Chapter 14
The sound of the fight that was taking place brought the wolf to the surface. She demanded with such force that I couldn't hold back any longer. It was probably time to let her take control anyway.
Now, I paced the bathroom floor, waiting for something to happen. I don't know if it would be the baby's birth or the fight ending that would come first. As much as I would love it if this pain was gone, I wanted to know that Konrad and my females were alive and okay. This was only going to end one way.
The Alpha had come here clearly intending to take over my pack. Konrad was dealing with it and this was nothing more than a technicality that he would rely on here. I should be the one that handled the process of dealing with a coup but because I was medically indisposed, my Beta was permitted to take control of the pack.
There were two options when it came to a coup. We could use our words which I had done with Konrad. In that path, we would remain as our bipedal form and negotiate, surrender or die. The other option was our werewolf. In that form, we stated there was no room for negotiation and no surrender would be offered. Death would happen to one or the other. When that happened, the victor would take control of both packs.
Konrad was making a clear statement by taking his werewolf form. He was telling the Alpha that he was not prepared to relinquish control.
The wolf sat down, listening to the fight. Her ears pricked at the sounds of her females as they growled at each other. They were talking about the moves to make to help Konrad. Every time my wolf heard a wolf yelp, one of the females would say it was the Alpha. It was like they knew that I would be worried and kept me up to date with information about the fight. Konrad was wearing him down, taking nips at his hind legs whenever the Alpha turned. The females would wait until the time was right and then lunge at the Alpha.
My wolf whined as she rose to her feet again. Moving against the far wall, she circled the floor and laid down. As her head rested against the cold tiles, I could hear her thoughts. After all, they were my thoughts, just shaped differently.
She missed her mate, and she knew he was in danger. She knew he could die.
Belief in his ability had risen dramatically after seeing how easily he took down Colin at Midland Peak, but that didn't mean that she thought that things would go smoothly.
Her eyes closed as another whine escaped. The pain was relentless, pounding and brutal.
Something else pounded, and it had nothing to do with the labor.
The wolf perked up and looked at the door. She knew the danger of what could be on the other side and smartly remained quiet.
The door handle jiggled, but the door did not open. I'd locked it when entering the room. It wasn't much and anyone on the other side could open it if they knew how. When someone thumped against the door again, I knew that they didn't know. The door opened, smashing against the wall.
Konrad's body heaved as he stood at the threshold in nothing more than a pair of shorts. He smiled and moved to the wolf. She licked his face as he brushed his hand over her fur. The wolf wanted to fix all of his scratches, remove the bruises and fix anything else that she could find.
"I know. It's all over now. He's definitely dead, and our lovely ladies are dealing with the cleanup. They'll call the council and tell them how terrible their tracker is and I'm sure there will be an investigation but for now, I need to get you upstairs."
The wolf stood, awkwardly walking to the door. Her body limped, struggling with the pain while trying to hold everything together. With the return of her mate, she'd stopped trying to delay the birth, and now her body was responding by pushing harder on the labor.
Konrad helped my wolf up the stairs after ushering her away from the main part of the pack house. It was like he knew that she'd want to go in there and rip him to pieces for taking away her peaceful labor.
Entering the room, the wolf looked around and saw that things had been returned to where they belonged. Erin and Paula were putting the books back on the shelves.
"Okay, the room's clean enough."
Paula scoffed, rolling her eyes.
"You say that, but I see books on the floor."
"I know, but Megan's been through a lot. Now, get out, please."
Erin grinned as she pushed Paula out of the room.
"Have fun," she called out.
Konrad shut the door, dropped his shorts and let the wolf take control. He walked over to my stubborn werewolf and nudged her towards the bed. Once she was down on her side, he sat next to the bed and waited.
Now that the drama was over, the werewolf relaxed, and it didn't take long for the strongest of contractions to hit. The pressure grew and I could feel her push. Konrad's attention turned as the top leg lifted.
He whined as his snout lowered, nudging the little wolf that had emerged. Mamma wolf began cleaning her little man, who yowled his complaint. She was mid-lick when Konrad whined again, nudging another little bundle of wet fur over the bed.
The proof that Konrad and I had sex too much was pushed along the bed to wait her turn to be cleaned after her brothers. When Konrad whined again, the wolf carried on with cleaning the second-born wolf. The first was already latched and greedily gobbling the milk and the fourth was lined up, ready for her cleaning.
Konrad changed forms, smiling as he shook his head.
"Four."
He grabbed four ribbons and wrapped one around the body of the first cub, tying it off with a pretty bow. When our second son was clean, Konrad lifted him and repeated the process. They were birth ribbons designed for exactly this situation. An Alpha needed to know which would be the Beta and who would follow after should anything happen.
When he'd done all four, Konrad changed forms againand climbed onto the mattress behind my wolf to snuggle in behind her. With herbabies feeding and her mate alive, the wolf relaxed and let sleep take overher.
