Summer Festival

A/N: I wrote this one shot in creative writing today because the teacher told us to write something in 40 minutes and fan fiction was one of the options, so obviously, I wrote about Outlaw Queen (and VioletBeliever because they're super cute).

Btw the Neal in this is Neal Cassidy. Just pretend he didn't die, or that this takes place in a Once on Instagram-type universe. (But this is NOT canon in the ooi books)

Finally, this is highkey inspired by a VioletBeliever fanfic titled The Love Between Us (I don't remember the author and I'm too lazy to go look it up), which is amazing and somewhat satisfying my need for more VioletBeliever. But there are so few VB fics out there and a lot of them (at least on fanfiction.net) are half CS, which makes them hard for me to read because I'm constantly torn between "Yes, VioletBeliever!" and "Ew, CaptainSwan..."

The summer night was just warm enough to be able to walk around with no jacket on, though many people wore hoodies or sweaters as they walked around the festival. Henry and Violet were just two teenagers in the crowds of Storybrooke citizens and citizens of other, countless realms, that had gathered for the summer festival. Emma was waltzing around somewhere, probably trying to bribe Neal into buying her food, which left Henry alone with Violet.

"So..." Henry kicked a pebble and it skidded across the blacktop. "What would you like to do?" the boy looked up into his girlfriend's eyes. They were still stuck in that awkward hey-we-just-started-dating phase, but Henry was determined to eventually get past that.

Violet thought for a moment. "Well, I wouldn't say no to spending an hour trying to win a giant stuffed bear..." Violet and Henry both burst into a fit of laughter. Emma would be okay with Henry and Violet lugging a giant stuffed bear home, but Regina was the one who would be driving them home after the festival, and Regina would not allow a giant teddy bear in her car. Then again, it probably wouldn't even fit with five people seated in the car.

"How about something smaller?" Henry offered. "I'll win you a giant stuffed bear when my other mom is the one driving us home."

"I think that's a good idea." Violet entwined her hand with Henry's absentmindedly and they then began to discuss which game had the best prize that was small enough for Regina to not reject.

"Robin, would you quit eating my food?" Regina moved her churro out of the way, so Robin couldn't lean over and take another bite. "First my fries and now this?"

"I was the one who bought it for you," Robin tried to reason.

"You were the one who ordered it with my money!"

"Same difference." Robin leaned over and snatched the churro away from Regina. Regina was about to lunge for it when Emma and Neal walked up to them. Robin quickly handed Regina her churro back and she continued eating it quietly.

"Hey," Emma waved. "Neal and I were wondering if you two wanted to go on the ferris wheel with us?"

Regina was ready to spout out several reasons why she did not want to go on the ferris wheel - especially with Emma and Neal - but before she could, Robin had already accepted the offer. "Sure. We'll meet you at the line once Regina finishes her churro."

Emma and Neal walked away, pleased with the answer they had received. Once they were out of earshot, Regina punched Robin's arm. "Robin! You know how much I hate ferris wheels!"

"You hate heights, Regina."

"Yeah, and ferris wheels are pretty darn tall. What happens if we get stuck at the top? What then? What if the cheap metal that's holding it up finally gives way and we fall to our deaths?"

"What if I help cure your fear of heights?" Robin asked.

"It's not a fear--"

"It's definitely a fear."

"--and you won't be able to cure it either! Gods, you're impossible."

"And yet, you still love me. Come on, Regina, if you really don't want to go, you don't have to. But I imagine that once you're up there, you won't be as afraid as you think you'll be."

Regina sighed. "Fine. But only because I'll be there with you."

The lights on the game began flashing and Henry and Violet both whooped with excitement. They high-fived, their faces sporting identical grins. "We did it! We won!"

"Pick any prize you like," the eighteen-year-old attending the game said in a bored tone. Henry turned to Violet.

"What would you like?"

"You can pick. You did most of it anyways."

"No, you pick. I'll give the prize to you either way."

Violet studied the stuffed animals that decorated the booth for several minutes before she pointed towards a puppy with deep purple fur. "That one."

