Behind closed Doors
To anyone else passing by, it might seem like just another fantasy being acted out. But I know better. Someone had intervened and now something terrible was happening in that room.
A few moments of deafening silence pass, and stillness fills the air. My legs feel unsteady beneath me as I turn to walk away, but something compels me to stop. I stand frozen, staring at the closed door in front of me. Without thinking, my hand reaches for the doorknob and twists it open, my heart pounding against my chest.
As the door swings open with a loud creak, my nerves are on high alert. Still, I push back the fear and step into the room. The sight before me is chaos. Shattered glass covers every inch of the floor. A once sturdy table now lays broken in half. I can't help but wonder what could have caused this destruction.
My eyes scan the room, taking in every detail. The fabric on the couch is torn apart, claw marks marring its surface. Blood splatters decorate almost every surface, sending a shiver down my spine. Fear and unease begin to creep over me like a dark cloud.
I slowly turn to face the right side of the room and my stomach churns at what I see. There lies the man who had attacked me earlier, his body almost shredded to pieces. Despite the gruesome sight, I feel no sympathy for him - only a sense of relief that he will never hurt anyone again. It's a shock to realize that I am not filled with remorse at his grisly fate.
A low, guttural sound startled me, making me jump. I spun around to see a dark figure on the other side of the room, barely moving and taking deep, labored breaths. As I cautiously approached, a growl erupted from his throat, stopping me in my tracks.
"You're not human," I stated matter-of-factly.
"What gave it away?" His rough voice held a sarcastic edge.
"Maybe the growl," I retorted, feeling a surge of courage that I didn't know I had.
"Why did you save me?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Why do you always find yourself in dangerous situations?" He countered.
I furrowed my brows in confusion at the word "always." Summoning more courage, I stepped closer and saw them – his piercing grey eyes. The man from last night had saved me yet again.
"You...you're the man from last night," I said aloud, and his silence confirmed my suspicion.
"You're injured. Why aren't you healing?" Concern laced my voice.
"We all have our weaknesses," he cryptically replied.
My mind raced back to all the books I had read about supernatural creatures. The growl – could he be a werewolf? And what were they weak against? Silver. Suddenly remembering something I had read about silver cures, I grabbed a shard of glass from the floor and knelt down next to him.
"What are you doing?" he asked with confusion etched on his face.
Then, for the first time, I saw his face clearly – tan skin, sharp jawline covered in black stubble, a perfectly shaped nose. Thick eyebrows framed intense grey eyes, and his lips were full and delicately pink. Time seemed to stop as I took in his striking features.
"H-helping you," I stammered nervously.
"Why?" he questioned again, leaving me at a loss for words.
"Why did you save me?" I turned the question back on him, and once again, he remained silent.
"How do you know how to help?" He finally asked.
"I...I don't know if it will work. I just read about silver poisoning and how blood from someone pure of heart can weaken its effects long enough for you to heal," I explained awkwardly, suddenly feeling foolish for even attempting to help.
"Are you sure you're pure of heart?" His questions were starting to irritate me. "Is that all you do – ask questions? Can't you at least tell me what to do?"
Instantly regretting my tone, I realized I had never snapped at anyone like that before.
"You don't have to cut yourself. I'll have to bite into your wrist. It's going to hurt, but it won't kill you," he warned me.
Feeling a wave of fear wash over me, I put down the shard of glass and scooted closer to the enigmatic man. Holding out my wrist, I braced myself for the pain, knowing that he had saved my life twice now – it was the least I could do to return the favor.
