Chapter One

I smiled as I thought back to how Justin had helped me clean off the words from my kitchen window.

It was a normal sunny day as my friend, Amber and I were cleaning up when I heard someone gasping from outside.

Amber and I ran to see what it was, but by then, the damage had already been done. Some of the girls around the neighborhood thought it would be a good idea to spray paint some words onto the window about how I'm horrible to look at.

"Stop it you guys! This isn't funny!" I screamed at them.

Taylor and the others laughed as they walked away, leaving me and Amber to clean up the mess.

Justin ran up to us, stopping in his tracks, when he saw the words in big, red letters.

"Maddie, do you know who did this?" He asked me, with a stern look on his face.

Amber spoke up for me.

"Maddie was bullied by some 9th grade girls . They told her to watch her figure or something like that. When she didn't listen, they ended up throwing her lunch in the trash."

Justin surprised me by giving me a hug, telling me everything was going to be okay.

"Those words don't define you, Maddie. I know you're stronger than that."

"Thanks, Justin." I smiled as I hugged him back.

"Of course. Do you want to go bake a cake to take your mind off of you know?" Justin asked as he scratched the back of his nervously.

"Sure. Lead the way, o great one." I laughed as I gave him a mock now.

Justin laughed in return as the three of us walked back inside my house.

Amber smirked at the two of us.

She quickly excused herself to go help out her mom with the dishes.

I let out a curse in reply as I realized she purposely left me alone with Justin.

Justin looked in the direction Amber was walking and shrugged as he finally found a video on his phone that showed how to make this sort of Japanese cake.

As soon as we got to the kitchen, I looked down to see my cat, Carla, purring happily and cuddling Justin.

The sight of him and her was just too adorable.

I laughed.

"It seems like Carla has taken a liking to you.

"I guess she has." Justin laughed as he gathered the ingredients for the cake.

"Ready to get started on the cake now?"

"Sure, I can't bake without my partner in crime."

I laughed as Justin continued.

"So, I'm just going to come right out and say it."

He took a deep breath.

"How are you holding up after the incident that happened today?"

I measured the sugar as I started to go deep in thought.

"I'm coping well, considering the pep talk you gave me. By the way, how did you got to Amber and me so fast? Some of my neighbor's houses are 3 blocks away from where I live.

Justin cleared his throat as he turned away from me.

"Well, ever since me and my family moved here, I've grown quite fond of having you around. I had this feeling you might want someone to talk to in case your friend lives far away so I convinced my parents that we should live near you and your family."

I smiled as he continued.

"I wanted to be the person that you can talk to when you're sad or upset and that no matter what happens, I'll always be there to help you since you're my girlfriend....friend....friend who's a girl. That's what I meant." He stuttered back to me.

"Well, thanks for deciding to live near by so that you could help me."

"No problem."

An awkward silence followed and I was desperate to get rid of it so I started singing a song to keep my mind off of it.

Justin gave me a smile and began to sing the next few lines of the song I was singing.

But there's only you and I
And we've got no shot

He smirked as he sang the next lines as I mixed the batter and he put the cake in the oven.

This could never be
You're not the type for me

He stopped as he sat on the kitchen table and pulled me up to sit next to him.

"I'm not really your type?" I asked, giving him a shy smile.

"Well, um, you are my type, but, uh..."

He immediately started to get closer to me, giving me a quick kiss on the hand as he heard the timer go off.

I looked at him, speechless as if to say "what was that for?"

"That was to make you feel better about today's incident with the bullies. I like you just the way you are."

“I smiled blissfully as we enjoyed each other's company in the moonlight, knowing that my prince in shining armor would always be there when I needed him.”
