doesn't hurt her, because she knows what i'm capable of. If this was a movie I'd insert a tiny evil smirk right there.

Mia and Rose are also in the room so I headed over to them, mainly to let the two probable love birds have some privacy.

"Jake has been spotted near where you used to live." Mia was telling Rose as I approached. "Somehow he's managed to get his jaw reattached, but he kinda looks like one of  Frankenstein's monsters with all the scars."

Mia and Rose turned to greet me as I got to them. "So how's the one true love of your life?" Rose asked.

"Beautiful," I replied. "She roars like a lion and I swear I'm going to marry her one day." The grin on my face becoming massive enough to split my head in two.

Our short conversation was interrupted by Audrey as she came over to us and started talking.

"I'll be gone for three days and I'm taking three others with me." Audrey informed us matter of factly before turning to me. "So make sure you take care of Leah for me while I'm gone."

"When have I ever not taken care of her, I'm not some gun wielding psychopath." I shot back. Sometimes I wonder if I was ever going to allow the animosity between Audrey and I to fade. However, we seem to have a growing professional respect for each other.

Surprisingly, Audrey had no comeback. She just nodded at me apparently satisfied and gave everyone in the room a quick hug before heading out the door to her mission to capture and hopefully torture that absolute piece of shit asshole, Jake.

...

It has been five days since Audrey left on her mission and it's already becoming difficult to comfort Leah about the fact that she hasn't returned yet. The higher ups have told us that it's normal for missions to take longer then predicted and to sit tight.

On the sixth day since their departure. All communication between the hunters camp and Audrey's team went dead.

A small group was dispatched to check up on them and found the other three members of Audrey's group slaughtered and drained of blood. Audrey herself was nowhere to be found.

Leah was beside herself with grief and worry. All I could do was be there for her to offer her comfort and eat chocolate with her.

This would have continued if not for on the seventh day, Leah and I were summoned by Rupert Mayweather to the courtroom.

As we approached the circular building in the middle of the encampment  I was already trying to prepare a defense of how we had nothing to do with Audrey's disappearance. Expecting to be put on trial for it.

What I was not expecting, was to enter the room to find a table in the middle of the floor and five people dressed in battle gear as well as Rupert pouring over the maps on it.

"Ah, there you are. Come take a look at this." Rupert invited us when he saw that we'd entered the room.

On the table was all the information relating to Audrey's disappearance.

"We believe that Audrey has been taken to the drones hideout to extract information from her." Rupert began, sounding like he was near tears. "That means that the only way to get her back is to infiltrate the place. While we know where it is, we've never had the ability to get inside  before with our man power. So I ask the two of you. No, I beg of you as a father. Please help us get Audrey back."

Now Audrey and I definitely don't always get along, but the thought of anyone torturing one of my friends set my blood on fire. "Don't worry Mr. Mayweather." I replied. "If we can't sneak Audrey out of there then I will murder the lot of them."

"You'll need to beat me to it." Leah said, in an almost growl. She was obviously here to be part of the mission.

Rupert and the five guys that had offered to go on what was essentially a suicide mission before we joined, had grateful looks on their faces as they heard our answer.

"Well it's 11 pm now." Rupert said. "Be prepared to leave at 6 am. Violet will travel with Leah, in her Audi while the rest of you take a cruiser. Remember, the point of this mission is to recover Audrey, mass murdering sprees come second to that." He looked at me as he said the last part. I couldn't help but smile at him my blood still boiling. Itching to hurt the people who dared lay a hand on our friend.

"We'll see you at 6 am." I said as I grabbed Leah and left the room. We went back to Leah's room and I spend the night with her to make sure she actually got some sleep.

By morning I was quite excited. I was excited to get out of the encampment for the first time in ages, to take revenge for my friends that lost their lives and most of all, I was excited to get Audrey back, preferably unharmed.
