Chapter Five
"Pain comes in all forms. The small twinge, a bit of soreness, the random pain, the normal pains that we live with everyday. Then there's the kind of pain you can't ignore. A level of pain so great that it blocks out everything else; makes the rest of your world fade away until all we can think about is how much we hurt. How we manage our pain is up to us. Pain. We anaesthetize, ride it out, embrace it, ignore it... and for some of us, the best way to manage pain is to push through it. Pain, you just have to ride it out, hope it goes away on its own, hope the wound that caused it healed. There are no solutions, no easy answers. You just breathe deep and wait for it to subside. Most of the time pain can be managed, but sometimes the pain gets you when you least expect it, hits way below the belt and doesn't let up. Pain, you just have to fight through, because the truth is you can't outrun it, and life always makes more".
"i'm either what you're all about or i'm nothing"
Lucy turned on the light in George's room and yelled, "Seriously?!" George woke up, startled. She entered the room. "Make room", she said. She got onto his bed and lay down. "I was sleeping", he complained. "Shut up", she snapped. Meredith burst into George's room and yelled, "Seriously?!" She climbed into the other side of the bed, sandwiching George between the two. "This is a very small bed", George commented. "Derek is a brain surgeon", Meredith said, sitting up. "No chemistry, no sparks, nothing!" Lucy exclaimed.
"He's a brain surgeon! How can he be so brainless?"
"Hello? Seriously?"
"Seriously!!"
George tapped both their shoulders and shushed them. The storm made the power go out.
Bailey stood in the doorway as the interns got ready. Lucy threw her clothes into her locker, frustrated. "Who pissed in your cheerios?" Alex asked her. "Shut up", she snapped. He held up hands of surrender and she rolled her eyes.
The interns walked into a hospital room and Cristina presented Henry Lamott to everyone. Henry fiddled with the remote before turning the tv on. "Henry is allergic to all pain medication", Cristina continued. Girls laughed naughtily in the background. "Is that?" Cristina asked. "Porn", Henry's wife Maria answered. Alex looked excited. "What are we watching?" Alex asked. Lucy stifled a laugh. "Karev, go stand in the hall", Bailey commanded. "I'm sure you're really nice people and what you do in the privacy of your own home- look, we can't have porn in here. This is a hospital". "It's for the pain, endorphins are released to help manage the pain, my doctor suggested it", Henry replied. George stared at the screen in awe and Lucy burst out laughing. "O'Malley, Shepherd, go join Dr Karev in the hall", she said. George continued to stare at the screen so Lucy pushed him out, still laughing uncontrollably. Meredith, Cristina and Izzie joined them in the hall a few minutes later.
"O'Malley, Karev, Shepherd, pit. Stevens, cardiac patient. Yang, eyes on the Lamott's", Bailey said. They all left to do their assignments.
George, Alex and Lucy entered the pit. An ER resident handed George a clipboard. "Pete Willoughby, a GSW to the chest. He is in significant pain and is losing a lot of blood", George read. They approached the patient. "Damn, this hurts. They never tell you in movies how much it hurts to get shot", Pete said. "Mine", they all said. "Alex, you always get the surgery. Today, I'm getting the surgery", George said. "And apparently, I'm invisible", Lucy remarked. "Cut it out, he is a Seattle police officer, and a group of officers are watching you guys through the blinds", the ER resident said. George gave them a thumbs up. Lucy smacked his hand down and rolled her eyes. "Someone page Dr Burke", she said.
Alex, George and Lucy were pushing Pete on a gurney. "I got shot, it's only my first month on the job", Pete said. "I froze as the shooter pulled a gun on me, I don't think I'm going to live it down". "You will", George reassured.
Alex, George, Lucy and Pete stood in the elevator. Lucy leaned her head back and sighed. "What's wrong with her?" Alex asked George. "She's right here", Lucy said, closing her eyes. "She went on a date last night and the guy was a dud", George said. "George!" Lucy reprimanded. "Seriously?" Pete asked. "No sparks", Lucy replied. "No sparks, huh?" Alex asked her, looking her straight in the eye. Something fluttered in her stomach and her breath caught in her throat. It was like electricity crackled between them just by eye contact. All of a sudden, there was a loud noise and a jolt and Lucy and Alex snapped out of their daze. They became immersed in darkness. They looked around as the emergency lights came on. Lucy began to breath heavily and panic. Alex noticed. "Are you okay?" he asked. "Yeah, thanks", she replied.
"Dude, we're not moving"
"You don't miss a thing"
Alex tried to pry the elevator doors open as George and Lucy read off the directions on the elevator panel. "You should not become alarmed", George read. "Press the alarm button to call for assistance", Lucy finished.
