Forever is Forever

An eternity of watching and waiting and passing time

And, time is not your friend

Time taunts you,

Turning everything that exists to ash.

Lives and trees and mountains tall

All crumble under Time's cold hands

Except you

Except the immortal one

You look to time and yearn

Plead

Beg for the end to come

But, for this

As powerful as Time is

It's powerless

You pass through it as a ghost of everything you once were.

All the dreams you had

Fulfilled and forgotten

All the mortal lives you touched

And were forgotten by

Forever is forever

As are you

And

Thus

You are lost

This was written for the Poetry profile's Versification 2026 contest, day ! The prompt was: "You were mortal, nothing could change that, it was what you knew to be true. But what if you were not mortal? What would you be?"
