Chapter 1: Stranger Danger
CHAPTER 1
After being homeschooled, which is because she can not bear to go to school anymore, Adela liked to go to a lake she used to go to with her dad. It was a good place for her to think, but lately, the lake felt empty, like something was missing. That missing thing was Adela's father, his warm smile, and the shine in his eyes, but now the only sound she could hear was the flow of water. Her father was probably the most wonderful human being in the world. Now, whenever she came here, she felt weird, like someone was watching her. She had no idea why, but there was some strange presence in the lake now. It didn't feel as pure as it did before.
It felt just creepy and uncanny. Like some bizarre things might be there, never mind. Adela did have a massive thing for making things up, and it was probably nothing. There was a beach near the lake, where they used to swim together, and she remembered building sandcastles. She remembered playing volleyball on the sand and consistently winning, but now she knows that they let her win.
When her father passed away, she never knew how. One day, the day that he left her life forever, her mother Elizabeth told her that he had died in a car accident, and she honestly did not believe her.
At least, she did not want to. She sometimes also came here to think about her twin brother to maybe make sense of his disappearance, too; however, she didn't remember her brother. She remembered him dying of leukemia, but even that was a foggy memory. She did not know what it felt like to have a brother. There was nothing to think or feel about. Since they were only ten and then her brother just left her life. Just like her father did, no one wants to stay in her life. Everyone wants to leave and never come back. She only had her mother. She just remembered her brother to be a troublemaker whenever he was around, or that is what her mother told her.
A lot of the time, it felt like her mother did not even care about her. Adela thinks that her mother blames her for what happened to their family. How it broke into pieces that can not be fixed. No matter how hard she tries. No matter how much she was, her mother loved her again, as she did before. She would not even talk to her about her day or come to the lake with her. She misses those days. She did not even care anymore. Adela likes to be alone now, and it is acceptable for her to be. Eventually, she will move away from the house she lives in and find a place for herself. Get away from all the bad memories, and get away from an unloving mother.
Adela's personality changed when her father died, and her cheerful, bubbly self turned into a dull, stubborn 18-year-old who tried hard to keep all her emotions in and not let anyone see them. She used to be the leader of the soccer team and played the guitar but still does play from time to time. Not as much as before. She used to have many friends, but she now has no interest in anything aside from thinking about everything wrong with her. Honestly, she blames everything on herself, as does her mother. In some ways, that is what Adela thinks.
The sound of dripping water interrupted her thoughts as the sky turned from a rosy pink to a bland grey. Water started falling from the sky and onto Adela's cheek and then onto her nose when she looked up to the dark sky.
Adela decided not to stay any longer, and it would be an excellent time to go home before she got drenched. She got up and gathered her books and put them in her bag. She thought it was weird that it was raining, since it never did, not even near lakes and beaches. She wanted to spread her arms around and dance in the rain. Well, that would be the old Adela. The old Adela was free-spirited and was someone who hadn't a care in the world, but now she had every care in the world. The new Adela would be someone who would watch the rain from inside her room, wishing it would stop.
Quickly, she gathered her books and shoved them into her bag, but her books got a little wet she frowned, and before they could get completely soaked and she would from the rain. She ran home to make sure she kept dry, but the rain went from only light rain to raining harder and pouring down with no stopping. How she wished she brought an umbrella, but it was odd how there was no sign of a thunderous rainstorm. Just as she reached the street sign that read 'Angel Demon Drive.' Adela always found her street name weird since when she did have friends, they could never find her street, let alone her house. Also, she barely talks to anyone anymore, making friends is something that she still likes to do, but it's hard for her since now that she's homeschooled, she can not. She did graduate, though, with really good grades. Even though some days she enjoyed the rain, she began to run to her house, but today was one of those days.
For a split second, the rain stopped and started again. Out of breath and on the doorstep of her house, Adela whispered, "Home" as she let herself in, but is this really "Home"?
When she was inside, her stomach growled, but she didn't eat. She would wait until her mom was home and ate with her. Adela's house was empty. What would a typical teenager do in an empty house? Throw a raging party where dozens of people were there. What would Adela do? Think about how to put her life back together, then give up and repeat. It felt like there was no point in trying for her; she had loved her father so much that sometimes it was hard to understand why he had left.
