~Chapter 1~
Equines galloped at top speed through a dark and rainy forest, their hooves splashing through the murky muddy water of the forest ground. Their white capes flowing behind them. All of their eyes filled with the same thing. Hate and Determination.
"Moment of truth ponies! Whether we secure this as Ponykind's first stronghold beyond the walls, or die trying!" The commander of the group shouted.
They approached a clearing-like space in the thick forest, spotting, for just a second, a tall, pitch black figure with purple scales was teetering towards them. But a second was all they needed.
"Target approaching!" One yelled.
"Split into five groups, now! Group one will act as bait, all other groups, engage Three Dimensional Maneuver gear!" The white unicorn commander yelled.
The ponies flew off of the ground and into the trees on their grappling hook-like gear. You could hear the shouts and 'Zzips' of the ponies in action.
The commander of the group flew up to the back of the giant being, pushing a button on his hoof couplets, extending his swords.
"For my brothers!" He yelled. "For Equestria!!!" He shouted, going into a vertical spinning attack to the back of the neck.
~*~*~*~*~
Tia awoke with a start. She rubbed her eyes and looked up to see Rainbow Dash crouching over her.
"Huh, Dash? Where are we?" She asked groggily.
"Try asking me again when you're awake." She replied, standing up.
Tia stretched out her violet purple wings and shook the grass out of her lime green hair.
"That dream...it felt like it was going on forever..." She trailed.
Rainbow Dash walked over to the saddlebags filled with wood. She strapped one on her back and looked back at Tia.
"Tia, why are you crying?" She asked.
~*~
Tia and Rainbow made their way back to their home.
"You don't have to tell anyone I was crying..." Tia said, looking down.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. But if you don't know what you were crying about...maybe you should tell your dad about it." Dash suggested.
"Right, because tearing up is usually a medical thing." Tia said gruffly as they entered the gate.
"Why are you crying, Tia? Rainbow Dash mad at you again?" Said a guard at the gate.
"Neon..." Tia said.
Neon Lights was a gray/blue unicorn pony with lighter black hair. He was a part of the town guard.
"What are you even talking about!? Agh! You reek of alcohol!" Tia said, covering her face with her wing.
A group of three guards were sitting at a box, drinking alcohol and laughing heartily.
"Of course..." Tia sighed.
"If only tears were cups of ale!" A white unicorn mare with blue hair and purple sunglasses laughed.
"Aren't you guys supposed to...be guarding the gate?" Tia asked.
"Yep! Guarding the gate we are! Makes you thirsty! I don't see what's wrong about drinking a little something to keep us going" He explained in a drunken manner.
Tia barred her teeth angrily.
How do you expect to fight if you're so loose on your hooves!?" She yelled.
Neon looked at her bluntly.
"Now why on earth would I have to fight?"
"Duh! When the walls are attacked!" She growled loudly, stomping her hoof.
Only silence could be heard throughout the area.
"Listen kid, don't yell stuff like that out loud." Neon whispered.
The white unicorn mare walked over to Neon.
"You've got some spirit! But listen Nightengale, If the walls are attacked, we'll do our jobs. Ok?" She said, face red from the intake of alcohol. "But it's been at least a whole century since the last breach!"
"But you still have to be prepared for whatever comes your way!" Tia exclaimed.
"Well...I guess your right..." Neon said, looking thoughtful. "But listen here," He said, crouching down and lowering his voice, not to be heard by other ponies. "I sometimes see them when up I'm there Y'know? When I'm repairing the walls and stuff, right? And I'm pretty sure, they're way to small to get over a wall 50m high!" Neon laughed.
"So what you're saying is, you don't have any will to fight the dragons?" Tia asked.
"Precisely." Neon confirmed.
"W-what!? But you're a soldier! That's your job!" Tia yelled.
"But when ponies see soldiers fighting, they get scared." Neon explained. "That's why it's better if we sit here and do nothing all day. If the soldiers are content, so are the other ponies."
Tia broke eye contact and stomped her hoof again. "I know...but we are practically cattle behind this pen we call a wall!" Tia argued.
Neon looked taken back, but The white mare and the other guards laughed. "You sure have some mouth for a kid your age!" A different guard laughed.
"Can't do much 'bout that, can ya?" The white mare laughed, elbowing Neon.
