Chapter 5
Sabrina was in her new bar setting everything up before its Grand Opening. She had replicated 22 other Sabrina's so they could get work done as she read Vanya's book. Called Extra Ordinary, I am Number 8 by Vanya Hargreeves. She read all about Vanya exposing the family secrets and everything.
'My name is Vanya Hargreeves, and this is my story. We were never a real family. We were our father's creation, family in name...but not in fact. In the end, after our brother Ben had died, there was really nothing connecting us. We were just strangers living under the same roof...destined to be alone...starved for attention...damaged by our upbringing...and haunted by what might have been. We all wanted to be loved by a man incapable of giving love. Our father never missed an opportunity to remind me that I was ordinary. A hard thing for a little girl to hear. If you're raised to believe nothing about you is special if the benchmark is extraordinary, what do you do if you're not?"
Today
The next morning Sabrina woke on her chair, she rubbed her eyes and looked at her bed. Five was fast asleep, tear face stained. Five fell asleep crying, so she just put him under the covers in her bed. She stood up and stumbled to the bathroom. Minutes later she came back to find Five gone.
"Sabrina," a voice said startling her, she glanced behind her, into Five's room to see him sewing his bloody arm.
"What happened?" Sabrina asked as she walked into his room.
"Got caught up in some trouble," Five answered. " No biggie."
"I'm not even going to argue" Sabrina grunted as she turned around.
" Meet me down by the dumpster," Five requested. " We are not done with this mission." Sabrina did as Five requested, she got down to see Five waiting for her with a bag and Klaus standing in the dumpster eating a half-eaten bagel.
"What are you doing brain fart?" Sabrina asked as she raised an eyebrow, and crossed her arms.
"Five says he doesn't need any more of my company today," Klaus informed.
"So it intrigued you to climb into your room?" Sabrina asked.
"Haha," Klaus said sarcastically, he glanced behind him. " Just shut up." Five and Sabrina both glanced at him.
"I'm done funding your drug habit," Five told him.
" Come no." Klaus began. " Maybe I just wanna hang out with my brother and sister." Sabrina and Five saw a 24 Hour emergency service plumbing service van empty, the driver had just walked away. " Mi hermana! Mi hermono! I love you! Even if you can't love yourself!" They quickly got in the car and drove off. Once they got in, they parked outside the MeriTech place.
"I thought we already hit a dead end here," Sabrina recalled.
"Not quite yet," Five answered as they spied on doctor Lance, he was holding a cartoon of coffees. He then turned around and glanced at his bag. " Oh shit." He opened the bag revealing a mannequin. " Meet Delores."
"Hello, Delores," Sabrina greeted, her brother had gone quite mad with all that alone time. He created a romance with a mannequin.
" Sorry you were in there for so long, Delores," Five apologized as he sat up the doll. He then glanced at Sabrina. " No need to worry, that is just my sister Sabrina." He then rolled his eyes. " No, I'm not drunk. I'm working." He then glanced out and back at Delores. " Yes, it's about the eye thing. This is the place it was made. Or...Will be made. We just have to wait. After hours of waiting, Sabrina snuck past Delores and sat in the back of the van. She looked at her phone, reading through texts from workers, and looking up new alcohol recipes. Soon Klaus entered the back and he started to dance around with Delores.
" No!" Five yelled. Sabrina looked up to see him in sort of a trance.
"Five," Luther said in a muffled voice, Sabrina glanced at the window to see Luther. " Five! Hey, Five!"
"No!" Five yelled out.
"Five?" Sabrina asked. He snapped out of his trance, looked back at Sabrina and then at Luther who stood at the window. He then opened the door, he started to have trouble getting into the car.
" What are you..." Luther muttered. " Oh my god." After struggling he got he finally managed close the door. He looked back and saw Sabrina, he then looked at Five. " You okay?"
"You shouldn't be..."Five trailed. " How did you find us?"
"Um," Luther breathed as they looked back.
" Hey, baby," Klaus sang. " Hey, a little privacy, guys. We're really hitting it off back here. Five threw a can at Klaus causing him to scream.
"Get out! You can't be here!" Five ordered fiercely. " We're in the middle of something. " Both Sabrina and Klaus got close to the front.
'"Any luck finding your one-eyed man?" Klaus asked.
"No," Sabrina answered.
" What he's talking about?" Luther answered.
" Does it matter?" Five asked. " It's Klaus."
" What is it, Luther?" Sabrina asked as Five sighed.
" Um...So, Grace may have had something to do with Dad's death," Luther answered. " So I need you both to come back to the academy, all right? It's important."
" It's important," Sabrina as she knitted her eyebrows. She did not think Mom would be capable of killing dad.
" You have no concept of what's important," Five stated.
"Hey!" Klaus interjected. " Did I ever tell you guys about the time I waxed my ass with chocolate pudding?" He then started laughing. " It was so painful."
"What are you doing here?" Luther asked.
" Ay, ay, ay," Klaus began as his smile dropped. " What? I--What? I need an excuse to hang out with my family?"
" We're trying to have a serious conversation," Sabrina pointed out.
"What, and I'm incapable of being serious?" Klaus asked her. " Is that what you're saying?"
"Sabrina's got a point, you should get out," Five agreed.
"What?" Klaus asked, he then opened the door and stepped out. "Fine!"
"I'll pay you triple," Sabrina offered.
"Yay!" Klaus cheered as he closed the door and walked away.
"What the hell are you up to Five?" Luther ordered.
" Believe me, you wouldn't understand," Five answered.
" Try me," Luther offered. " Last I checked, I'm still the leader of this family."
" Well, last I checked, I'm 28 years older than you," Five recalled.