Her house was honestly the most basic house you could ever see. The sofas are black, so black that you could get lost looking at them. There is a television but very tiny and probably was made a long time ago. They did not have TV like other people had they were all flat screens. It's not even like she even ever wanted to watch it. It was black and white movies. She would rather play her guitar and write songs. Doing this distracts her from thinking about things when she does not want to think about them. Then, there is a picture of the family on top of the fireplace. She looks at the picture and sees herself smiling. It's with the whole family, her brother, her father, her mother and her on the beach. She is surprised that her mother even has a picture like that, a picture that shows happiness, a picture that makes her smile every time she sees it. The walls are white in every room, only then there is Adela's room, which is painted sky blue with ocean animals on it because she loves the beach and ocean. She painted her room with her father. But now she thinks it looks childish. She has had white furniture since she was a child. Even today, she just likes how it looks. You would say for someone as sad as her to have everything black, but now she likes everything white. That would seem odd to a lot of people. Now, though, she loves these rainy days, but she only loves them from the inside.
"If only you came back." Adela whispered to herself, then she said, "This empty, sad-looking house would then shine again. It would shine brighter than it had before."
Adela always tried to remember the day her father and her brother had left her and her mother's life to figure out why. Since she thought her mother was not telling her the truth about what had happened. It was getting hard to remember every time she tried.
(FLASHBACK:
"You need to leave, I do not want you near me, children anymore . You have already done enough. All you do is wreak havoc on this family, I don't even know why I ever loved you," cried Elizabeth.
"I was fixing your mistakes. You're the one who sent Jordan away, and now he is gone somewhere doing who knows what," Asmodeus said.
"Well, he had to leave, he is your son, not mine," Elizabeth responded with stubbornness, "Ever since we got married you have been with who knows how many women, and you have been gone for days and I only know what you're doing."
"You have destroyed so many things doing that, including our marriage and Adela's life. She is only ten and has no clue about anything," Elizabeth said.
"You're the one who did not want to tell her. She deserves to know who she is." Asmodeus replies.
"No, she doesn't yet and not from you. So leave. I am telling you this last time before I drag you out." Elizabeth said with stubbornness.
"Fine, I am leaving, and I am never coming back." Asmodeus sees Adela, and he still leaves slamming the door.
When they were talking, they did not see Adela watching them, but then they did see her when Asmodeus left. Elizabeth went to her and said, "Adela, what did you hea.."
"I heard you and dad fighting about something. Was it about Jordan? Is he coming back?" Adela asked
"No, honey, he is not, I am sorry," Elizabeth said to Adela in a soft voice.
"What, where is Jordan? Please bring him back. I miss him and his magic tricks." Adela said.
"Magic tricks? Did he show you magic?"
"Yes, and it was very cool. He taught me how to do it, except mine is different from his."
"Show me what he taught you," said Elizabeth strictly.
"Okay, but he only taught me one spell. This one."
She then starts chanting a severely dangerous spell.
"Daemones tolle..." (Translation: Take away the demons.)
Elizabeth stops Adela from finishing.
"Why did you stop me?" asked Adela.
"Honey, how many times did you tell you to do the spell?" demanded Elizabeth
"About five times." Adela whimpered.
"Then it is fine. You just need to do it one more time for it to work."
"What does that mean, Mom?" asked Adela, confused.
"It is nothing honey, just sit down, we need to do something."
"Wait, where is Father? Where did he go!"
When Elizabeth turned back and looked out the window, Asmodeus was already gone.
"I don't know, honey, but sorry, he is gone."
"Gone where?"
"Sit down, I will explain."
Then her mother used her hands to do something and she recited.
"Omnes memorias pater, filius et magia esse abiit." (Translation: All memories of father, son, and magic are gone.)
Suddenly, it felt like Adela's mind was spinning out of control, and something was getting erased from her mind. Then she felt like there was a hole in her heart.
"Mother, what happened?"
"Your brother died of cancer, and when your father was going to the hospital, he also passed away in a car crash," Elizabeth explained to her daughter.