"If they don't want us to be alarmed, why do they call the button alarm?" He pushed the button several times. "That's not how buttons work", Lucy said, pressing her head against the wall. Alex struggled with the door. "The button hasn't worked, why would it work now? We lost power and we're stuck", Alex said. "Positivity, we love to see it!" Lucy said, sarcastically. Pete moans. "His blood pressure is falling", George said. "We need to get Pete to an OR immediately", he whispered. "Please, don't whisper", Pete pleaded. Alex tried to use the phone in the elevator. "This is bad", Pete commented. "Don't say that, why would you say that?" Lucy yelled, panicking. Alex and George exchanged worried looks.
Burke, Bailey and some maintenance men were outside the elevators. They were to pull open the outside doors but the elevator itself was stuck between floors. Richard and Addison arrive. "How bad is it?" Richard asked. "Three interns and a GSW to the chest", Burke said. "Is Lucy in there?" Addison asked, concerned. Burke nodded, confused. "She is deathly claustrophobic". The maintenance men were only able to open the inner doors a few inches. Bailey poked her head through the gap. "What did you three do?" she asked. "Nothing!" they all replied. Addison poked her head through. "Lucy, are you okay?" she asked. "No, I gotta get out of here. I'm freaking out, Addie!" she said, out of breath.
"That's not really something I can do, Luce. Can I get you a coffee?"
"Addie!"
Burke then poked his head through. "How's the patient?" he asked. "Pete is not looking so good. He seems to have laboured breathing and perspiration all over his face", George said. "Me too", Lucy commented. They all stared at her. "Sorry about that", she whispered, before sitting on the floor.
Pete began to panic and Alex and George tried to calm him down while Lucy held her knees to her chest and rocked back and forth. "I want to go home", Pete said. "What's his status", Burke asked through the gap. "It's difficult to get a blood pressure reading", George said. "We also have minimal supplies". Pete began to wheeze. "He's gonna die", George said. "Intubate him while I get an instrument tray", Burke said. "I want you to open his chest in the elevator". "Oh, no, no, no", Lucy said. "Get me out, get me out, get me out". Alex kneeled in front of her. "Lucy, look at me", he said, moving her face to look at him. "You have got to calm down. If you don't, Pete is not gonna survive, okay. Come on". He grabbed her hands and pulled her off the ground. "I'm scared", she whispered. "Me too", he whispered back. She smiled at him and he smiled back.
George pumped the purple air bag. Burke returned and handed them various things to open Pete's chest. "I know it isn't very sterile but it's the best we can do for now", Burke said. They began to prepare for surgery. Alex hesitated to take the scalpel from Burke so he took over pumping the air bag while George exposed the GSW and started to clean the blood. Alex had a nervous look on his face. Lucy tapped his shoulder. "Hey, you okay?" she whispered. "Fine", he replied through gritted teeth.
"Sorry I asked"
George pumped the air bag. "We're really gonna do this", he muttered nervously. They all looked at Burke. Burke reached his arm in and tried to hand Alex a scissors and a scalpel. Alex was reluctant and froze, just looking at everyone. "Come on", George encouraged. "Alex!" Lucy shouted. Alex looked down. George handed him the purple air bag. "Ventilate", he said. Alex started pumping the bag and George took the scalpel from Burke. Lucy looked at Alex with a concerned expression she didn't think he was seeing but really, he was trying his best to ignore it. Burke began to give George instructions. He made an incision. "We're not in Kansas anymore", he muttered under his breath.
George continued the operation. "O'Malley, how are you doing?" Burke asked. "Dr Burke, the firemen can get the elevator doors open", Bailey said.
"No, there is an open chest and a nervous intern operating"
"I did not cut the heart or the lungs", George said. Burke gave him further instruction and George told him everything he would need. Burke looked pleased at George's assertiveness.
George removed a clot and updated Burke on his progress. Burke gave further instruction. George looked very excited as he touched the aorta. George applied a clamp on the heart. "I think I can localise the bleeding", George said. "Plug the hole in his heart", Burke said. Then the heart was filling more.
"What should I do now?"
"That's it"
"Thank god, get me out of here right now, please, please, please", Lucy begged.
"Way to go, George", Izzie congratulated. As Izzie congratulated George, Lucy saw Alex's face fall. She put her hand on his shoulder but he shrugged it off. "Seriously?" she said. "Leave me alone", Alex replied.
"Fine, wallow in self pity, see if I care"
George, Lucy and Alex finally got out of the elevator. Lucy collapsed into Addison's arms who cradled her as she sobbed. Alex stared for a minute or two with a guilty look on his face before looking away.
"You operated on a heart in an elevator? George, that's insane!" Holly exclaimed over the phone.
"I feel like I'm on cloud nine, Holly. I can't believe it! Now would be the perfect time to kiss you"
"Just a few more weeks and we can kiss whenever you want"
"That's a promise! I'm holding you to that!"
"I'd expect nothing less"
He chuckled.
"George?"
"Yeah?"