" You know what your problem is ?" Luther asked looking at Five.
" Really hoping you'll tell me," Five encouraged.
" You think you're better than us," Luther spilled.
" He has a point," Sabrina agreed with Luther. " You always have. Even when we were kids."
" But the truth is, you're just as messed up as the rest of us," Luther added. " We're all you have. And you know it."
" I don't think I'm better than you, Number One and Number Seven. I know I am," Five corrected. Luther and Sabrina both glanced at each other. " I've done unimaginable things, things you couldn't even comprehend."
"Right," Luther breathed.
"Just to get back here and save you all," Five concluded. The Variety Store shop door busted opened, revealing Klaus with items in his hand and the shop bell ringing.
" Whoo!" Klaus cheered as he glanced back.
"Stop!" a man ordered. A guard burst out of the shop. " Hey! Stop right now!"
" Hey, bitches!" Klaus yelled at them as he passed by as the guard blew his whistle.
" You get back here!" the guard ordered as a taxi halted to a stop.
" Out of the way, asshole!" Klaus ordered the taxi as he dropped the items.
" Now I'm starting to wonder if that was the wisest decision," Five wondered.
" So are you coming back to the academy or not?" Luther asked.
" I will," Sabrina said as she opened the sliding door.
" Sabrina!" Five exclaimed.
"I am going back to the academy," Sabrina stated as Luther struggled to get out of the van. " You can handle your stake out on your own for a bit."
" Sabrina," Five repeated himself as Luther got out. " Don't you dare, young lady!"
" See ya later," Sabrina smiled sarcastically at him as she and Luther closed the door. They started to walk away. "So, what's this about mom?"
"She may have something to do with dad's death," Luther informed as they journeyed home.
"May have?" Sabrina asked.
"Pogo showed Allison these surveillance tapes dad has on us from when we were little," Luther informed. " And a recent one shows dad's death and mom just standing by him."
"I am not fulling believing it," Sabrina confessed. " I mean it's mom."
Once they reached home, everyone else was there, surprisingly including Klaus. He was chopping down on a bag of chips. Sabrina stood next to Diego. They were watching the tape that Allison found.
"I mean, do you really think Mom would hurt Dad?" Vanya asked.
" You haven't been home in a long time, Vanya," Luther pointed out. " Maybe you don't know Grace anymore."
" You were on the moon for four years," Sabrina pointed out. " Like Vanya said, do you really think Mom would hurt Dad?"
"If he was poisoned, it would have shown in the coroner's report," Diego reported.
" Well, I don't need a report to tell me what I can see with my own eyes," Luther argued.
" As Sabrina said you were in space for four years," Diego stated. " Maybe all that low gravity in space messed with your vision. Diego reached forward and clicked the tv. "Look closer. Dad has his monocle. Mom stands up. Monocle's gone."
" Oh, yeah!" Klaus chuckled as he raised his bag of chips.
" She wasn't poisoning him. She was...taking it," Diego informed as he turned and walked passed Klaus. " To clean it"
" Then where is it?" Luther asked. " No, I've searched this house, including her things. She doesn't have it."
" That's because I took it from her," Diego admitted as he leaned against the table and raised a knife. " After the funeral." Everyone looked at him.
" You've had the monocle this whole time?" Allison demanded, she looked at everyone else and then back at Diego. " What the hell Diego!"
" Give it to me," Luther ordered.
" I threw it away," Diego reported.
" You what?" Sabrina asked as Allison scoffed.
" Look, I knew if Luther found it on Mom, he'd lose his shit," Diego confessed. He stood up, pointing a knife at Luther. " Just like he's going right now."
" Diego, you son of a bitch," Luther insulted, Diego raised his fists.
" Hey. No. Calm down," Vanya ordered as she tried to step in between the two, Klaus walked behind her with a drink in his hand. " Look, I know Dad was exactly an open book. But I do remember one thing he said. Mom was, well, designed to be a caretaker, but...also as a protector."
"What does that mean?" Allison asked.
"She was programmed to intervene if someone's life was in jeopardy," Vanya explained.
" Well, if her hardware is degrading, then..." Luther began. " We need to turn her off."
" Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait," Diego protested. " She's not just a vacuum cleaner you can throw in a closet. She feels things, I've seen it!"
"She just stood there, Diego, and watched out father die," Luther argued.
" I'm with Luther," Allison said.
"Surprise, surprise," Diego said.
" Shut up," Allison demanded.
" I'm with Diego," Sabrina took her side.
"That's actually surprising," Klaus said. Diego and Sabrina did not agree on many things. Then Luther and Diego looked at Vanya.
" I--I don't--" Vanya began.
" Yeah, she shouldn't get a vote," Diego agreed.
"Wh-" Luther began.
" I was gonna say I agree with you," Vanya told Diego.
" Okay. She should get a vote," Diego changed his mind. He pointed his knife at Klaus. " What about you, stoner boy? What do you got?"
" Oh, so what? You need my help now?" Klaus asked. " Oh, Get out of the van, Klaus! Well, welcome back to the van."
"What Van?" Allison asked.
"Don't worry about it," Sabrina shrugged it off.
" What's it gonna be, Klaus?" Luther asked.
" I'm with Diego because screw you!" Klaus answered. " And if Ben were here, he'd agree with me." Then Klaus hissed at an empty space.
" So that's four?" Diego counted.
" Wait," Luther breathed.
" To two," Diego added.
" Vote's not final yet," Allison said.
" What?" Diego asked.
" Five's not here," Allison informed. " The whole family has to vote. We owe each other that."
" Right," Luther agreed.
" No, we should wait," Vanya proposed. Everyone then walked out, not waiting for Five to return.
