twenty eight
There were no speeches left to give. No jokes that could make this easier. Just a group of people who had spent years riding together, fighting together, and protecting one another. And now they were about to be separated. Eventually, Jax checked the time. "Alright. We need to go," he said, and I saw him look around where we were standing. My stomach dropped. Just like that. The moment we'd all been avoiding had arrived. The men began gathering their things. Bobby clapped Juice on the shoulder. Happy exchanged a few quiet words with Tig. Kozik gave Jax a nod, while the prospects stood back and watched. I saw Jax give something to Phil with instructions before heading towards his bike, and I watched Piney climb into the bus parked in the middle of the courtyard. I looked at Chibs standing next to me. "Come back safe to me." I quietly said, and Chibs turned his head to me. "Aye," Chibs replied, turning fully to me, softly placing his hands on my cheeks and pulling me in to kiss me on the forehead, stepping back, leaving his hands on my cheeks. He brushed his thumb over my cheek. "I'll be back as soon as this is done," he replied, and I nodded. Then he released his hands and walked to the bus. "Hey," I yelled, and everybody turned around to face me. I tried to smile. "I love you, idiots," I called out towards Clay's group. Tig raised his hand. "Love you too, short stuff," he yelled back. "Tig!" I yelled as loud as I could. He grinned. "Had to get one last one in," he said more quietly, but I was still able to hear it. A few of them laughed. I laughed too, though it came out shaky. I looked at the group, at each of the men who were my family, and then to the bus, where I saw Piney looking out of the bus with Bear leaning against the bus and my husband turning when I called out. I looked around at all of them one last time. My family. My people. The men who had somehow become some of the most important people in my life. "Come home," I whispered. Nobody made a joke that time. Jax nodded. Bobby gave me a gentle smile. Juice's eyes shone. Happy dipped his chin. I looked at Chibs, and he gave me a little smile. I knew he had something to do; it was in the plan. Then they began to leave. I couldn't follow them. I couldn't watch the door close behind them. I just stood there when I felt a hand on my hand; I flinched, but when I turned my head, I saw Gemma stop next to me. She intertwined her fingers with mine when I felt somebody on the other side of me; I saw the blond hair of Lyla on my other side, and I knew why they were here I looked back to Gemma and saw Tara on Gemmas other side and together we watches as the van and the bikes drove out first and then a little later the bus dove out of the courtyard and left the lot. "I want to go home." I whispered more to myself but I felt a pressure of a squeeze from my right nad and when I looked I saw Gemma looking at me. "Go and rest sweetheart it was a long day and you and your little one need all the rest you can get." she softly told me, I nodded in return and released their hands hugged Gemma first then Lyla and last Tara allthough I was careful since she had Abel in her arm. "See you around." I quietly said before walking to where I had the Charger parked. I drove home and fell onto the couch closing my eyes and was actually sleeping for a long time until I heard something at the front door and I woke up rising from the couch and when the door opened I saw Chibs walking in, he looked exhausted and when I walked closer I saw he had something between anger and relieve in his face. When he saw me he put his keys onto the counter next to the door where we always keep the keys getting out of his shoes and putting his jacket away. "What happened?" I asked but he didnt answer me right away just walked past me into the kitchen and I followed him, when I leaned against the doorframe he turned around looking at me with a beer in hand. "Stahl and Jimmy are dead." he told me. "Dead?" I asked and he nodded, now I knew why he was so relieved. I walked over and he put the beer to the side. He opened his arms. I walked straight into them. And this time, I didn't try to hold myself together. I cried for the men who had left. For the months ahead. For Juice, who would have to learn how to live without his usual chaos. For Jax and Tara. For Bobby, Happy, Tig, and every other person who had become part of my family. Chibs held me through all of it. And when I finally quieted, he kissed the top of my head. "We'll get through this, lass." he softly told me. I clutched his shirt. "Together?" I asked in the same soft tone. His arms tightened around me. "Always." Chibs kissed me on the top of my head wrapping his arms as tight as he could. For now, I let myself believe him. The next months I worked and sometimes visited Gemma at the garage and Tara at the hospital where we talked about stuff. Chibs came home every evening and we ate dinner together. Juice called as promised once a week and I went to visit them as often as we were allowed rotating between the boys. Gemma joined me a few times to see Clay.