"No, you are lying. They are still alive." Adela whined.
"I am sorry, but they are gone," said her mother, sighing.
For the first time, Adela saw her mother crying. She was crying with her, and she held Adela close to her, showing the love that she so badly needed.
Then Adela headed upstairs, and she cried until she could not anymore.
"Asmodeus Rivers, I will never forgive you for what you did to us. Why did you break our hearts?"
END OF FLASHBACK)
She just could not remember anything. Her father's return would make Adela and her mother happy again. It was her father who woke Adela from her nightmares, and it was he who would put a smile on her face. He showed her what a wonderful place the world was. That is what she remembered. She remembered there was nothing awful about him. The world was not right. Right now, all of her days are just the same gloomy day after another.
It wasn't a wonderful place, not anymore. It was a dreadful place. She got teased for her depression and anxiety. It was always a pretty sad thing to think about, but all she has now is sadness, no friends with who she could share her sorrow or at least a friend who understands what she is going through. They all left when she needed them the most, especially her best friend. His name was Dashiel, and she knew him for years, but for some strange reason, he is gone from her life as well. He left the day everyone else did. So that does mean that no one wants even be part of her life, she realises.
She looks out the window, and the rain is still going on, but it is thundering too now. She stares at dark clouds, and when she looks at herself in the long broken mirror, she realises that she is incredibly thin. When she gets hungry, then she eats a lot, but she doesn't like to eat. She wants to, and she really wants to, and sometimes she loves to eat. Furthermore, the way she dresses is light clothes now too, always wears such dull clothes. Today she wore a light grey hoodie and blue wash jeans, but she had way brighter clothes and those clothes were like the clothes she used to wear they were too small for her now. There are ones that sometimes she wants to wear, but she would rather not stand out. She's used to blending in and not caring about what people thought about the way she dresses. When she saw herself in the mirror, she noticed that she was still wearing the necklace that her father gave her on her tenth birthday. It was gorgeous and she wore it every day. It was a dolphin with the name 'Bella' on it. That was the nickname that her father gave her. He would call her that. Now, it is starting to make her feel like her heart is being cut open with a knife. She puts her fingers on the chain, and then she tugs it off her neck, leaving a scar, but that scar is not as painful as the ones deep inside.
Thinking about all of this, she fell asleep.
......................................................
Jordan has been looking for someone for a while. It is now the time for their powers to awaken. He gets in his car after eating his most recent meal, and his meal is quite bloody.
"Okay, that was delicious, but I am not full yet. I might have to eat again," said Jordan while wiping the blood off his face.
He starts to continue his journey to find the person.
Sometime later, he gets a call.
"You have to find her and bring her here RIGHT NOW!!!" shouts someone on the phone.
"I am trying to find her, and she is not easy to find. I have looked everywhere," replies Jordan.
"Well, then you know what will happen to you." firmly says the person.
Jordan is driving around everywhere looking for the house that he lived in before but can not find it, but suddenly he sees a girl running in the rain and has blonde hair with a book in her hand. She goes into an invisible house to supernatural creatures. He tries to park in front of it after the girl goes inside.
She stops before going in, then goes in. He knows what he has to do, so he does a spell.
"Fac invisibilia, visibile." he chants. (Translation: Make the invisible, visible.)
He can see the house now.
He goes to the door to ring the doorbell. No one answers it. Then he starts banging on the door to see if anyone answers. He starts to leave when no one answers. Then he turns around and starts to bang on the door once more, even louder.
Adela wakes with a start. As everything came into focus, she heard someone continuously banging on her door. Why did the person knocking on the door not ring the doorbell like a normal person, she thought. She then remembered her doorbell does not work, and she probably should get that fixed because her mother won't. She looks outside to see a black car parked on the side of the road. She has never seen this type of car it looks like it could be hundreds of years old but still polished and new. It is definitely not her mother's. She rubbed her eyes before she got up, and she so badly wanted to rest today. She drowsily started to walk downstairs to the front door. Adela turns the knob and on the doorstep, there is a young man about her age. He has golden blonde hair and ocean blue like her eyes, even the light sand skin tone is similar to hers.
