*Chapter Sixty One* {The Reckoning}

*I hate this chapter but I hope you enjoy it, lol... I couldn't find a way to make it good.. I feel like it's choppy and weird and not as good as others but I needed these scenes to get to the next ones which will be better! Next chapter will be better, promise!*

"You're back," Rebekah smiles, walking to meet with Stefan. "Finally. Nik and Enzo went to check on the witch,"

Alvina and Jeremy shared a look that goes unnoticed. Rebekah walks right into Stefan's arms and pulls him into a kiss. Alvina and Jeremy return to the loveseat.

"Dreary, isn't it?" Rebekah asks, as Stefan eyes the coffins containing the rest of the Mikaelson's.  "The family cargo,"

"Why don't you undagger them?" He wonders.

"Because he would hunt me down and kill me," Rebekah explains. Stefan growls and tightens his hold around her. Rebekah smiles at him with a lovestruck expression. "He's a vindictive little bastard, my brother,"

"But you still care about him... Why?" Stefan asks.

"Well, I hated him for a long time... It was exhausting," She admits.

"You know, when I met you two, you were both on the run," Stefan brings up. Alvina tightens her hold around Jeremy knowing if Stefan wasn't careful things could escalate.

"Also exhausting,"

"Who were you running from?"

"What do you mean?" Rebekah asks.

"Last night I saw you, there was a man looking for you. You both seemed afraid. I just... I wouldn't think Klaus would be afraid of anybody,"

"No one in this world is truly fearless, Stefan. Not even Niklaus," Rebekah tells him.

"Who was that man?" Stefan presses.

"I can't... Please," Rebekah says, moving away from him. Stefan follows after her. "If Nik knew we were talking about this, he would..."

"Come here," Stefan mutters, reaching for her wrist. She lets him pull her to his chest. He looks into her eyes and sees genuine fear. "I'm sorry," He whispers, brushing his fingers over her cheek to tuck some hair behind her ear. "Forget I asked, ok?"

"He told me about the girl you loved," Rebekah mentions. "The one that died. He also told me that you're only with him because he saved your brother,"

"It's true," Stefan tells her truthfully.

"I think he secretly admires that about you. You'd sacrifice anything for family... Don't tell him I told you that," She whispers with a soft smile.

"Your secret is safe with me," Stefan grins, kissing her forehead.

"Do you think you'll ever love me like you loved that girl?" She whispers, fear setting into her chest. His eyebrows instantly frown.

"My love for her disappeared the instant I remembered you," He says, grabbing her face with both hands. "You're my life, Rebekah. I won't let your brother or anyone else separate us again," He vows before passionately kissing her.

"There's something else, isn't there?" Rebekah asks, when they pull away. Stefan frowns his eyebrows again. "You're hiding something from me, I can feel it,"

"I'm not-"

Rebekah cuts him off and steps out of his embrace.

"Don't lie," She snarls. "I know you, Stefan... Probably better than yourself," Her arms cross. "We used to tell each other everything and now you're keeping something from me? What is it, Stefan?" She snaps but before he could respond Enzo and Klaus march in.

"Gloria's gone. She's cleared out. We need to find a new witch immediately," Klaus states before slowing to a stop. He sees his sister and Stefan in a stand off. "What's going on?"

"He's hiding something," Rebekah snaps. "He was asking about Mikael, too," She adds. Klaus growls and goes to attack him but Rebekah flings him away. Enzo is by his side in a second and Alvina moves to stand in the path between Rebekah and her mates.

"Rebekah," Klaus growls a warning as he stands up. He marches past Enzo but stops by Alvina when Rebekah snarls at him.

"You took decades from us, Nik," She snapped. "You don't get to hurt him," She then spins around to Stefan. "But I will if you don't come clean,"

"Rebekah, I'm not hiding anything," Stefan insists. Alvina rolls her eyes wondering when Stefan would be able to convincingly lie to someone's face.

"Tell me the truth!" Rebekah shouts. Giving into his anger, Klaus moves toward Stefan again but Rebekah growls at him.

"Elena's alive," Jeremy blurts. Everyone freezes and slowly looks at him. He was as shocked as they were that he had said that out loud but he felt as if he couldn't keep the secret a second longer.

The tensions were just continuing to skyrocket. Jeremy knew a fight would break out between Rebekah and Klaus. He knew they wouldn't hurt kill each other but Enzo and Alvina would get involved, they weren't as indestructible.

"What?" Klaus asks, his fists clenching. Jeremy stares at the ground.

"Elena's alive," He whispers knowing everyone could hear him.

Alvina looks from Jeremy to Klaus. She wondered if his teeth would shatter from how clenched they are. She couldn't imagine what was going through his mind. She knew he'd see this as a betrayal, which it was but with good intentions.

"Elena?" Rebekah asks. "The doppelganger?" She asks but the answer was obvious. Her eyes land on Stefan again. "Why didn't you tell me?" She growled.

Rebekah understood the secrecy before he regained his memories but if he was truthful about no longer loving her then why keep the secret?

"I don't love her anymore," Stefan insists. He goes to continue his explanation but ends up on the floor with a snapped neck. Rebekah snarls at him furiously.

"We're going to Mystic Falls," He declares before leaving everyone behind.

As he left he felt as if he was vibrating with anger. As he thinks back on the past few months the fact that everyone was keeping this a secret was obvious. He simply passed it off on Stefan's usual brooding and his mates reluctance to accept him. Now he understood.

The drive back to Mystic Falls was tense. Rebekah occasionally glared at him for hurting Stefan. Alvina would glance at him with different emotions each time. Jeremy refused to look while Enzo would stare with an unreadable expression.

Stefan didn't awaken until they arrived in town. From there they commandeered a vacant house. Once they were inside Klaus disappeared.

Alvina sighs softly and leads Jeremy by the hand to a room. Enzo follows and closes the door behind them. Once in the privacy of the room Jeremy breaks down.

"Shh, I've got you," Alvina whispers, guiding his head to her neck. She threads her fingers through his hair while Enzo presses up behind him.

Jeremy had trouble expressing the reasoning behind his break down. After months of tension everything is now in vain. He could not only lose his sister again but now he felt as if he is going to lose Klaus before he actually had him.

Downstairs, Stefan approaches Rebekah. She's looking at herself in the mirror making it obvious she's ignoring him.

"I don't love, Elena," Stefan says. Rebekah continues to ignore him. "I didn't tell you the truth because I couldn't risk Klaus finding out. I gave people my word to keep it a secret," Rebekah turns toward him.

"You're making this up to me," Rebekah warns him. "And if you lie to me again, you'll learn the true meaning of hell," Stefan smiles and walks up to her.

"I'm sorry," He whispers, pulling her to his chest.

"You're lucky you're cute," She mutters, snuggling in his chest. He smiles and kisses the top of her head. "Is Jeremy..."

"Elena's brother," Stefan explained. Rebekah pulls away.

"Oh," She muttered. "And Nik 'killed' her," Stefan nodded. "Which is why none of them are mated to Nik by now,"

"Exactly," Stefan says. "Doesn't stop the excruciating awkwardness and flirting and tension," He grumbles as he thinks back on the summer.

"Aww, poor baby," Rebekah teases. Stefan smiles, lifting her lips to his.
