Chapter 2. Memory Lost
"We are still planning on getting an apartment together after graduation, right?"
I closed my eyes briefly and let out a sigh as my boyfriend poked his head around my locker. I glanced at him in confusion, "Why wouldn't we be planning to do that still?"
"Just making sure," he grinned as he closed my locker for me and slung his arm over my shoulders.
It was 3:30pm-- meaning classes were done for the day and we were on the move to go and investigate Alex's supposed abandoned home. Scott had texted me and said he would meet us by the jeep since this took place after school he was down to be a part of it. I wish Lydia would give the situation a little more grace and try to be involved, I'm sure her banshee abilities would come in handy.
Stiles was buzzing with energy, he was clearly excited that something supernatural was finally stumbling into our laps again. He pushed the doors open to the quad and gave my shoulder a squeeze, "Our apartment is going to be great. I already have some ideas for the living room."
"Do I even want to know?" I asked hesitantly.
He nodded, "Uh, yeah. It's your future home of course you want to know."
"As long as it's comfortable and functional, whatever you want is fine by me." I said with a small smile.
Living with Stiles after graduation was something I could day dream about for hours. When we finally do get out of Beacon Hills we will be able to start our life together and I cannot wait to see what kind of non-supernatural and non-life threatening adventures we can go on together. I want to do so many things with him and once we graduate we will have the freedom to see the world together.
Stiles grinned, "It's going to be so fun. I get to start and end everyday with you."
"You do that now," I chuckled.
"Yeah but it'll be different because it will be starting and ending every day with you in our home." He said matter of factly.
As we approached the jeep Scott waved us down, "Come on, let's get going. I have to finish that psych paper tonight."
Stiles rolled his eyes, "I hate that he has turned into a responsible student."
"Well one of us needs to be," I laughed.
✧ ✦ ✧
"That's not creepy at all..." Stiles mumbled as we stood in front of Alex's house.
Okay, so the officers were definitely not lying when they said that the address Alex gave them led them to an old abandoned house. The windows were dirty and there were visible cobwebs on the other side of the glass from the street. Scott handed Stiles a flashlight and we made our way up the driveway to the front door.
I quirked an eyebrow, "You think the doors locked?"
Scott shrugged, "Only one way to find out."
He twisted the doorknob and the door then slowly squeaked open. We stepped into the house and immediately I could smell the dust and the musty smell of dirt that had been sitting for a long period of time. I looked around and noticed there was a dining room table with a few chairs that had table settings in front of them, but they were covered in cobwebs. The windows had yellow dingy curtains hanging in front of them and fireplace was nothing but cobwebs matted together across the mantle.
Scott looked at Stiles and I, "Want to split up?"
"Uh, absolutely not." Stiles responded a little too quickly.
I sighed, "We can split up. You two head upstairs and I'll look around down here."
Scott nodded, "Okay, come on Stiles."
Stiles looked at me uneasily, "Be careful and if you start to feel weird or your ability does something weird come find me."
I smiled faintly, "I'll be okay."
"Stiles, come on." Scott called from the stairs as he began to ascend them. Stiles nodded and then jogged up the stairs after my brother.
My feet carried me across the living room as I scanned my surroundings for anything that would make sense of why Alex would give this house as his address. It's obvious from looking at this place that nobody has lived here for along time. I looked at the walls and noticed there was some fading on the paint in the shapes of squares and rectangles-- almost like picture frames had been there before.
I turned around and went back to the dining room and saw that the table settings I had just seen when we arrived were gone-- in their place were clean circles in the layer of dust on the table top. I touched the dust and rubbed it between my fingers, it's definitely real. I wish I would have talked to Alex before we came over here, I could have asked some questions about his house and maybe gotten some more information from him.
Footsteps outside the front door drew my attention and my head snapped to the side, I could hear two people approaching the house. Scott came down the stairs at the exact moment I heard the footsteps and he looked at me, "You hear that too?"
I nodded and turned back towards the door to see who would be showing up to an abandoned house but as I turned the corner out of the dining room I about ran smack into Liam and Mason.
A loud gasp tumbled out of me as I glared at them, "What the hell are you two doing here?"
"How did you know we'd be here?" Scott asked as he approached us.
Liam held up a small golden compass, "This is where the compass led us."
"What compass?" Scott asked as he took the compass out of Mason's hand.
I peered over Scott's shoulder and saw that the arrows in the compass were spinning like crazy. I don't understand exactly how a compass works but I do know it's not supposed to do that.
"Why is it doing that?" I asked Mason.
He shrugged, "I have no idea."
Liam held up his phone and pulled up the compass app, "They're all doing it."
Suddenly a loud crack of thunder boomed through the house. I jumped, startled from the loud noise, and Scott looked at me in confusion, "You okay?"
