Eyes are a lot easier to draw than talons in my opinion. 

And they're a LOT easier to draw on a smaller scale, which is why the vary last eye is this example looks better than the others...

If you look online or have books to look at, it defiantly helps. I use the WOF books as examples for myself, since they look nice and are easy to draw.  

Simple version...

I feel like sometimes eyes also might need a stroke of creative luck, depending on what you're doing and how exact you want to be.

It also depends on your style and what you find easy to draw.

Animal eyes are also good to reference! I would also reference dinosaur eyes if you could find pictures

Honestly just have fun though, use references and tutorials to find/make your own style!
