Chapter 49

10 years later…

“Dr. Choi! Happy Valentines!”

Soobin puts down the chart he’s holding then puts the ballpen back on his lab coat when he heard someone’s voice. He turned around and saw his best bud holding a rose on his hand and smiling at him.

“Aww,” Soobin reacted and giggled then receive the flower. “Thank you Beomgyu! I am so busy, I didn’t even know it’s Heart’s day,” Soobin said and looked at the red rose.

“That’s why I’m here to remind you about it,” Beomgyu replied and pinch Soobin’s check. “Are you free this evening? Should we go on a date?” Beomgyu asks.

“Oh! Oh! Let’s go! For some reason, I want to eat some grilled pork belly,” Soobin exclaimed, looking excitedly.

“Okay! Let’s have it later! I’ll fetch you here later, okay? I still have some damn meetings to do,” Beomgyu said.

“Yes, you sure are busy,” Soobin teased him.

“Yeah, I kinda hate it but I don’t have any choice. See you later, Binnie,” Beomgyu bid his goodbye and kissed Soobin’s cheeks before leaving.

“Ah, is Dr. Choi inside?” one of the patient, asks as Beomgyu went out.

“Ah yes, yes, he’s in there,” Beomgyu replied and smiles.

“Thank you, they said he’s a really good doctor. I-I hope… he can help me,” she muttered and continued to walk inside Soobin’s office.

Beomgyu smiles when he heard it. People never know what Soobin needs to get through just to be in the position and to have the capabilities to help others. Beomgyu is one of the people who witnessed how Soobin almost die couple of times just for him to smile like that again.

Flashback. Everything started when Soobin finally opens his eyes after almost a year of being in coma. Beomgyu was the only one in there when he noticed Soobin’s finally moving.

“S-Soobin? Soobin! You’re awake! Soobin, are you okay? Does it hurt somewhere—“

“Yeonjun…”

Beomgyu paused from pressing the button to call the doctor when he heard what Soobin’s first word after waking up. “W-what? I’ll call the doctor—“

“I heard him… He was crying,” he paused and looks at Beomgyu. “Where’s Yeonjun?” he asks.

Beomgyu doesn’t know what to answer. He just stood in there, finding the right words or it may shock Soobin and will cause panick. So Beomgyu holds Soobin’s hand, really tight and smiled at him.

Soobin’s confused at the way Beomgyu’s reacting. “W-what’s the matter? Where is he? A-and what time is it? Where I am? Beomgyu, why aren’t you answering me?”

The door suddenly opens and Soobin saw Taehyun wearing a school uniform. “Oh! You’re awake! Welcome back Soobin!” he greeted him.

“Taehyun… Where’s Yeonjun?” Soobin asked him.

“Taehyun don’t—“

“He’s gone,” Taehyun stated.

“H-huh?”

Beomgyu left no choice but to tell Soobin about what happened but before he did, he let him calm down first and make sure to listen well. He’s holding his hands the entire time so that Soobin won’t feel alone.

“… And a week after that, we just heard the news that Park Hansol died and Yeonjun’s not here anymore as well as Hueningkai. They just let them take special exams so they can end the school without problems and then… we don’t know where they are now…”

Soobin nods, trying to calm himself after hearing what happened. He looks down a bit to get some strength and then looks up the ceiling to stop his eyes from crying.

“Where’s mom?” Soobin asked instead.

They thought Soobin will be fine about it. He didn’t mentioned Yeonjun’s name after Beomgyu explained things but he’s quiet until he got discharged. Soobin needed to retake the whole second semester and he become’s Taehyun’s classmate but due to his condition, they are allowing Soobin to just stay at home. While Beomgyu continued being a freshman in university, getting ahead from Soobin and Taehyun.

Beomgyu noticed Soobin’s not fine at all. Doctors said maybe it’s PTSD and Mrs. Choi believed it but as for Beomgyu, it’s not just PTSD. Soobin’s longing for Yeonjun and he can’t hide it.

“Soobin, let’s go buy some ice cream!” Beomgyu invited Soobin when his class ended and went to Soobin’s house.

Soobin smiles sadly. “Y-you know… Yeonjun…” he bit his lips when he muttered his name. “H-he really likes buying me… i-ice cream too,” he cried.

That wasn’t the first time Soobin cried because of the same person. Everything’s reminded him of Yeonjun. In everything he does, there’s Yeonjun. And he always finds his self in the same situation whenever he thought of him.

The worst one is when Soobin went drunk and went to the Ministry of Justice and personally asked Yeonjun’s mom where he is. Beomgyu was there to drag him out. Good thing Yeonjun’s mom was at the trial court that time.

“N-no! Beomgyu! Please! Please, let me go! Please!” Soobin cried while trying to pull his hands of Beomgyu’s grip.

“Let’s go home, Binnie. You need to rest,” Beomgyu replied, acting tough.

“Let me go!” Soobin raved and pushed Beomgyu. He cried and falls on the ground while crying so hard. “Y-Yeonjun… Where is he? I need to find him, Beomgyu. I-I need to be with him…”

Beomgyu looks away because he can’t afford to see his beloved beinghurt like this. “S-stand up, let’s go home.”