"You didn't hear that?" I asked as I looked between Scott, Liam and Mason.
Liam made a face, "Hear what?"
"The thunder.. you didn't--" I was cut off by a loud thud from upstairs.
My stomach dropped and I flew up the stairs without wasting a second. I found Stiles in the corner of the hallway with his arms braced over his face like he was shielding himself from something. I quickly went over to him and crouched down beside him, gently grabbing his arms, "Stiles? You okay?"
He moved his arms and his eyes danced around wildly as he scanned the hallway. He let out a shaky breath as he grabbed a hold of my arm nervously, "He was here. The man on the horse. I saw him. He shot at me."
Scott, Liam and Mason were now approaching us and they all looked concerned. Scott helped Stiles to his feet and frowned, "What happened?"
"That guy that Kasey saw in Alex's memory. I saw him." Stiles said as he turned to look at the door to the room directly behind him.
He traced his hand over the wood slowly, "He shot at me.."
"You saw the guy who took Alex's parents?" Mason asked slowly, because it did sound kind of crazy. The hallway didn't have any evidence of anyone being there, but I believe Stiles.
He shook his head from side to side, "They weren't just taken. They were made to disappear. That's why there is no furniture. That's why they weren't in any photos. They were erased."
Scott then barged into the room behind Stiles and sighed in defeat. I saw that the room was empty and shrugged, "It's empty just like the rest of the house?"
"Except it wasn't empty 30 seconds ago," Stiles said as he stepped into the room, "this room was fully furnished when I was just in here."
I swallowed the lump that had just formed in my throat, "So that means I was right... they are coming back for Alex."
✧ ✦ ✧
"You called?"
I looked up from the table in the library where I had books sprawled out in front of me, to see Lydia walking towards me. Stiles and Scott had assigned me to research duty since I have seen this guy and with my ability, they figured I had the best chance at figuring something out. After they dropped me off at school, they ran to the Sheriff's station to check on Alex. Scott has Lacrosse practice tonight so they will be back soon.
Every book on supernatural creatures, folklore, fairy tales and even mythology that the Beacon Hills library has to offer is on this table in front of me.
"Thank you for coming," I sighed as she plopped into the chair across from me.
Her eyes scanned the table and she raised an eyebrow, "What are you looking for?"
"I don't know," I breathed out in exasperation, "whatever I saw has got to be in one of these books, right?"
Lydia blinked once before folding her arms on the table and looking at me seriously, "Kase.. are you still driving yourself crazy about this?"
"This isn't just a memory anymore, Lydia." I said as I closed the book in front of me in frustration, "This is real-- that man I saw is real. Not to mention that the overwhelming crushing fear and extreme hyper vigilance that has been running rampant in my brain, tells me that my ability is trying to warn us."
She nodded slowly, but I could tell she still didn't believe me, she was trying to be nice. I narrowed my eyes, "You still don't think this is something serious?"
"If it is, I don't think it's something you need to solve right this second." She said in a tone that resembled my mother.
I know she is worried about me and wanting me to take care of myself but her lack of belief in the situation is really starting to bother me. We have been through so much together, I know that she can feel what I feeling. We have a connection and a bond that nobody can understand, so why isn't she trusting that.
"You can't feel what I feel?" I demanded as I gestured to myself, "You can't feel this anxiety? You can't sense that something is off?"
Lydia shook her head from side to side, "Kasey, I don't feel anything other than concern for you. I believe that you believe what you're feeling is real, but I can't feel it, I'm sorry."
"I don't believe that," I argued, "Lydia, you have got to have felt or heard or sensed something."
She shrugged, "I do have this song stuck in my head that literally came out of nowhere today.. and I swear I've heard thunder but the skies are always clear. That's it."
I stood out of the chair in a flash, "Thunder? I've heard thunder, too! What's the song?"
"I don't know, I don't recognize it but I scribbled it down in class earlier because I couldn't get it out of my head." She explained as she fished a notebook out of her bag and handed it to me.
Give this man a ride,
sweet family will die.
Killer on the road.
I don't recognize it either. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and typed the lyrics into Google, hoping that it would give us some clarity. The search pulled up a song called Riders on the Storm. I turned my phone towards Lydia so she could see the result, "You know this song?"
Her eyes widened and I could instantly see the wheels in her head turning. She looked at me like she had seen a ghost, "Kasey, that's it."
"What's it? Wait-- you figured it out?" I asked as she began to search the table for a book.
I watched as she grabbed a large well worn brown book and began flipping through pages until she landed on one with a picture of cowboys on horses that resembled the man I had seen nearly to a T. She turned the book toward me, "The Ghost Riders. The Wild Hunt. They come by storm, riding horses. And they take people."
