twenty one

Inside it, Tara had her husband beside her, her baby still with her, and one more friend who wasn't going anywhere. For the first time in hours, I could finally breathe. "She's okay, and the baby is okay too," I said, and the boys let out a relieved breath. I knew there was a club meeting coming before Chibs and I met at home, and while that happened, I cleaned the house when Chibs walked through the door, seeing me walking around the living room, cleaning a little. "Food's on the stove, babe," I told him, quickly finishing up, heading into the kitchen, grabbing a plate for the two of us. Chibs grabbed a beer from the fridge and some water for me, set them on the table, and grabbed glasses and cutlery. We sat at the table, talked a little bit, and while I cleaned up, Chibs was already in the living room. "Im gonna lie down, Babe," I told him, leaning down and kissing him on the hair. Chibs grunted in return, and I just smiled, heading down the hallway to the bedroom. The next morning Chibs and I went early to the Clubhouse, and when I walked inside we smelled coffee, bacon, and enough fried eggs to feed an entire army. For once, nobody was arguing. Well. Nobody was arguing yet. I walked through the door beside Chibs, still half asleep, my hand tucked into his. "Morning, boys!" I called out to whoever was already there, which was everybody but us. Juice looked up from his plate. "Look who finally decided to join us," he grinned. I narrowed my eyes. "Juice, darling, I haven't had coffee yet. Don't make me regret loving you." I replied. He immediately returned his attention to his breakfast. "Morning, Riley," he quietly said. I grinned. "Much better," I mumbled, sitting at the large table. Chibs chuckled beside me and pressed a quick kiss to my temple before heading toward the coffee pot. "Coffee first, threats second, aye?" he said to me. "Exactly," I mumbled. Just then, I saw Jax, who had Abel in his arms. My entire face lit up. "ABEL!" I said, and Jax turned towards me. I saw Abel looking at me. "Hey, little guy," I said more quietly, and Abel's face turned into the sweetest smile. "You wanna hold him?" Jax asked, and I shrugged. Jax leaned over and placed Abel in my arms. I quickly moved my arms so Abel could be comfortable. "Someone's happy to see you," Tara said, who walked up next to Jax. I settled Abel in my arms who reached over, grabbing my shirt and holding on to it with his chubby little hand. "Well, hello there, handsome," I said softly, rocking him. He answered with a happy string of baby babbles. "Oh, really?" I asked, looking at the cute little face. Abel made babbly sounds, and I listened. "That's very interesting. And what else?" I asked, and so I talked to Abel for a while before passing him back to Jax to grab some food. And while we ate, I talked to everybody around me. "Here ye go, lass." Chibs brought me another coffee, and I looked up, softly touching his arm. "Thank you, sweet husband," I replied, squeezing his hand. He leaned down and kissed my forehead. I looked over at Jax and Abel, who was happily in his arms, and when I looked at the little boy, seeing him in Jax's arms made me smile. For all the trouble Jax had been through lately, seeing him sitting there with his son safe in the clubhouse made my heart ache in the best possible way. I looked over to the other side of the table where Lyla and Opie were talking. I noticed Opie was unusually quiet, which wasn't unusual. Which, honestly, should have been our first warning. Juice noticed him looking at his plate with that suspicious little expression. I gave Juice a questioning look, and Juice quickly shook his head, but when I looked back over where Opie was sitting, I saw he noticed the exchange. "What?" he asked, looking from me over at Juice. "Nothing." Juice quickly replied. "He's smiling," Juice replied in my direction. "Yeah, so?" I asked back. "You don't smile like that unless something's going on," Juice replied. Bobby nodded thoughtfully. He was sitting between Juice and me. "He's got a point," he grumbled. You guys are ridiculous; nothing is going on." Opie tried to say from where he was sitting, but from how he looked, I saw he was lying. "Bear," I said softly. Opie turned toward me. "What?" he asked. "Why are you being weird?" I asked in return. "I'm not being weird," Opie replied. "You're being very weird," I said after a little sigh. Tig pointed his fork at him. "She's right. You've got that look." Tig said with his mouth full. "Do shut that mouth when you're eating, geez," I grumbled at Tig. Everybody laughed except Opie, who waited until it quieted down. "What look?" he asked. "The look people get when they've either done something stupid, or they're about to tell us something that's going to make us all wish we'd stayed home," I replied. Happy nodded. "Usually both." Happy grumbled. The table erupted in laughter. Opie rubbed a hand over his face. "Fine, I have something to say," he grumbled, and the whole room went quiet. "Do tell, Bear." I said from where I could see him. Opie looked around the table. Then he smiled. A real smile this time. "I asked Lyla to marry me," he said with a smile, exchanging a look with Lyla, who was sitting next to him. The room went silent. For exactly one second. Then— "YOU WHAT?" Tig yelled. I heard something clatter, and when I looked to my left, I saw Juice's fork clattering on his plate. Bobby's eyebrows shot up. Happy was in the middle of a bite, with his fork halfway to his mouth when he stopped.