"Right..." Neon said.
Tia sighed at pushed past Neon, followed by a still silent Rainbow Dash. Neon watched them leave. Now...She doesn't possibly want to join the Resistance Force... He thought, but pushed the though away. I doubt it...
~*~
Rainbow Dash and Tia walked home in silence, until Rainbow broke it.
"Tia...I think you should forget about joining the Resistance Force." Rainbow said quietly, not making eye contact.
"They aren't dumb like Neon and his gang!" Tia defended.
"I never said they were dumb." Rainbow said.
Just then, the sound of bells ringing could be heard in the distance.
Tia' s face lit up immediately. She grabbed Rainbow' s hoof, pulling her along. "C'mon Rainbow Dash! They've returned! The heroes are back!"
Ponies all gathered on the sides of the street. All with a grim look, but Tia was oblivious to this.
"I can't see!" She said, jumping into the air to get a better view.
She caught sight of some boxes. She ran over to them and jumped on the highest one. Rainbow Dash jumped on a smaller one.
Tia could now see the ponies with their white capes with yellow suns.
One saw Tia' s overjoyed expression and turned his head to look at the ground. Tia saw this and started to take into account the current happenings, smile fading. Most of the ponies had their hoods up, covering most of their faces. Ones who didn't have their hoods up, had bandages covering their eyes and head. Some of them were even pulling wooden wagons with the fallen soldiers of the Resistance Force.
"Why are there so few?" A pony in the crowed asked.
"They all got eaten or burned to death." One replied.
"That's what you get for going outside of the walls." Another said.
"Derpy? Derpy!" A older mare called, walking up to the commander. "Excuse me sir, but have you seen my daughter? I don't see her."
The commander's eyes filled with guilt and sorrow. "It's her...Derpy' s mother. Bring it here." She ordered one of the men.
"Yes Shining Armour." A soldier muttered, bringing something covered in a white cloth. He handed it to the mare. She took the cloth with wide eyes. She slowly unwrapped it to reveal a light gray, blood smudged wing. The mare' s eyes filled with tears and she started crying.
"I'm sorry...it was also we could recover." Shining Armour said grimly.
The mare took the severed wing and held it close to her, as if her beloved daughter. She lowered herself to the ground, crying all the way.
Shining Armour bent down to get closer to the elder mare.
"...Sh-she h-helped though...right? H-helped us all get closer?" She sobbed. "Sh-she may not have b-been a hero...b-but...please tell me she did!" She wailed.
Shining Armour' s eyes grew wide. "Of course she did!" He replied quickly, but changed tones very quickly. "No..." He said grimly. "During this mission...No...during all of the missions! We've don't nothing to get closer to finding anything out about the dragons! I'm a failure! All I do is get ponies killed!!!" He screamed.
~*~
The crowd started to go about daily business as the last of the Resistance Force disappeared out of sight.
"That was heavy." A colt sighed.
"Tell me about it. All we're doing is offering ourselves to soldiers just to be...Dragon crisp?!" A different colt exclaimed quietly.
This conversation reached Tia' s ears.
"And that's not a-" He said, getting cut off by Tia whacking him in the head with a piece of firewood.
"What the-!!!" He exclaimed, turning around to see Tia with a stick in her mouth, winding up for another swing.
Rainbow Dash grabbed her saddlebag with her mouth and dragged her away from the colt before she could hit again.
"R-Rainbow!" Tia yelled, trying to get away from Dash.
Rainbow Dash threw her against a brick wall. The saddlebags came undone and firewood spilled everywhere on the dirt road underhoof.
"Ow! Look at all this wood!" Tia grumbled, rubbing her head.
Rainbow looked at her, expressionless.
"Do you still want to join the Resistance Force?" She asked.
Tia didn't make eye contact as there was a long silence.
"Just...help me clean this up." She muttered.
~*~
Tia and Rainbow Dash made the rest of the walk home in silence.
They walked up the road to their house. Their house wasn't anything special, just wooden with a few glass windows.
"We're back." Tia called, entering the house.
"Welcome home!" A yellow mare with reddish pink hair and wings greeted. Her Cutie Mark was a rose. This was Tia' s mother.
A light brown stallion with messy darker brown hair turned around from his work at the table, giving them a welcoming smile. His cutie mark was an hourglass. Tia' s father.
