Another Rant?
WireRose: I kindly ask you to do a rant on Musical Scenes
Um..... okaaaaay?
Soz...
First off, I hate how Mrs Newton always changes the time we get out. I mean, I guess it's sometimes nice to be let out early, but then she expects us to be gone in like 10 mins when my parents weren't even expecting me to be let out that early so they're not already on their way and it takes longer. Also, it's a pain in the ass, mostly to them, because they have to leave whatever they're doing, race over to get me, then figure out what to do. It's annoying, and she should give us one set time and if there's extra time we can play theater games, make ourselves useful, do homework, etc. But if it ALWAYS takes less time than she scheduled, then just shorten it! I'm tired of my parents asking, "When do you want me to pick you up?" and I have to respond with "I don't know, I'll tell you when I do" then not text then till five minutes after we're let out and tell them for sure. It's just stupid.
Another thing: A few years ago, if you weren't in musical scenes, or weren't involved at least, like volunteering, you couldn't be in the musical. It made me feel special, it was easier to cast everybody, and it's like saying to the others, "Well you didn't take the initial leap, so now you can't do it." That shouldn't annoy me, but it does. That's not the main issue. The main issue is that someone like me, who has been doing the musical for three years, gets stuck in the ensemble, while someone new to the school or just to the musical walks in and immediately gets a good spot, a secondary spot, but a named role nonetheless. Favoritism much?
The time commitment. In the fall musical scenes, it's not bad. Once to thrice a week depending on how many scenes you're in and on which days they fall. But the actual musical is pretty much everyday. I am a busy girl. I did crew this fall, along with musical scenes, I will do ski club, and I also wanted to do debate team and possibly chess club, but the musical doesn't allow me to do much in the winter, including winter training for crew. It's a lot of work to keep up, especially homework. As we get closer to the musical, rehearsals start running towards 5:30, 6. This is especially a problem with high school ski club. Normally rehearsals begin by going to 4:30 , but on Fridays that's what time skiing club starts. It's tricky to manage and balance out.
So the year before last, Mrs Newton was out for most of the year due to medical issues. The year she came back , we did Rock the Hilltop instead of musical scenes, where only half of the show is scenes but they're rock songs . And honestly? I hated it. It was not as good as musical scenes , and that's not just because I thought we sucked. It wasn't as enjoyable either.
Did I mention how tiny the stage was? At least compared to another stage in a different school I performed on.
My last point is probably my biggest. Anyone who knows me in real life knows I rant about this a lot. THE. F*CKING. SOUND. The f*cking sound in that auditorium is so sh*tty! First of all, the acoustics of the aud that comes from its shape are really bad. The sound doesn't travel the way it's supposed to. It's supposed to project towards the curve of the room and reflect down at various spots over the audience so everyone can hear and the sound doesn't bounce back over itself an echo a lot. But the shape of the wall curves so that the sound bounces back at us, overlapping on itself and creating poor resonance, which only serves to amplify our screwy sound system. They say we're getting an upgrade, but I don't see a huge improvement. We only have four very good mikes, and the rest aren't as reliable. It sucks so bad, like they're turning off, not working, then the sound crew doesn't know when to turn people's on and how loud it should be, like we have several loud people who could get by without one and give it to a quiet person instead, even though the sound crew wouldn't turn theirs up anyways.
Sorry it was so late, and I swear I fully intend to update Pyra this weekend. Remember to leave more questions and dares for me. Have the best day ever! Hobey ho, let's go!
