Chapter 6

Gary’s POV

“Ah. Home sweet home.” I thought. The three-metre high cement fence, lined with barbed wire loomed in front of me. Finally I could be back to my normal job at The Grey Area.

We focus on making the world a much better place by eradicating those who threaten our perfect world. They try to convince others that things should be different.

This is why I grabbed the fish. Because she’s different.

I drove over and showed the armed guard my pass. “I’ve got some fragile cargo to deposit, if you know what I mean”.

She grinned, “Take it to block E16, Examination complex”.

“Sure thing”.

I then drove off in the direction of E16.

As I was driving I passed the schoolrooms, full of grey clad children. Their hair was all done in the same fashion; tied back in a grey ribbon for the girls, and shaved for the boys.

I’d spent six years in those schoolrooms and the message I’d recited every day was still clear in my mind: For the world to stay peaceful we need to stay the same. We need to work together and eliminate those who threaten our perfect world.

We then neared E16. I’d never been there before and so I looked with interest at my surroundings.

E16 was off limits to all but those with the highest ranks. People’s faces were cold there, as if nothing could ever stop them from doing what they wanted to.

I showed them my pass and said, “I found the fish”.

They spoke into their radios hurriedly, suddenly rushing around. One took over my van saying “I’ll take it from here, 198394” in a cold, hard voice.

I had forgotten that we were literally bar-coded there. When we join The Grey Area a number is tattooed onto our wrist. We are then called that number for the rest of our lives.

All of the evidence of a life before The Grey Area is destroyed. As soon as you join, The Grey Area becomes your family. I haven’t contacted mine since I joined when I was twelve.

I have spent eleven years of hard, gruelling work and now all that had been taken away from me, along with the fish.

Vexed, I angrily marched back to my ‘house’.

Needing all the room in The Grey Area, the Commander only gave us a small cement box for our home.

I jumped onto my bed and sighed, wondering what my life would be like if I hadn’t joined The Grey Area.

Hmm... Is Gary having mixed feelings about what he is doing?

What will happen to Cordelia now?????

Tell me what you think!
