Old Pirate
Ghost-like flame wavers in place
As shadows dance in a dream-like state
And warmth rises to touch my face
In this dim light reminder of love's embrace
One word escapes these traitorous lips
I lose my balance like I've lost my grip
In a weak moment I let your name slip
In my private cabin on a sinking ship
Rising from a watery grave
I see that long forgotten knave
To which I was a foolish slave -
My lying heart; I tried to cast away.
But I can never seem to learn the lesson
I forget the answer and the question
When I hear that old seductive suggestion
And my evil heart takes possession
Mutiny! I cry. At least I try.
But it's too late now to defy
The end of the struggle is nigh
Soon I'll face them, eye to eye.
Time to drag that sorry anchor out
Turn the wheel and bring us about
Unfurl the mast and set the route
East or west; north or south
Fill me sails with wind and belly with rum
Wake old mind and shake off the numb
Tis foolish to all and brave to some
To ride uncharted and quite undone
My Bonny lies over the oceans blue
What else can an old pirate do?
Send word ahead that I'm no longer dead
And this rum soaked heart is still not through.
