Chapter 1

Steve woke up to the soft sound of rain hitting the tin roof. A quick glance outside revealed that it was still too dark to be morning, but the moon had already started to disappear.

Pressed against the wall on their small shared bed, Sam was still fast asleep. Rolling over, however, revealed that Natasha was nowhere in sight. He blinked at the empty bed and pushed himself into an upright position. Wanda was out with Vision for the weekend so her absence wasn't worrying, but Natasha should have still been sleeping.

Trying not to wake up Sam, Steve climbed off the bed and tiptoed out of the room. He pulled the curtain closed behind him and looked around the cramped living area. As far as he could see without a light, there was still no sign of Natasha.

"Nat?" Steve whispered, blinking quickly.

The room was just as empty once his eyes had adjusted as it had been when they weren't. Frowning, he pried open the door to look through the surrounding forest only to reveal Natasha standing two steps away. She didn't have a flashlight and the forest was too dark to see into, but it looked like she was watching something in the trees.

"Natasha?"

She flinched at the sound, something Steve hadn't expected. He'd thought she'd heard him come out, but apparently not.

"What are you doing out here?" Steve asked.

There was a pause as Natasha opened her eyes. She looked out into the forest then down at her soaked clothes as if just realizing she was outside.

"It's raining," she said, lifting an arm and letting the water drip off of it.

Steve nodded and took two steps forward so he was standing right beside her.

"Yes, it is," he replied, raising an eyebrow. "Why are you standing out in it?"

"It's relaxing." She pushed her wet hair out her face and closed her eyes again, a small smile creeping onto her face.

"It won't be after you've got a cold," Steve told her.

Natasha merely shrugged before returning her attention to the forest.

As often as he complained, he knew that Natasha could always be found outside when it rained. It was one of the few things that hadn't changed since they'd gone on the run and at the very least, Steve appreciated the consistency.

They fell silent as the rain continued to fall. The combined sound of the rain hitting the roof of their makeshift shelter and the trees overhead was, in fact, relaxing. At some point, Natasha started to sway. Steve watched her with a small smile until suddenly she stopped.

Turning to Steve, she held out her hand and told him, "Dance with me."

With a roll of his eyes, Steve took her hand in his and wrapped his other around her back. Once satisfied with their position, Natasha led them through a smooth waltz that only she seemed to know the tune of.

For what it was worth, Steve thought his dancing her improved considerably since the first time she'd dragged him out into the rain. He no longer stepped on her toes, but he never took the lead. That was for Natasha to do since she seemed to know what the music called for.

"You're going to be sick tomorrow," Steve told her, spinning her around then pulling her back in.

"It's worth it." She grinned. "Besides, what else do we have going on?"

"Sleep."

At the sound of Sam's groggy voice, they turned towards the door. Sam blinked blearily at them and rubbed at his face.

"What time is it anyway?" he grumbled. "Shouldn't we all be curled up inside, dreaming about sugar plums, guns, or whatever else?"

"It's almost 4AM." Natasha's hands dropped from Steve's and Steve refused to acknowledge the irritation he felt towards Sam after being interrupted. How was Sam supposed to know to leave them alone?

"Then why in Odin's name are the two of you out here dancing like we're in a scene from the Sound of Music?"

"No one's making you join us," Natasha said bluntly.

"So I can go back to sleep?" Sam asked, looking at the two of them. "We aren't racing out of here because Ross found us?"

"Yes, Sam." Steve nodded. "You can go back to sleep."

Sam didn't need to be told twice before he was headed back inside.

Even if Steve had wanted to stay out with Natasha, the moment had come and gone. They stepped inside after Sam, but while he ducked into the area sectioned off for their two cots, Steve and Natasha stayed in the living space.

"I'm going to get Wanda," Natasha told Steve quietly. "Vision messaged me. Something's come up and he needs to leave."

"I'll come with you," Steve offered, but Natasha shook her head.

Stepping through the curtain, Natasha grabbed the first jacket she saw and returned to Steve as she said, "Stay here with Sam."

Steve was about to object more but she shushed him with a sharp look.

"We'll be fine," she promised. "Just make sure there's a fire going when we come back."

"Are you bringing back food as well?" Steve asked. Although none of the stores would be open when she reached the town in an hour, he knew she had numerous traps set throughout the forest that provided them with food fairly regularly.

"No," she replied, slipping the jacket (that happened to be Steve's) over her shoulders. With a knowing smirk, she said, "I don't want to get sick from the rain."

Before Steve could come up with a retort, she was slipping out the door and into the dark forest, pulling the jacket hood over her head and leaving the two boys behind.