"Just like Alex's parents." I breathed out as I took the book from her and looked at the photo. The Ghost Riders in the photo were in midair on their horses with a green and blue smoke behind them. The rider's had people wrapped up and thrown on the back of their horses. I skimmed the page and the last line read: Those who see The Wild Hunt beware, for you are already lost.
"Already lost?" I repeated as I looked up at Lydia.
Her eyes filled with fear, "You don't think that means something will happen to you, do you? Since you saw them in Alex's memory?"
Since you saw them.
Lydia's words echoed around in my brain and I dropped the book on the table as my thought process finally caught up-- I didn't see them, but Stiles did. He said he saw the Ghost Rider at Alex's house and he shot at him.
Those who see The Wild Hunt beware.
Stiles is next.
Already lost.
All of the feelings from my ability-- the anxiety, the hyper vigilance. It was trying to warn me about Stiles.
Oh God.
The realization clicked together slowly in my brain as I scrambled for my phone. Is he still at the police station with Scott? Can I get to him in time?
"Kasey?" Lydia asked in concern as she watched me panic search for my phone.
I looked at her helplessly, "Stiles-- he saw them, I have to find him."
My feet were moving before I could register that I was moving but I didn't get far before Lydia snatched my wrist, "Find who?"
I yanked my wrist away and stared at her, my eyes wild with fear, "Stiles! I have to find Stiles!"
Lydia stood there and stared at me blankly and my stomach dropped. Did they already take him? Does she not know who he is? Oh my God.
I was already running as she opened her mouth to question me further. I have to find him. My heart was slamming violently against my ribcage as the soles of my shoes squeaked against the library floor. I rammed the double doors with my shoulder and made my way to the parking lot. My fingers tapped against my phone screen as I found his contact, I hit the call button and put it on speaker as I continued to run.
"I'm sorry, the number you dialed--"
I didn't even give the automated voice time to finish before I ended the call and shoved my phone into my back pocket. I was starting to hyperventilate as I rounded the corner of the quad but I had to skid to a halt as I crashed into someone who was running out of the administrative building.
Familiar arms wrapped around me in the collision and my body responded before my brain could as I pulled him into an embrace.
Stiles.
"Oh God. Kasey? Do you know me?" He asked, his voice distraught.
My hands went to his face and I nodded, "I know you."
He pulled me in a tighter embrace and kissed the side of my forehead, "Oh thank god, you know me."
I was breathing erratically as I said, "I think people are forgetting. Lydia-- she forgot your name."
Stiles nodded, "They're coming for me. We have to go."
Thunder boomed in the sky and I jerked as I spun around, half expecting to see the man on the horse behind me. I glanced at Stiles and I could tell by the look on his face that the Ghost Rider was behind me. I grabbed a hold of his hand and held it tightly, "You see them, don't you?"
He swallowed thickly and glanced around, "They're surrounding us. Kasey, they're coming for me. You have to get as far away from me as you can."
"I am not leaving you." I stated defiantly.
Stiles' eyes met mine and I could see the fear pooling inside of them, "Okay, then we have to go. Now!"
We started running.
I let him lead because he could see the Ghost Riders but I couldn't. We were weaving around on the sidewalk as he tugged me along, going straight for his jeep. Can we out run them if we just drive and keep on driving? If we leave Beacon Hills will he be safe?
As we got to the jeep we broke apart and clambered inside, slamming the doors and locking them. I watched in a panic as he keyed the ignition and tried to get the jeep to start. Just as he was about to turn the key, he froze. I blinked rapidly and nudged him, "What are you doing? Stiles, we need to go. We need to go now!"
Stiles pulled the key away and turned to face me, "There is no time. They have the jeep surrounded, Kase."
I could feel bile clawing it's way up the back of throat as the fear of Stiles being taken began to consume me. I snatched the keys out of his hands and went to start the jeep myself, leaning over him. He grabbed my wrists and steadied me, "Hey. Listen to me. They're gonna take me and I'm going to be erased."
"No!" I shrieked as I tried to key the ignition again, I will not lose him.
Stiles put his hand over the ignition and then cupped my cheek with the other, forcing me to look at him, "You're gonna forget me, Kase."
I shook my head from side to side vehemently, "No, I won't. I won't. I can't, Stiles. I can't--" my words were lost in my sobs as I folded in on myself and grabbed the collar of his flannel with my left hand while I squeeze the crap out of his key's in my right. I can't lose him. I can't lose Stiles.
He tipped my chin up to look at him, "Find some way to try and remember me if you can. Remember how much I love you. Remember our first kiss. Remember how you saved my life. Remember me, baby."
"I will," I promised as pressed my lips to his. I could feel his tears fall and land on my cheek and just as quickly as the kiss happened it was over as he pulled back and pressed his forehead to mine, "I love you, Kasey."