Tia walked over to a chest along the wall and dumped all the wood that was gathered. Her mother walked over.
"That's a lot of wood you gathered today! I'm very surprised. You've hardly ever gathered this much before!" Her mother praised.
Tia didn't make eye contact. "Um, sure." She replied.
Her mother bent down and poked her in the side. "Your feathers were ruffled. Rainbow helped you again, didn't she?" She said with a knowing gaze.
Tia looked away, embarrassment taking over. She felt guilty that Rainbow Dash would always do her work for her. She knew Rainbow Dash didn't mind and she'd do anything for Tia, but Tia always felt guilty about it.
The girls joined Tia' s father at the table. They started to eat the food her mother had placed on the table. Tia realized her father wasn't eating. He was placing things into his saddlebag.
"Heading out dad?" Tia asked. He nodded. "Business trip. I'll be back in a few days." He replied, his accent showing.
Tia nodded in understanding. Rainbow was still silent. Looking down at her untouched food.
"...Tia wants to join the Resistance Force." She said bluntly.
Tia looked betrayed. "Rainbow! Why would you tell them!"
Her mother rounded the table and bent down and held Tia by the shoulders.
"What are you thinking, Tia!?" She exclaimed. "Do you know how many ponies die in the Resistance!?"
The image of the dead ponies on the wooden wagons flashed through Tia' mind.
"Of course I do!" She replied defiantly.
"You apparently don't!" Her mother yelled.
"Tia?" Her father asked. Her mother was shocked at his calmness. "Why do you want to join the Resistance?"
"I want to know what it's like out there. I want to understand more about the outside. Plus, if nopony fills the place of the old Resistance Scouts, they'll have died in vain!" She replied, full of determination to make her point.
The stallion searched her eyes. "I see." He said, getting up from his spot at the table. "I must leave. My ship is here." He said, strapping on the saddlebag and putting on his long brown overcoat.
"Dear! Help me convince her!" She pleaded.
"Rose," He replied, standing in the doorway to face his wife. "Nothing can deny a pony' s curiosity. Tia," He addressed his daughter. "If you behave, I may let you in on what's in the basement." He said, taking out a golden key that blunted in the sunlight.
Tia gasped with excitement. "Really?"
Ever since she could walk, Tia has wondered what was in the basement. Now she had the chance to know!
Her father walked out to the empty dirt street. Tia followed and stopped in front of the house. "Have a safe trip!" She called.
They all stepped outside and watched as Dr. Nightengale disappeared out of sight down the dusty road.
"I won't let you." Rose replied bluntly. "I simply won't let you. I can't have you joining something as stupid as the Resistance Force."
"S-stupid!? The ones who live inside these walls all their lives are the stupid ones!" Tia exclaimed, turning to run down a different road.
"Tia!" Rose called after her, but Tia ignored her.
Rainbow went to follow her, but was stopped by Rose. "Rainbow Dash. Tia is very sweet, but can be reckless. Please, please! Promise me that you will protect each other. Keep one another alive if the time ever comes." She pleaded.
Rainbow nodded one solemn nod. "I promise."
~*~
Menacing laughter echoed through the alleyway.
"What's wrong with you?" A voice said, words filled with smugness.
An orange Pegasus filly with purple hair had a pink earth pony with darker pink hair pinned against a wall. "Fight me back if you want to prove your point!" She pressured.
The pink earth pony filly gripped at the pegasus's fore-leg in attempt to loosen the grip, but the effort was futile. "Why in Equestria would I do that?" She asked, glaring up at the bully with defiance in her icy blue eyes. "I'd never stoop down to your level." She said, grimness in her voice.
The larger filly pushed the pink pony against the wall with more force. "Say that again! I dare you!" She yelled.
Her two friends where behind her, smirking at the helplessness of the smaller filly. One was a white unicorn filly with purple and pink swirls in her mane and tail. The other was a yellow earth pony filly with read hair and a large pink bow.
"You can't help but know you're wrong! That's why you're beating me up!" She exclaimed.
The three stared at her in bewilderment and confusion.
"You're beating me up, but that just proves you're wrong! You resort to violence whenever the time gets ruff. You can't live life with your fists." She said.
"Shut up with you're psychological crap!" The Pegasus yelled, raising her hoof for another blow. The pink pony cringed, awaiting the pain.
