Chapter 2

Cordelia’s POV

Ok let me explain. I do not always have a tail, only when my legs are wet do I ‘change’. The upper half of my body can be completely drenched, but as long as my legs are dry I’m ok.

Due to my friends throwing me into the water at parties I have the uncanny ability to walk for long amounts of time on my hands.

They noticed that I never swam with them, and they knew I could swim because I snuck out every morning to go swimming.

I went to a secret underground pool that only I knew about. (I discovered it when I went exploring a couple of years ago; it has tunnels going up to it, their entrances hidden by masses of seaweed). But of course that was when it was still safe for me to live in the sea.

I grew up as a mermaid and lived under the sea and on a beautiful tropical island. No satellite can find it and no human being can ever trace it. This is because Morwenna is protected by ancient magic, only allowing sea creatures to enter.

My father is the King of Morwenna. My name literally means ‘daughter of the sea’. Pretty fitting huh? I have four sisters, Lana (as calm as still waters), Ondine (little wave), Ara (brings rain) and Shasa (precious water). My mother though disappeared eleven years ago, when I was nine.

I never followed my father’s instructions, always running off exploring with my friends, Otto the shark and Bo the dolphin. We were always doing stupid things such as messing up the newly raked sand art, disturbing the class of little ones or setting fire to the food while underwater. (Don’t ask me how, I really don’t know).

It all started when I was exploring with Otto and Bo and I noticed a peculiar fish that I had only seen ten kilometres away from home.

I touched it and instantly felt that it was not alive. Curious I broke it in half and saw a camera. Destroying it quickly I took it to my father (the King) but it was too late. They had already discovered our position.

I was then sent to tell everyone else to go onto the island, ‘change’ and if they saw any more fish to destroy them without being seen. There was chaos everywhere, with merpeople swimming in every direction camouflaging their houses, collecting important possessions and leading their crying young to the safety of the island, singing to them. (We only communicated by singing underwater, which allowed us to talk to all underwater creatures).

As I had already been seen, I stayed behind destroying all of the cameras I could find. Just as I had broken the last one a submarine came up out of the deep.

Startled I shot away with the high-powered submarine chasing my tail (quite literally). I lost them quickly (as I can swim very fast) but then stopped suddenly as I realised:

1.   It was pitch black.

2.   I was completely alone.

3.   I could not go home, as it was no longer safe.

It turns out that even though I knew where I was (we merpeople know where we are in the world as long as we are touching water) I had no idea where to go. It was no longer safe for me to be in the water, so I had to go out of the water.

We had a house on a beach in Sydney for when we wanted to take a holiday on land. And I’ve stayed there ever since.

I’m an athletic girl, small but I have an air of confidence around me letting others know I’m not a girl to be messed with. My skin though, looks like it had been drained of colour, so much so that it looks blue. My face, also snow white, is freckled and sunburnt – which was not at all surprising as it is summer in Australia. It is framed by a mass of fiery ginger hair, which clashes surprisingly well. I have crystal blue eyes and a piercing stare that takes in everything around me. My naturally red lips complement my hair and as I am a usually smiley person, I show off my perfect white teeth quite a lot. But now they were definitely not showing.

I still had to find my way out of this maze without being seen.

I sighed, got up and started creeping to my home. I tensed up every few minutes, thinking that I had heard something or seen a shadow.

When I finally got home I was exhausted and stumbled into my beach side shack instantly collapsing onto my warm fluffy bed.
