chapter 2
Droplets of water continued to pour down from the cluster of dark clouds. Marinette remained frozen in the darkest and coldest corner of the building with her legs pulled up to her chest. Burying her head on her numb hands, droplets continued to seep from her misty blue eyes. She felt a pang of guilt and regret looming over her body.
"Why can't I be a normal girl like every other? Why am I treated as if I'm a slave? Why does it have to be me?" She questioned herself under the midnight sky.
Marinette directed her eyes over to an old clock hanged against the wall. The digits exhibited that it was past midnight. A few moments later, she wiped her tears away, stood up on her feet, and made her way towards her room.
She predicted that the other members of Hawk Moth's gang were asleep as she heard loud snores upon going to her bedroom. Her bedroom was nothing but dull. Layers of dust were plastered across her insipid room. Marinette would usually sleep on the cold ground every night with graffitied walls surrounding her.
She gently laid her body on the hard ground and managed to close her eyelids against the moon's dim light. Each and every night, time would solely stand still as Marinette tries to block out the pain and insecurity she has left.
❖❖❖
It was yet another day of mischief and disorder. Marinette woke up to the blinding rays of sunlight that streamed through her bedroom window. Her eyes were red, puffy and swollen from last night's ventures. She sat up straight on the floor that she slept on as she heard frantic knocks coming from the door. "Hawk Moth wants to see you in his office. Now," a stern voice said.
Marinette stood up in a daze and ran down the building's dark hallway. She hated being late whenever she was called to Hawk Moth's office. He would usually yell at her for the slightest of mistakes. Marinette entered his office and positioned herself in front of his desk. Hawk Moth turned his swivel chair around to face Marinette.
"Marinette, you are to steal more cash from the Agreste residences, am I clear?" Hawk Moth ordered. He put emphasis on the word 'more' as Marinette only stole one sack of cash last night.
"But sir, what if ---"
"Silence!" He slammed his fist on the wooden desk loudly. "You're going back there or else I will gladly end your stay here! Do you understand?!"
Instead of being startled, Marinette's courage didn't waver. She had to leave this place and exact her revenge on Hawk Moth.
"Yes sir," she managed to blurt out.
"Now get going!" Hawk Moth yelled before sinking back in to his swivel chair.
Marinette headed for the door and, being the clumsy girl that she always was, she tripped over a hexagonal box and fell flat on the floor.
"What was that?" Hawk Moth asked, shooting Marinette a glare.
Marinette casted her eyes to the object she tripped on and to her surprise, it was an odd looking box. She figured that it belonged to Hawk Moth but instead of giving it back to him, she kept it in her satchel.
"Nothing sir," Marinette lied and ran back to her room with thoughts of opening the unusual box.
❖❖❖
Marinette locked her bedroom door as soon as she entered her room. She wanted to make sure that no one would disturb her. "What is this?" Marinette thought as she opened the hexagonal box. She had a glimpse of a pair of red earrings and to her luck, a bright beam of light happened to appear before her eyes, like it wanted to blind her. Marinette abruptly dropped the box from her hands as she was too startled.
After the beam of light faded, a small red creature appeared in front of her unexpectedly. "What are you?" Marinette asked the floating creature in her defensive stance. The creature floating in front of her wasn't any close to ordinary.
"I'm a kwami and my name is Tikki," the creature replied. "I grant powers and yours is the power of creation. You mustn't tell anyone that I exist."
"I can't be a superhero, Tikki. I'm just a villain who runs into troubles," Marinette sighed, doubted that she wasn't up to her job, despite that she's a wanted villain who fights against a superhero. She's nothing but bad luck.
"Don't worry, Marinette. It's all going to change soon," Tikki told her. Marinette thought that this was her only chance to exact her revenge on Hawk Moth for everything that he has put her through. She was tired of committing crimes and running through troubles in Paris.
"This is all going too fast Tikki. I wont be able to pull this off," Marinette told her while she wears the red earrings. After all, she is a villain for several years. She needed more time to learn the exact opposite of it.
"Trust yourself, Marinette. Just say spots on."
"Spots on?" Marinette stated although it sounded like a question. Her body was suddenly coated with a red suit that comes with black polkadots. The suit also included a mask to hide her identity.
Once the transformation has finished, Marinette stared at her mirror looking at her brand new self.
She has finally escaped Hawk Moth's prison and began a new life.