“No! No! No!” Soobin throw tantrums. “Y-Yeonjun finally found something that he wanted to do. Y-Yeonjun builds a dream because of me a-and… and I promise that I’m going to be with him! W-we… we promise so much things together, Beomgyu. I n-need to see him… P-please… Please, help me look for him and fulfill those… P-please.”

Beomgyu lowered himself and wipes Soobin’s face. “Soobin, listen to me,” Beomgyu started and smiled while holding his hands. “You can’t stay like this forever… Y-you can’t hold yourself in this situation— Soobin, you need to move on,” Beomgyu tried convincing him.

“No… I can’t… I love him so much. W-why did he leave me? No, I understand why… But I just want to see him and talk to him… I-I can’t just move on without knowing what really happened… Beomgyu, I c-can’t move on—“

“But you need to!” Beomgyu snapped. “You need to move on! Your life doesn’t revolve around him! Soobin he hurt you so bad! Please, please pull yourself together. Please Soobin, move on. Just accept the fact that he’s not going to come back anymore! Please! For your own sake, Soobin… Please help yourself too.”

That was the first time and the last Beomgyu yelled at Soobin like that. After that, Beomgyu makes sure that Soobin won’t remember Yeonjun anymore. He made him busy doing stuffs like baking and playing.

He helps Soobin moved on and when he’s finally seeing Soobin helping himself, he felt relieved and glad. Soobin’s moving on. Soobin’s moving forward and he saw it all. But sometimes, there’s still this instances that Soobin will look for Yeonjun.

When they are eating and he’ll just notice that Soobin’s crying silently then brushed it off as if it’s a normal thing then continue doing his thing. When they sleep beside each other and he’ll hear Soobin’s low sobs and when Soobin’s dreaming and mentioning Yeonjun’s name.

It hurts him. It hurts Beomgyu seeing Soobin being stuck in there and he can’t do anything but to comfort him. Yet despite of those, he stayed. He stayed for his friend because he knows he’s the only one Soobin got.

It took years before Beomgyu saw Soobin’s total healing. Soobin rarely mention or sometimes he don’t even mention Yeonjun’s name anymore. Beomgyu was so happy about that progress, it was slow but it was sure.

Beomgyu saw it all until this day that Soobin’s completely healed.

“Eat a lot! You have so many patients earlier?” Beomgyu asks and put meat on Soobin’s rice.

“Argh!” Soobin growls in exhaustion. “For real! But I’m glad about it. They need help and I’m so happy I can help them and see them getting healed. I can totally understand their situation,” Soobin replied and munch his food.

Beomgyu nods, “You really love your job?” he asks.

“Of course! It’s my dream after all. It’s so satisfying if you fulfill your dream—“ he paused when he remembers something and Beomgyu knows it. “Right! I forgot to tell nurse Kwon about the other patient,” Soobin diverted.

“Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! What an irresponsible doctor,” Beomgyu teases him and Soobin rolled his eyes at him so they laughed. “Sorry, doc!”

Beomgyu sighs inside him because he thought Soobin will bring it all back again but good thing, he didn’t. He believes Soobin’s already cool with everything.

“Where’s Taehyun by the way? I missed him! I hope he’s fine,” Soobin asks.

“Still in China, doing business stuffs,” Beomgyu replied. “He’s so busy, you know? And so I am but I just want to slack off,” he added.

“Jeez! A soon to be CEO who’s slacking off? What’s that?” Soobin teased him back and they laugh. "You should hire a personal assistant, Gyu," Soobin suggested.

"Should I? I don't know. I can handle myself," Beomgyu replied and shrugs his shoulders.

“Your doing great, Gyu!" Soobin complimented with giggles.

“You too, Binnie! Continue to help people,” Beomgyu smiles.

“Of course!”

After they eat, Beomgyu drop off Soobin to their house because he’s off duty for the next day. Soobin has his unit that’s closer to the hospital where he’s working but he chooses to go home today.

He lies on his bed and open the window above him to let in the cold air. He closes his eyes and breaths to calm himself for a minute. He then takes a seat and pulled the drawer to drink his daily vitamins. He opens the bottled water and drinks the pill but the cap slip off his hand and went other the bed.

He cursed and tried to reach it but he felt something different and he tried to get it then when he saw what it is. His whole self that he’s building up for the past year started crumbling again in just a matter of second.

It’s the red-black checkered tie that becomes a bracelet then a keychain.

He gasp for air and takes a seat, leans his back on the bed and look above the ceiling. He’s crying again. When everyone thought he’s finally well and already moved on, well it’s because he’s good at acting.

He’s a psychiatrist after all. He knows how to act and play on people’s mind because he studied all of it. He knows what to and he’s good at hiding his emotions.

It’s been ten years since everything happened. It’s been ten years when everyone thought it already ended. It’s been ten years and Soobin thought he can just forget everything and moves on.

It’s been ten years…

It’s been ten years and Soobin’s still in love with Yeonjun.
