5 Murders and 2 Losers
Jared tapped his pen on the desk, staring blankly at the floor as the teacher droned on about safety and how they should not be alone. He sighed, resting his head on the desk. The murders of high school students Jacob Reye, Sonya Web, Ethan Bitly, and Brooke Henderson had brought a slew of panic to the city, and a fear of a serial killer on the loose. The town had issued a 10 pm curfew for minors, not that Jared had any plans anyway. The bell rang and Jared closed his notebook. Tucking it under his arm, he headed to his locker. The hallway was quieter than usual because many students were at Brooke's funeral.Jared shoved his books in his locker and grabbed his backpack, throwing it over his shoulder. Jared turned around and ran straight into Connor, making the two of them crash to the floor. Jared had the breath knocked out of him as he landed on Connor. The impact of Jared landing on him made Connor's head bounce off the ground. Jared heard Connor cuss under his breath.
"Get off of me," Connor grunted, shoving Jared away. He held the back of his head with one hand. Jared sat up, gasping for breath.
"I was gonna apologize until you said that," Jared huffed, standing up and grabbing his backpack, which had slid across the floor. He didn't offer Connor a hand up, instead he walked off. Connor frowned, getting up and storming away in the opposite direction. His head throbbed with each footstep he took, but he didn't care. Connor burst through the front doors of the school, scaring two freshmen who sat nearby. He headed to his car across the parking lot, hopping inside. Zoe was at Jazz band practice, he didn't have to worry about taking her home. The car rolled out of the parking lot and Connor decided not to go straight home. Instead, he drove through the empty part of town, not really driving anywhere in particular. He turned up his music, banging the steering wheel with his hands and mumbling along to music. It was peaceful, there was no one else around and Connor enjoyed it.
After Jared's encounter with Connor he made his way to the cafeteria, where he nabbed a bag of chips from the back room. They were the oven baked, supposedly healthy kind, of course. Jared ate them as he walked to the far end of the parking lot where his car sat. He didn't trust anyone at school with it, even though it was a beat up, old red Jeep his father handed down to him. Jared jumped inside, throwing his backpack and chips onto the passenger seat, which was usually empty. He sighed, and headed home.
The next day was quiet, the teachers were forced to continue on with class, due to the tight curriculum. Those who were at the funeral the previous day were silent, and often were caught staring off into space. Not that the rest of the students were normal, those who didn't know her directly thought about the fact that it could've been someone they knew, or even themselves.
At the end of the day Jared headed out to his car. Standing next to Jared's red Jeep was Connor, who was examining a small black car.
"What are you doing?" Jared snorted, stopping a few feet away from Connor.
"Don't you smell that?" Connor gagged, pulling his shirt over his mouth and nose. Jared took a deep breath in, and immediately doubled over, choking.
"What the hell is that?" Jared backed away. "What's wrong with your car?"
"I don't know, I'm not even sure it's my car!" Connor replied.
"Here, let me check it out." Jared regretfully moved closer to Connor's car, leaning down and checking underneath the car. "I don't see any leaks."
"Good job, Sherlock." Connor rolled his eyes, his hand still clutching his nose. Jared sighed and glanced at his own car from the ground, from underneath his car he saw the decapitated head of a girl with glossy eyes staring back at him. Jared screamed, scrambling up.
"Jesus, what?" Connor jumped, his eyebrows raising.
"There's a girl," Jared pointed at his car. "She's under my car."
"What?" Connor repeated, sighing. Jared looked up at Connor.
"There's a head under my car."