Jordan looks to see a girl who looks almost identical to him, and he knows that she is the girl he has been searching for. He had been looking for her for months.
The man didn't speak for a short while until he said, "Hello, may I come in?" She looked at the man from head to toe and saw nothing in his hands that was dangerous. "Okay," Adela answered, not knowing what else to do. The man looked friendly enough, and the rain turned into a thunderstorm outside. She could not possibly let this poor guy be out there all alone.
When she saw him, he was completely dry, and he didn't even have an umbrella. That was strange, Adela thought, but it was no big deal. At least he is not in the rain anymore.
"If you're wondering why I'm dry, I don't know if you saw my umbrella. It's over there," he pointed to an umbrella that was standing beside the door. She did not even use an umbrella when she went outside, so where did that come from? He then continued walking to the sofa and making himself at home and sitting on the sofa his legs on the coffee table with very much disrespect and no regard to showing manners "also could I have some tea" the man requested he did it causally and with no emotion at all.
It's really weird. She did not see anything in his hand or the umbrella. The more and more she talked to this man, the more something about him didn't seem right, and he looked oddly familiar.
"Yeah, sure, I'll be right back. I was going to drink some anyway." Adela hurried into the kitchen. No way is she giving him anything but not when he seemed so suspicious. But she looks at him again through the kitchen, and she realises that he has not done any wrong. He just wants tea, and then he will be on his merry way when the weather gets better. She quickly made Earl Grey tea since this was the only kind of tea she knew how to make, but making it so many times for her mother on her sad days has made her an expert at making it. She then thought of getting biscuits as well because it was the friendly thing to do.
She put the coaster down and gave the tea to the man, she doesn't even know why she invited him into her house, let alone give him her special tea. She never trusts anyone, not anymore, but he seemed to like this person to be someone she could trust. Just by looking at him.
He reached for the cup and began to drink it, and then he said, "Thank you, this is magnificent."
The man stops sipping his tea when he sees Adela gets caught staring at him
"What are you looking at?" he said.
"Sorry, it's nothing you look so familiar." she moves her gaze to something else only for a moment, though. "I'm trying to figure out why that is." Adela pondered.
He put his mug down on the coffee table and then said, "I must have one of those faces, or perhaps we are closely acquainted," He looked into her eyes and said, "Adela." with great intimacy.
"Wait, how do you know my name?" asked Adela, afraid, and she dropped her coffee mug, causing it to shatter into pieces just like her heart did years ago.
"Let's just say that we have met before, and you know me from a long time ago," replied Jordan.
"What are you talking about? I haven't seen you ever. I don't even know who you are! If you are going to be weird with me, you can get out, please, and thank you." retorted Adela.
"Well, I have been looking for you, and can I tell you that you were not easy to find, but here you are, and you have to come with me," explained Jordan.
"No, get away from me!" shouted Adela as he came closer to her, and she ran to the kitchen. Adela starts to feel afraid and feels like this might be the end for her even though she is not afraid of death she does not want to die like this, not from her own mistake of letting a stranger in her house. She ran past him upstairs.
"Hey, I will not hurt you. Come on, we are going to be late." calls out Jordan.
Adela finds a place to hide since she is scared out of her mind. She goes into her room. When she reaches her room, she goes out of the window. She climbs up onto the roof. Not only has she just done this today, but she has done this many times when she wants to be alone. The man finds her and is coming for her on the roof, and he corners her. Adela forgot that it was raining, and as she was going back, she slipped, and she went tumbling backward off the roof. Although she did not fall, she flew. It felt like she was in a dream. She felt like she could fly forever. That moment ended too soon. She began to feel like she was falling again. When she did fall, she did not fall. She gracefully landed. The man made a motion with his hands while saying something in a language she could not understand, and she was now she was feeling like she is going mad, but then felt like she was going to faint.
She steps slowly toward the door and grabs a rock before going in to throw it at him, but she is too late. The fainting sensation was becoming too strong. She was trying to figure out what it was, but she just could not.
Adela came into the house, and the boy was gone, but then something was on her face, and the rock in her hands fell, and then she fell too.
Then everything went black.