The attendant handed the puppy to Henry, who held it out to Violet. "Your prize, Milady."

Violet blushed and giggled as she accepted the stuffed puppy. "You're trying too hard to be Robin," she teased. "I'm sure I'll have to hear the word 'Milady' at least twelve times on the ride home."

"Your house is only seven minutes away."

"My point exactly!"

Henry shook his head slightly as they walked away. "Gods, my mom is so in love with him. He could quote Dora the Explorer at her and she'd still gaze at him lovingly."

Violet and Henry both laughed, mostly because they knew it was true. Once the laughing fit was over, Henry composed himself. He held his hand out to Violet, "Would you like to ride the ferris wheel with me, Milady?"

"No!" Henry looked disappointed, so Violet continued speaking, "Call me something other than 'Milady' and we'll see."

"Would you like to ride the ferris wheel with me, Violet?" Henry made sure to emphasize her name.

Violet smiled. "I'd love to."

"Robin, I don't think I can do this," Regina whispered as they approached the giant, looming, ride. "I can't do this. I'm going back to where I'm safe on the ground."

"Milady, are you sure you want to back out in front of Emma? She'll hold this over you forever," Robin warned her. Regina sighed, admitting defeat. Robin dropped a kiss on the top of her head. "Just close your eyes if you need to. I'll be right there the whole time."

As Regina and Robin climbed into their carriage for the ride, Regina's heartbeat seemed to double. She grabbed Robin's hand for support as the ride started moving. Emma and Neal were in the carriage next to them, and Regina could hear their excited voices, but couldn't quite make out what they were saying. She tried to focus on her breathing, but once they got too far up, it stopped working.

Regina squeezed her eyes shut and her breaths came out shorter and faster. The ferris wheel jolted to a stop, and Regina had to bite her lip to prevent a yelp from escaping. She opened her eyes slowly and turned to look at Robin. His light blue eyes looked darker than usual in the night.

"Robin?"

"Yes, Milady?"

"I'm scared," she admitted. She spared a glance past Robin's loving gaze to look out at the festival. She could see how far up in the air they were, and all she wanted was to be safe on the ground.

"Well then I guess I should distract you from your fears." Robin leaned in and pressed his lips to Regina's. The moment their lips touched, all of Regina's fears of falling to her death disappeared. She inhaled Robin's forest-y scent and felt herself relaxing.

They broke apart slowly, both pairs of eyes still shut. "Did that help?"

Regina nodded. "Y-yeah." The ride started moving again, and Regina jumped slightly, moving towards Robin. Once the shock was over, Regina let out a nervous laugh. "Do you know how many people would kill to get stopped at the top of a ferris wheel with their soulmate so they could feel like they were in a movie?"

"I'd assume most of the people here."

The ferris wheel began to circle back up to the top, and Robin caught Regina's lips in another kiss to distract her from the heights. Regina's fear of heights seemed to be gone - at least for the moment - but she didn't want Robin to stop his kisses every time they reached the top, so she kept her thoughts to herself.

~

"Hey, is that your mom and Robin?" Violet pointed to the top of the ferris wheel. Henry squinted his eyes and he slowly nodded. The couple kissing at the top of the wheel was definitely his mother and her boyfriend.

"Oh my gods," Henry covered his face in embarrassment. "I can't believe them."

"Don't worry, it's kinda cute. I mean, not as cute as if it were us, but--" Violet was cut off by Henry's lips on hers.

"I'll get us to stop at the top of the ferris wheel, and then it will be us," Henry promised. It took three rides, but Henry made good on his promise and he kissed Violet at the top of a ferris wheel, under the moonlight.

~

Also, I was thinking about the fear of heights thing for Regina, and it would kinda make since because she almost fell to hear death in Quite a Common Fairy and it never bothered her as the Evil Queen because her magic could do anything and so what if she died? No one cared about her anyways.

But now that she's got her happy ending - now that she has something to live for - she's afraid of losing that because of one wrong step, or one too many slams on the balcony railing.

Just a thought.
