Jaimathi and Raahini's companies collaborate Deepavali event had finally arrived, and the atmosphere was nothing short of enchanting. The soft glow of pastel-coloured drapes with lights illuminating behind it cast a soothing light over the venue. Delicate fairy lights twinkled from the trees, while oil lamps flickered in meticulously arranged spots, casting a warm and inviting light that felt almost magical. It was a perfect blend of modern elegance and festive tradition, the fusion music performed by local artists setting the perfect tone for the evening. The gentle rhythm of tabla beats and guitar strings filled the air, adding a unique, contemporary vibe to the night.
The displays of JM Spices and Puthu Vannam Threads were stunning, designed to catch the eye of every guest. Products from both companies had been arranged artfully, showcasing each in a way that was both elegant and understated. Guests murmured their approval as they moved from table to table, admiring the creativity and seamless blending of two industries.
"Everything is so well done."
"The pastel colours are such a refreshing change, don't you think?"
The murmurs of praise flowed through the crowd, and for a brief moment, Lathika allowed herself to breathe. After a week of tension, long nights, and constant battles over every little detail, the event had come together beautifully. She had to admit, despite the rocky start with Prashanth, they had managed to pull off something special.
But as she wandered through the event, checking in on guests and making sure everything was running smoothly, a familiar voice sliced through the air, halting her in her tracks.
"Well, well, look who's here."
Lathika's heart sank. Her body went rigid as she turned, already knowing who she would see. Tara stood before her, dressed to perfection and smiling with the kind of guiltless confidence that made Lathika's stomach churn. She's not supposed to be here, Lathika thought, the realization quickly followed by a wave of anger.
Tara was not on the guest list. She had not been invited. Did someone from my team told her about the event? Or is she keeping a track on my work? The thought of betrayal stung, but now wasn't the time to deal with it. Right now, she had to handle Tara.
Lathika forced herself to remain calm, but the tightness in her chest betrayed her. "Tara. What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice low but steady.
Tara's smile widened, as if she enjoyed the discomfort she was causing. "Oh, I just couldn't resist," she said, her voice dripping with mock innocence. "I heard you got yourself a project and I had to see for myself how you're doing, Lathika. You know, after everything."
The words hit like a slap. Lathika's hands tightened into fists at her sides, her breath catching in her throat. "Everything? You mean, after you stole my projects?"
Tara laughed softly, the sound cold and unbothered. "Oh, come on. You can't be that naive, Lathika. It's not personal—it's business. And clearly, you couldn't keep up. You were falling behind, and someone had to pick up the slack."
Each word dug deeper into Lathika's heart, the wound still fresh from losing her biggest clients to the very person she had trusted. She had nurtured Tara, given her opportunities, and now she stood there, taunting her as if it were all a game.
"I wasn't falling behind," Lathika said, her voice shaking with barely contained anger. "You undermined me, Tara. You went behind my back."
Tara tilted her head, her smile still firmly in place. "I simply saw an opportunity. You were too slow to adapt, Lathika. That's the reality. Clients want fresh ideas, and you were stuck in your old ways."
Lathika's throat tightened, she wasn't going to let Tara see how much her betrayal had hurt. She wasn't going to give her the satisfaction. But the pain was there, gnawing at her, mixing with the rage bubbling inside her. This event, this night, was supposed to be a victory—a moment where she could prove that she could succeed despite the odds. And here was Tara, threatening to tear it all down.
As Lathika fought to maintain her composure, Prashanth, who had been quietly observing the crowd from a distance, noticed her. He had seen the shift in her posture, the way her shoulders had tensed, and the tightness of her movements as she spoke to a woman he didn't recognize.
Curiosity piqued, he made his way over, moving through the clusters of guests until he was close enough to overhear part of the conversation.
"You've lost your edge, Lathika," Tara continued, her voice dripping with disdain. "That's why your clients are leaving. You're not evolving."
Prashanth's brow furrowed as he neared, noticing the strained look on Lathika's face. She was standing rigid, her anger barely concealed beneath her calm exterior. He didn't know who this woman was, but he could sense that whatever was happening wasn't good.
"Is there a problem here?" Prashanth asked, stepping up beside Lathika, his voice steady and calm.
Lathika glanced at him, surprise flashing in her eyes, but she didn't speak. Tara, on the other hand, raised an eyebrow and looked Prashanth up and down.
"And who are you?" Tara asked, her tone dripping with condescension.
"Prashanth," he replied, meeting her gaze without flinching. "Representative of one of the companies. Is there something going on that I should know about?"
Tara's smile returned, though it was thinner now. "Ah, so you're the one working with Lathika. That explains a lot."
Prashanth glanced at Lathika, who hadn't said a word, but her body language told him everything he needed to know. Whoever this woman was, she wasn't just making idle conversation.
"And what, exactly, does that explain?" Prashanth asked, his voice growing colder.
Tara shrugged her confidence still intact. "Oh, nothing much. Just that Lathika seems to be struggling with keeping up in the business world. I'm sure you've noticed."
Prashanth's eyes darkened. He didn't know who this woman was or why she was trying to tear Lathika down, but the sheer arrogance in her tone made something in him snap.
"Actually, from what I've seen," Prashanth said evenly, "Lathika is doing just fine. In fact, I'd say she's one of the most capable people I've worked with. But it sounds like you're the one who's insecure—if you have to come to someone else's event just to rub salt in old wounds."
Tara's smile faltered for a split second before she regained her composure. "I don't need to explain myself to you," she snapped. "This is business, and Lathika clearly doesn't understand how it works."
Prashanth took a step forward, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous tone. "No, what you're doing isn't business. It's petty. And if this is how you operate, I'd say you're the one who doesn't understand how to be a professional."
Tara's face hardened, and for a moment, it seemed like she might say something else, but she bit her tongue. "Enjoy your little event," she said sharply, turning on her heel and walking away without another word.
As she disappeared into the crowd, Prashanth turned to Lathika, his expression softening. "You okay?"
Lathika let out a shaky breath, her shoulders relaxed. "Yeah," she said quietly, her voice thick with emotion. "I'll be fine."
Prashanth studied her for a moment, sensing the vulnerability beneath her calm exterior. He hadn't known about Tara or the history between them, but he could see how much the encounter had rattled Lathika.
"You don't have to deal with her alone," he said softly.
Lathika managed a small, grateful smile. "Thanks... I appreciate that."
For the rest of the evening, Lathika remained on high alert, her mind swirling with thoughts of Tara and the realization that someone in her team had tipped her off. But tonight wasn't the time to investigate. She would handle it later.
They stood there for a moment, the tension of the night easing between them. Though Prashanth had no idea who Tara was or the history between them, his instinct to stand by her had surprised them both. Perhaps they have really gotten warmed up.
