Assiah: Cram School

"Poor kid." Shura whispered sympathetically, as she heard a few other students make derogatory comments to the only half demon in the class.

She didn't like demons obviously, but that didn't mean she wanted to see a half demon treated this badly, again. Maybe that's why she felt like she wanted to help the kid. She had seen what Rin had gone through and how things had turned out. They may have been on better terms with Rin, but that didn't mean they excepted his choices and life style. Part of him was the Rin they always knew, but part of him, the demon half, caused chaos and killed exorcists. No matter what happened or what truce they made, at the end of the day he was still a demon and they were exorcists. That didn't mean they waned to see him harmed, what they wanted was for him to come back and rejoin them. Though they knew that would never happen, not in their lifetime anyway.

Shura knew that was the reason she wanted to help the kid so much. She didn't want to see another half demon take shelter in Gehenna. To be honest she wasn't sure that this kid could take refuge in the demon world. Despite being half human, Rin was the son of Satan. He had a royal linage as well as the blue flames. She wasn't sure this kids odds were in his favor, that he'd be welcome with the same open arms.

"His name is Shiki, and aside from being an angry half demon, we don't know that much about him." Yukio said as he entered the room and joined Shura by the teachers desks.

"Hmm an angry half demon with no past. That doesn't sound like something the Grigory would let slide." Shura gave Yukio a side glance.

"Oh no, he does have a past. And a very tragic one from what I understand." Yukio continued. "Apparently his human mother was killed by demons. From the investigation, it looked liked the boys demon father had been there."

"Well damn. Didn't expect that." Shura glanced back to the kid.

Yukio walked to the front of the classroom to begin teaching his lessons for the day. Once everyone settled down he introduced himself and class began.

Later that day all the students headed to summoning class. A few were able to summon some relativity strong demons and were quite proud of themselves, and definitely made it known. Then Shiki's turn came. He didn't want to be a tamer, but everyone in the class had to try. He took the slip of paper and pricked his thumb. He let the blood soak into the paper before mumbling under his breath. For a few seconds nothing happened. Then a shadow stretched down from the ceiling and landed in a gooey pile in front of him. In another second it took the form of a small black cat with a long demon like tail. Shiki looked into the cat's eyes, and saw the most piercing shade of blue.

Shiki wasn't really sure what he expected. He honestly didn't think he'd be able to summon anything. He wasn't interested in becoming a tamer. As his other class mates teased him for summoning such a weak looking kitten, he shuttered. Something in his demon heritage told him this was no ordinary low class cat. He stared into those bright eyes for what felt like forever, before his thoughts were interrupted.

"A shadow type demon. Very good." The teacher said, with a hint of displeasure in his voice. It was clear to Shiki that even the experienced exorcists couldn't see the power almost dripping from the cat. "Alright everybody take your seats." Shiki, the other students and their new familiars did as they were told.

Izumo had been watching the cat closely ever since it had been summoned. Being one of the most talented tamers, she often helped the other teachers when it came to summoning class. It was always a good safety measure anyway to have more than one trained exorcist in the room. It was never known what somebody might manage to summon and should the newly summoned familiar act up it was always a good idea to have someone handle it and someone else to keep the students in order. And boy was she glad she came today. She knew there was something off about this demon cat. She was no fool and shape of that tail, the aura she could practically see radiating off that little body and those piecing blue eyes, looked awfully familiar. She supposed she'd be having a talk with Yukio later. But before she started to fill his head with more thoughts of Rin she wanted to make sure it actually was the demon in question. For the rest of the class she stood back in the corner and watched the cat, who just sat sat there flicking his tail.

After class the students were released for the day. Most returned to their dorms, other to find something to eat. Shiki, however, went to a deserted area of the park, with his new familiar trailing close behind. Once he was sure he was a lone, he directed his glare to the cat.

"Okay what's your deal?" His tone was harsh. The cat only meowed in response. "Don't play dumb! I can feel it. It makes me sick, that power. No demon that strong could be summoned." They both just stared at each other for a moment.

"You're wrong." The cat finally spoke, startling Shiki. Though he knew this demon had a voice he still wasn't expecting it. "Any demon can be summoned, but the more powerful the demon the more power it has to ignore the call. But lucky for you I decided to show up." The cat had a sly grin.

"Who are you then?" Shiki asked nervously. The longer he stayed in the cats presents, the more intoxicating the aura radiating off him seemed to grow. The cat showed off his fangs in a wiry smile.