"Leave her alone!" A voice echoed down the alley.
The three bullies stopped and turned to see Tia running down the alley. The Orange Pegasus dropped the pink earth pony, causing her to fall to the ground in a heap.
"Look! It's Tia!" The unicorn filly laughed.
"Looks like she's back to get beat up again!" The Pegasus said smirking, raising her hooves for a fight.
"What a idiot!" The yellow earth pony sighed.
The unicorn' s eyes widened as she saw another figure running close behind Tia.
"Buck! Rainbow' s with her!" The yellow filly shrieked.
"Run!" They all turned and ran out of sight down the alleyway.
"They...they ran after seeing me!" Tia panted victoriously, still tired from running.
"No, they ran after seeing Rainbow Dash." The pink filly explained as she tried to stand up. As she shifted her weight, one of her fore-legs gave out, causing her to stumble back to the ground.
Tia and Rainbow Dash turned to look at her.
"Are you alright Pinkie Pie?" Tia asked, outstretching a hoof to help her get up.
Pinkie Pie looked down at the ground, her hair deflating a little bit from its normal poofyness.
"I can get up myself." She sighed.
"Right...Sorry." Tia said.
Pinkie rose to her hooves and they all three started walking down the deserted alley.
~*~
"...and then I told them that it was highly unlikely that the walls would hold forever, and we would all have to move out someday...then they started to beat me up." Pinkie explained sadly.
The three fillies where sitting on the edge of a river bank. The river was a wide one. You could fit a boat or two on it to carry passengers from one wall to the other. It also wound around town, giving everypony drinking water.
"Everyone thinks we're crazy just because we want to go outside these bucking walls!" Tia exclaimed, kicking a stone as hard as she could into the water.
"Well...some ponies think that the Dragons will get in when somepony tries to leave...So they made it a law not to go outside of the walls..."Pinkie replied sadly, looking out into the smooth surface of the sheen blue water.
"We're the ones risking out necks! We should be allowed to leave whenever we feel like it! The government can't stop us!" Tia exclaimed discouragedly.
"Don't do that..." Rainbow said suddenly, looking into the water without making eye contact. "Don't." She repeated.
"Why would you even tell my parents?" Tia whined, stomping her hoof.
"We never agreed to keeping it a secret." Rainbow Dash replied, still not looking at Tia.
"What did they say?" Pinkie Pie asked with an intrigued look.
"They didn't take it very well..." Tia replied.
"I figured as much." Pinkie said with a sigh.
The three looked out to the water.
"I don't understand why ponies think that the walls will hold forever." Pinkie Pie sighed.
The sun had just set over the walls. It was hard to believe what life would be like without them.
"Still, although they've held for a hundred years...they still could break at any moment in time." Pinkie finished.
The three girls looked at the water in silence. Behind them they could hear the sound of fillies and colts playing. The water had a golden sheen to it as the last of the suns rays sparkled on it.
Just then, a giant crack of lightning was seen just outside of the wall. The ground shook with the huge BOOM! that followed, sending the three girls falling backwards.
"W-what was that?!" Pinkie exclaimed in bewilderment, scrambling to he hooves.. "Did something explode?!"
Pinkie Pie watched as some of the townsponies ran in the direction of the crash.
"What happened?"
"Did they misfire?"
Pinkie saw them run, and she followed.
"Pinkie Pie!" Tia called, but she didn't listen.
The other two girls ran after her. They found themselves with many others.
The bustle of the crowd had stopped. Only silence was heard. Then, the worst thing that has happened in 100 years happened. A giant red claw rose up and gripped the wall. It gripped it so hard, it crumpled under the clench.
"You're kidding! That wall is...50m high!" Pinkie exclaimed shakily.
A giant red head, scaled head rose over the wall. Smoke bellowed from its slightly opened mouth.
"It's them...the Dragons!" Tia marvled, to scared to scream.
The giant Dragon raised one mighty leg and let loose a powerhouse kick.
Ponies screamed and ran as rocks and broken parts of buildings destroyed everything and everyone in range. Ponies went flying through the air, being thrown by the mere force and aftershock of the kick. Everypony was screaming, running, or trying to pull out the dead or dying bodies of loved ones from under the debris, except for the three girls.
Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash turned to see Tia slowly stumbling toward the destruction and chaos.
"Wait! Tia!" Pinkie Pie yelled.
"Our house is in that direction...mom was alone..." Tia's shaky voice was just heard over the yells, as she took off running.
Rainbow Dash followed.
"Rainbow!" Pinkie yelled, extending a fore-leg longingly wanting the ponies to come back. She pulled her extended fore-leg back to her teary eyed face. Her hoof was covering her mouth slightly. "It's over...The Dragons are in...every...every last pony....Will be devoured!" Pinkie exclaimed, letting a few tears go.
Tia and Rainbow Dash ran down the street. They saw people dying and grieving. They ran down a long road that made a T at the end.
"Our house will be fine! I'm going to turn this corner and our house will be there! Just like always!" Tia thought desperately.
They turned left at the corner and saw their house crushed by a giant boulder. Tia and Rainbow' s eyes widened with fear.
"MOM!!!" Tia screamed.
They came into view of her. She was crushed under a beam of the house, half of her body out. She opened her eyes at the sound of Tia' s voice.
"Rainbow! Grab that end of the beam and lift with all your might!" Tia ordered.
They struggled in vain to lift the beam off of her. Then, there was a loud stomping noise. A blue Dragon had noticed the three. It's scaley lips were pulled up in a permanent, twisted smile.
Tia' s mom had sensed it, for she wasn't facing the direction of the Dragon.
"It's them..." She muttered.
"Hurry up, Dammit!" Tia screeched, looking down at her bloody hooves, splintering against the wood.
"I'm trying!" Rainbow' s voice quivered desperately.
"Tia! Run! Just take Rainbow Dash and Run!" Her mother ordered.
"I want to more than anything right now! But I need to see you on you're hooves first!" Tia exclaimed, struggling harder.
"Tia, this beam has crushed my hind-quarters...even if you could get me out, I couldn't run..." Her Mom said sadly.
Tia sat in shock, but was quickly overcome with anger and persistence again.
"I don't care! I'll pick you up and carry you with me!" Tia yelled, tears in eyes.
"Will you just shut up and listen to me for once!!!" Her mother yelled.
Both of the girls were shocked by her tone, but continued struggling.
"One thing I ask! One thing! Rainbow Dash! Make Tia go!" She yelled.
Rainbow Dash looked down, tears spilling out of her eyes. "I can't!" She cried.
"Do you want all three of us to die?" Tia' s mother asked, voice wavering.
A zzzip! noise could be heard as Neon had swooped in on his TDM gear.
"Neon!" Tia' s mother yelled, relieved. "The the girls and get them out of here!"
Neon bent down to her level. "Now Rose, that's not a good way to think." He said with a small smile as he took of running down the road with the Dragon slowly teetering closer.
"No! Don't do it!" Tia' s mom begged.
"No fancy stuff. Just take it out, get all three to safety." Neon told himself, drawing his swords. "Make good on the debt you owe!"
He stopped in his tracks as he came close to the Dragon. It stared at him with it's mismatched eyes.
He clenched his jaw and pushed the buttons on his metal glove-like hoof coverings, drawing the swords back into them.
He turned tail and ran back to the three. He scooped up Tia and Rainbow Cash and placed them on his back.
"PUT ME DOWN YOU BASTARD!!!" Tia yelled, beating her hooves on his back, trying to be let free.
"Thank you." Her mother said relieved.
"I LOVE YOU!!! YOU HEAR ME?!" She yelled, tears flowing down her face and outstretching a fore-leg towards the running Soldier with her children on his back. "STAY ALIVE!!!" She ordered.
She slowly clasped a hoof over her mouth.
"Don't leave me..." She cried almost silently.
She felt the ground shake as a Dragon stood behind her. The Dragon dug through the debris and hoisted her into the air.
All Tia could do was watch the Dragon take her mother. She sat wide eyed in horror.
The Dragon picked her up and brought her closer to it's, now open, mouth. Rose banged her hooves on the scaled claws of the Dragon, though, showing no result. The Dragon brought her closer to it's mouth, until she was halfway inside.
Rainbow Dash turned away, unable to watch, but Tia couldn't stop. She watched. It felt like time slowed as the Dragon bit down, sending Rose' s blood flying through the air, and spattering on the dusty dirt ground below.
