Dark War

Midnight strands tangle, tossing in the wind
Icy eyes linger, watching from the hill.
The moon shines, glimmering dark,
The stars obscured by clouds.

Far off, amongst the trees,
The lonely hoot of an owl sounds.
A river winds across the plain
Sparkling, splashing, sweet.

Then, sudden, the sound of galloping hooves,
Pounding through the valley.
Eyes turn, cast upon the horses
Riding swift and dark.

A battle cry, and then at last,
The tension overflows.
Crashing sounds echo around,
The hooting owl flies away.

A scream, and then another one,
Bodies fall away.
Empty saddles ride away
Into the dim dark night.

Until at last, the dawn returns,
Lighting the bloody battlefield.
The battle's won, but the war's not over
Will it ever end?