"Ninth prince of Hell, the King of Shadows, at your service." Shiki froze and it took everything he had not to pass out. "And I expect you to keep that little fact between us." The cat looked over to the woods. "All of us." Two fox demons, that he immediately recognized as Izumo's familiars, came out of hiding.

"We are under contract." One of them said.

"And I am your king." The ninth prince sat tall. Even in his cat form he still looked regal. "And I am telling you that in this one particular instance you will not tell your master."

"Very well." The other fox said and they both turned and left. Though not without noticing two things about the youngest prince that were very peculiar. The first being how demanding he was. The boy was usually more tolerant and lenient, given his human heart. The second being his smell. He smelled of death and decay, like the last moments of prey. They doubted that the two changes were unrelated. They had been ordered not to tell their tamer who the cat was, but that wasn't going to stop them from telling her about the physical state the cat was in.

Rin watched them go. Though he knew they would not tell Izumo who he was, he still expected trouble and knew it would not be the last he saw of the twin foxes or their handler. But he could worry about that later. He needed to make sure his new "tamer" was on his side.

"Well then now that that's settled, lets get down to business." He turned to the boy.

"Why?" Shiki just barely mumbled.

"Why what?" Rin asked with a hint of a smirk.

"Why me?!... Why'd you answer my call?!" He shouted this time.

"Because we are the same." Rin stood up on all fours and took a few steps closer to the kid, before starting to pace.

"The Same?" He seemed confused and for good reason.

"We have the same goal. The same enemy." Rin still paced with his tail thrashing back and forth.

"What?" Shiki's previous confusion grew. He just wanted this demon, this demon king apparently, to start making sense.

"I know your enemy. I know what really happened that night." He stopped moving and looked directly at Shiki. The boy backed up a few steps before running into a tree and sliding down the trunk to sit on the ground. He knew exactly what night the demon cat was referring to. The night his mother was killed.

"How could you possibly?..." He trailed off.

"Just as humans keep track of their criminals, we keep track of ours. And the demon you're looking for isn't who you think. She's been causing chaos everywhere she goes. Your father tried to stop her. Unfortunately, she got to your family before we could stop her." Rin looked at the kid sympathetically. He really did mean it. He was sorry that they failed to stop her from creating another victim.

"What exactly are you trying to say!? And why be summoned at all!?" Shiki had regained his voice.

"For stealth. She can't sense me when summoned, unless we are in close proximity. This gives me a chance to do some reconnaissance without being drawn into battle. And you a chance to learn what the exorcists like to keep hidden." Rin smirked. He saw the look in the kid's eyes. He knew he had him now.

Shiki was filled with a new kind of determination. He never liked exorcists. Before things became so messed up and he was left orphaned, he lived peacefully with his parents. And he recalled his father being almost constantly under attack and though his mother was human she wasn't safe either. They both did their best to protect their child but, in the end, exorcists were always after the three of them. He only joined their ranks in order to find his mothers killer. Maybe, just maybe he would take a chance with this demon king.

"Okay." Shiki said calmly. Rin gave a smile full of fangs.

"I have two conditions." Rin continued, Shiki nodded. "The first no one can know who I truly am. As far as you're concerned, I'm just a shadow demon." Again, Shiki nodded. "The second is, if I tell you to rip the summoning paper, you rip it immediately, no questions asked."

"What? Why?" That didn't seem logically the Shiki. Familiars were supposed to listen to their tamers, not the other way around. But since he wasn't dealing with a normal demon, thing were bound to be different.

"Because while I can't be tracked entering Assiah while being summoned, I also can't be tracked leaving. And I can't let anyone know I'm gone. That would ruin the whole stealth thing ya know."

Shiki agreed to the terms, even if he had his doubts. He figured he still had a better chance at accomplishing his goals with a demon prince on his side. Even if he was a bit uncooperative.

"Alright but I have one more question." Shiki looked over to Rin. "Who exactly is this criminal and what has she done?"

"It's a bit of a long story." Shiki sat there unwilling to move. "Well then I guess if you don't mind, I'll tell you, but later. For now let's head back before someone gets suspicious." Shiki agreed reluctantly and the two walked back to the school. He wanted answers, but he also just wanted to sleep and forget this whole day.

Thanks for reading!

If you followed me from my other fanfic you'll know that I originally didn't have Rin as a cat but I do like the idea so I might go back and rewrite it with him as a cat.
