"That's right, Fin! Like a frog! You got it, baby!" Findlay stood on the edge of the dam and grinned at his daughter. She was doing it. She was swimming and he had taught her.
Fin beamed back at him. "Do you think I could swim to the other side, Dad?"
"If you feel strong enough."
She dog paddled. "I do. I think I can do it. Do you think I can?"
"Of course, you can, bunny. You can do anything." Findlay pointed to the other side of the dam. "I'll walk around the trough and wait for you there."
"Okay." Fin nodded and set her mind to swimming. She smiled. He had called her bunny again. When he'd first said it two days after her ordeal with Cody it had made her heart ache. She had been bunny. Not her mother. Memories had rushed into her head. Findlay tickling her and telling her she was a bonny bunny.
When she reached the other side Findlay held his hand out and pulled her up the bank. "I knew you could do it. You're just like your mother. She had the determination of an ox."
Fin squeezed the water out of her clothes and her hair. "I'm going to practise every day and when I'm faster I want to learn to do the free stroke."
"Freestyle." Findlay chuckled. "It's called freestyle." He watched her laugh, knowing he had missed out on so much. But not anymore. They had been back together for a month and he had never been happier or healthier in the last ten years.
She had asked him about Sarah and he'd been able to talk about her. Each day they'd stuck to Findlay's routine of eating breakfast and writing a list of the jobs they wanted to work on together.
"Come on." Findlay put his arm around her shoulder. "I want to go to the Peterson's and see if I can buy back that timber I sold him."
"The greenhouse timber?"
Findlay chuckled at the look on Fin's face. "Yeah. I'm gonna build it for your mother like I was always going to do. I think we'll call it Sarah's Place. What do you say?"
Fin buried her face in his shoulder. Findlay held her tighter as she said, "I think that's a great idea, Dad."
Findlay pulled the station wagon near the house. The dogs ran towards them. Fin held her breath. Max was there. She scanned the surroundings in search of Cody's truck but couldn't see it. She bit on her tongue and had to remind herself to remember him as Beau but it was hard.
Shane stepped out of the shed and yelled at the dogs to shut up.
"Come on let's go and talk to Shane," Findlay said as he opened the car door.
"I'll wait here, Dad."
He looked back at her. "You're sure?"
Fin nodded and smiled at him. "He'll want the car driven to the shed so I'll do that," she said as she slid across the bench seat to get behind the wheel.
"Yeah, you're right." Findlay slung on his hat and headed toward the shed.
Shane and Findlay shake hands. Shane smiled and nodded at something Findlay said. There was no sign of Cody. Fin checked herself. Beau. His name was Beau. She wished she could stop thinking about him. They weren't friends anymore and he hadn't tried to see her like Findlay said he would. A tear seeped from her eye. She wiped it away and whispered, "Don't think about him."
Findlay waved his hand indicating she should drive the car to the shed. Fin turned it on and moved forward. Images of the last time she had driven towards Shane's shed came to mind. This time Fin didn't stall. She grinned because she had been able to reverse it without the help of Cody Compton, ah... Beau Hawkins.
"Hey, Fin."
"Hello." She smiled and hung her head. Max jumped on the side of the car and whined at her through the window. Fin patted him.
"He's missing Beau," Shane said as he peered at her.
"Oh." Fin didn't know what to say. She didn't understand what Shane meant but she didn't want to ask.
He solved the problem for her.
"Yeah. He's gone back to his family. I'm looking after Max for him, but the poor bastard has been pining." Shane patted the dog and pushed him away from the car. "Not much I can do about it though. I haven't heard from Beau for a while, so I'm not sure when he's coming back." Shane cocked his head and tapped the car window ledge. "See you, Fin. I better help your father load this timber." He jerked his head at Findlay. "He's looking good by the way."
Fin nodded. She didn't say anything because she still wasn't used to people talking to her. Shane Peterson had never spoken to her like that before. Fin wondered why he had now.
Her chest constricted. He knew about her and Beau. Fin put her hand to her mouth. Beau must have told him so Shane wanted to let her know he had gone away. Fin gasped. He had left her and gone to his family.
The pressure on her chest increased. Fin sucked in some quick breaths of air. It didn't matter. She didn't care. They weren't friends anymore so it didn't matter. Did it?
It's so good to see Fin and Findlay getting along.
But poor Fin. I think she misses Beau as much as Max does. :(
