Hello everyone!

I am going to update most of the book now, and so there won't be any more authors notes before chapters, unless I think it's necessary. I hope you enjoy the book and have as much fun reading it as I had writing it! :D

Chapter 9

Cordelia’s POV

A man dressed in a fancy grey uniform came strutting in, followed by two heavily built men that looked like they were on steroids.

“Welcome to The Grey Area, I am your Commander and I hope you’ve enjoyed your stay so far” he said with fake cheeriness.

“Oh yes, no food or water, my hands are numb from being tied back so long, I had a very uncomfortable night, but apart form that I enjoyed it immensely.” I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

“Good” he replied, and cut the bonds tying my hands together. Suddenly he said “Chuck her in boys”.

Hands grabbed me and I was propelled into the water. Moving quickly, I twisted around so that I landed on my hands. “Yes!” I thought, “My legs aren’t wet!” I looked up and realised that the pool was much deeper than I thought and my legs were in fact, under water.

I braced myself for the strange feeling of my legs suddenly disappearing and my tail replacing them.

I had a red top and my tail was bright red at the top, which then graduated to gold. I was the odd one out in my family – everyone else had a blue tail that graduated to silver. My nickname was ‘Flamefish’ and my friends and I often wondered if that was why I was able to light fires under water.

I swam to the surface and flicked a large amount of water at the Commander. He glared angrily at me and said, “You’ll pay for this.”

I laughed and swam around the small pool, relishing the feeling of water around me, and being able to swim again.

The Commander examined me as I did this. Then, as if he had decided something, he clicked his fingers and I was hoisted out of the water.

“Let her stand”, he said.

The two men holding me above the floor by ten centimetres suddenly dropped me and I collapsed on the ground, as my tail could not hold me up.

I looked around for something to dry my tail so that my legs would re-appear. I saw a shirt and instantly started to slither over to it. One of the men saw what I was doing pulled me back by my tail and held me upside down.

I crossed my arms and stuck out my tongue. I was then dropped again and I slipped over at an odd angle injuring my elbow.

Again and again and again I was dropped, pushed over, and beaten until my legs dried and they replaced my tail. By this time I was black and blue, and in a bad condition.

The Commander left and the same girl took me to a laboratory.

My face drained of its colour. It seemed like the tests were about to begin.
