Jake sprinted through the woods at top speed. But when he made it to his den he stopped on his tracks and his heart skipped a beat.

The sight he saw in front of him was almost unbearable.

He growled and lowered his head close to the ground, showing his sharp teeth.

Then he reared up with his claws at the bird wolf that gave him trouble earlier.

Behind him was Safire, blood spilling from her throat.

"You bastard!" He screamed as Safire gasped for air. Jake lashed out, landing a blow on the side of its head. Then in his anger he tore through the wolves throat with his claws.

He left it to die and ran over to Safire. Her breaths were sharp gasps.

"Oh my god! Safire!" Jake stood over her with a horrified look on his face. She tried to speak but all that came out was gurgling blood. He knew there was only a small amount of time before she was lost.

He lowered his head in grief, "Shhh, don't try to talk..." Jake lied next to her, giving her comfort until she left him forever.
